Only sixteen with so much to live for, everyone's deep sorrow could never be expressed in all our words or actions. Now we still try to grope for the words to express how we feel, our grief and loneliness. We all loved her. She had more kindness that we could ever hope for in one person. Her own happiness would bring a smile to the saddest face, and the warmth of her friendship was always sincere. S Does it have to be gone? No, Helen will never leave us. Her love, gentle- ness and beauty must always stay with us. We must take the goodness Helen gave to us and share it with others. She's gone, but we'll always have the memory of her warm smile in our hearts. V SHS dedicates this yearbook to Helen. We'll always love her. 2 'aff'-.'4'-.2 ., , ,. , I' W-ma an YZJWH- N-.J 5- 3' :r'gil'..v-. -4 ,.4.'J ga3 f 'avi 9 fig!! ' 'cf I - a s. Mx. Nee Nay Na No Noo! No, this isn't a foreign language. This is one of the many voice exercises which helped Ronnie Belanger pass the audition for the District Chorus. He competed against 900 other high school students from Central Massachusetts. Ronnie was also recommended for the All-State chorus, which is unusual considering he sang tenor but had a baritone voice! Ronnie was with the Troubadours for three years and was President of the group his Senior year. With eight brothers, Jill Power finds it easy. Think of the daily race to the bathroom, dividing a pizza, or just keeping track of the toothbrushes. But also, think of the presents under the Christmas tree, the cars in the driveway, or never having left- overs. The advantages surely outweigh the disadvan tages. Being the only girl in such a large family can't be all bad. Think of all the friends your older brothers bring home. Or, the security of having a family of bodyguards. Jill is really fortunate. This seemed accurate thinking considering the squad would be comprised of a handful of Seniors and heavily loaded with inexperienced Iuniors and Sophomores. But Don Marino, entering his 14th season as SHS Head Coach, had different ideas. His own enthusiasm and desire were very early instilled in the youthful Pioneers as they learned quickly the ecstacy of winning. Des- pite the score, Coach Marino voiced optimism with the team's showing. He was especially pleased with the offensive performance led bv quarterback Dario Ciovacco and the scoring of tight end Stu Curboy and running back Guy Mathieu. The Pioneers lost their second game the following week to the always powerful Gardner High Wildcats 8-o V, C1ardner's only score came on an 85 yard punt return as they had trouble all day with the stingv SHS defense, an indication of things to come. End john Ohop, tackle fn!!! l Neal Tiberii and middle linebacker Glenn Corriveau led the defenders while Stu Curbov scored our only touch- 5 down catching an 18 yard pass from Dario Ciovaccof i . In succession we defeated Auburn 14-O, squeezed by Hudson 3-O on jeff Earl's twentv-five yard field goal, nipped stubborn Athol 12-7, and turned back the Warriors of Tantasqua 12-O. Defensive standouts during this stretch were ends lohn Ohop, john Grav and Scott Varin, tackles Chuck Culliton and Neal Tiberii, guards Pete Bur- zvcki and Pete Dargie, middle linebacker Glenn Corriveau and other backs leff Earls, John jalbert, Cary Langlois and Kennv LeBlanc. ln the Tantasqua game, Glenn Corriveau received the first annual Ted Farland Award as the game's most valuable player. Against St. Iohn's, our offense began to move but the loss of quarterback Dario Ciovacco just before halftime took its toll. Behind only 15-6 at the half, we finally fell 29-6. Scott Varin, conver- ted from defensive to offensive end caught four passes, one good for the only Pioneer score. The next team we played was Wachusett Regional with a deceiving record at that time of O-7. We added to their woes by the score of 8-6 in a hard fought con- test. The entire defensive unit stood out in this one led again by Glenn Corriveau and Kenny LeBlanc. Offensively quarter- back Dario Ciovacco threw a touchdown p to Scott Varin and a two-pointer to Mike Aucoin, both being outstanding catches. TS -k is .-n .XQ .mil . N if X X P 'K X- 3115-' ' , - 5-. JQWN The Thanksgiving Game was acknowledged by most observers to be the finest and most exciting game in the 55 year history ofthe classic. The teams appeared evenly matched going into the fracas. Our record was 5 and 3, Bartlett's 5 Wins, 2 Losses and 1 Tie. Our best offensive showing of the year produced a thrilling Z2-21victory. Darie Ciovacco engineered two first.half touch- down drives passing for T.D.'s to Stu Curboy and Marv Carron. A two-point conversion pass by Dario to Stiu gave us a 14-13 halftime lead. Both de- fensive units took over in the third period, but early in the fourth period Bartlett took a Z1-14 lead and things looked bleak for the Pioneers. The game-winning play came with but 1:09 left in the game as quarterback Dario Ciovacco threw a thirty- one yard scoring pass to glue-fingered end Scott Varin who made a great catch.Dario then scampered around right end for the two-point conversion and a choice Z2-21 victory! The Pioneers victory over Bartlett in the finale gave them the Border Conference Championship. For tht- second consecutive year quarterback Dario Ciovacco was named to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette Worcester County Super All-Star Team as well as the Border Conference All-Stars. Middle linebacker Glenn Corriveau made the Telegram and Gazette Class B All-Star Team and the Border Conference All-Stars. Other Border Conference All Stars were running back Guy Mathieu, offensive guard Pete Dargie, defensive end john Ohop, defensive tackle Chuck Culliton, and defensive backs Ken LeBlanc and jeff Earls. Coach Marino repeated as Border Conference Coach of the Year. Another plus for the Pioneer team was a o Wins-2 Losses and 1 Tie record turned in by our j.V. team under coaches Welch and Girpux. 1 A f . A it xx. -A 5 s ,I my Kneeling: S. Brown, K. Zikos, K. Our 1973 Cross Country team compiled the best record ever in SHS history with a fantas- tic 13 Wins and 2 Losses. Under Coach Dick . Leduc, Co-Captains Bill Gajewslci, jack Power and their Pioneer teammates were nearly un- beatable sweeping all Border Conference opponents to win that Championship. Mid-way through the season our team finished third in the Wachusetts Invitational in Class C, while in the annual K. of C. Road Race Bill Gajewski finished 8th and Jack Power 15th out of nearly 500 runners. During the season, many individual course records fell to Bill Gaiewski who copped an unbelievable 13 first place finishes in the 15 seasonal meets. In most of those wins Co- Captain jack Power finished right behind him. Course records Bill held at the end of the season were at SHS f14:41D, Shephard Hill, Bay Path and Bartlett. Q One final plus for the Pioneer harriers was the fine 4 and 1 record of the young junior Varsity squad. Kneeling: G. Pets.-re-on, D, DiC.regorio, M. Beaupre, L. Vairo, B. Mer- P. LaCoste, M. Appropriately, Captain Lance Jewell was the squad's top scorer for the season winning his three major events in several of our competi- tions. One ofthe highlights of his season was his victory over Holy Name's Marvin Safford in the high jump, while a team highlight was its conquest of Tantasqua 73-67. 4 Neil Peterson's specialty was the 440 and he proved it by winning twelve consecutive races at that distance. Dan Charette was a consistent pole vault winner, Pete Dargie and Stu Curboy scored well in the shot and Bill Gaiewski was nearly un- beatable in the longer distances. In the District III lClass Cl event six of our Pioneers finished as follows: Bill Caiewski won the 2 Mile Runp Lance Jewell finished third in the 100 Yard' Dash: lack Power took fourth in the 1 Mile Runp Neil Peterson captured fourth in the 440 Yard Dash: john Cray scored fifth in the Iaveling and Dan Charette won fifth in the High lump. r U Z .1-'E . o A,,.,.- A ,,,,.. . 3.4-9- il! g.zQJ-1--M' ua' ,I sw ' W ,4,-:r 5- ' 5 in www- . -V JA.. Coach Dick Leduc's Pioneerettes combined strong pitching, an awesome offense and a stingy de- fense to roll over one opponent after another. ln regular season play our girls scored an unbelievable 259 runs for a 20 run per game average while holding the opposi- tion to just 6 runs per game. Sue Peters was the pitching staff's mainstay assisted periodically by Sue Ford. Most of the team members were batting stars but jackie St. Laurent, Cheryl Caouette, Sue Peters, Ceece Nault and Lisa Corbitt stood out. Solid performers on defense were jan Cham- peau, Debbie Tremblay, Sandy Ford and most of the above-mentioned players. The one disappointment of an otherwise perfect season was the 5 - 4 last inning loss to Athol in our own Tourney. The Sophomore-laden squad, though losing more than they won, undoubtedly gained valuable experience during the year, and learned lessons they won't forget in '74. Coach Ellie Tremblay's Pioneerettes, led by Senior Tri-Captains Ceece Nault, Marilyn Smith and Jackie St. Laurent, racked up 16 wins on their way to SHS's most impressive girls basketball season ever. Their fine 16-1 record was compiled with probably the best balanced team in SHS history. The team's year end stats proved they played the game at both ends of the court. , ' As a team they averaged 53 points per game while holding their oppo- nents to just 34. Individually super-Soph Sue Peters and Jackie St. Laurent led the scoring with 20 and 17 points per game respectively. Sophomore Janice St. Laurent also scored well averaging 8 points per game. The Pi- oneerettes were a strong rebounding team also as Sue Peters and Janice St. Laurent led the team with 14 and 11 rebounds per game averages. Jackie St. Laurent averaged 9 caroms and Junior Lisa Corbitt wasn't far behind with B. . A highlight of the early season was a 64-52 conquest of Holy Name, stopping that team's consecutive win streak at 35, Victories over the Sutton Suzies, Oxford, and cross-town rival Marianhill continued our momen- tum through mid-season. Our 49-34 win over Auburn near the end of the season gave us the Border Conference Crown. - Others contributing to the team's success were Junior Debbie Ouellette, Sophomores Cheryl Caouette and Cheryl Cesolini, and surprising newcom- er Freshman Sheri Brousseau. The team's terrific record easily qualified them to play in the District 3 Girls Basketball Tournament. 1.1.3, ,..,, I ,, ,, , '-V- 7 -.K 5 sv - 4 I Southbridge Marianhill 36 Southbridge Sutton 31 Southbridge Holy Name 52 Southbridge Oxford 44 Southbridge Douglas 59 lOTl Southbridge Bay Path Z1 Southbridge Bartlett 30 I Southbridge Auburn 23 Southbridge THHYGSQUB 45 I Southbridge Bay Path 41 g Southbridge Si- Marys 38 Southbridge Bartlett Z6 Southbridge Tantasqua 33 Southbridge Auburn 34 Southbridge Marianhill 35 Southbridge Sf- Mary'S 32 V Southbridge Quaboag 33 - Season: 16 Wins 1 Loss Z . 105 f fes, ,Q s aw I, 'Y' 7 2 - N! Girls Junior Varsity . ff Q,- i 1 The 1973-74 SHS sports scene saw the addition of hockey to its intra-scholastic athletic schedule. Icing the puck , slashing , hat trick , high-sticking , crease , and game misconduct were some of the new and exciting expressions echoing through our halls and classrooms. The first year vice squad under Head Coach Pete Hapgood and Assistant Coach Joe Capillo competed in the South County Hockey League which played all of its games at the Webster Square Rink in Worcester. Top offensive threats were Tucci and Senior Rich Lees who each scored hat tricks Q3 goals in 1 gamel during the season. Greg's came against Blackstone Valley in the team's first win of the season, while Rich scored his against Millbury High School. One of the highlights of the year was an B-4 win over a faculty all-star team at mid-season. lt was generally agreed that the Pioners had the best goalie in the league in Bruce joy. Other outstanding defenders were Rick Earls, Bill Petro, Bob Pickarski and Steve Metras. Other Seniors on the squad were Bill Diliederico, Barry Iozzo, Mike Checka and Mike Lataille. Kennedy was greeted with a standing ovation by about 750 students, teachers, school officials and members of the school committee on hand for the assembly. Mr. Desroches introduced Student Council Presdent Scott Butler who in turn introduced Senator Kennedy to the SHS community as one of America's most distinguishec public speakers. The Senator lived up to that billing as he discarded his prepared address, and spoke extemporaneously for about 30 minutes. The Kennedy style of delivery, always smooth - the quick humor, sometimes self-deprecating - was thoroughtly enjoyed by all. Senator Kennedy was not alone at winning the hearts of the SHS student body, as he introduced his nephew, Joseph P. Kennedy III, son of the late Senator Robert Kennedy. When those assembled roared their approval, the Senator waved his hands to stop the applause and said, Hey, you've given him a bigger hand than you gave me. Much laughter greeted the Kennedy wit. The Senator's address touched on subjects from capital punishment, to Watergate, the energy crisis and whether President Nixon should re- main in office. In response to a student question of whether he would be a Presidential candidate in '76, he replied he had no politi- cal plans other than seeking re-election to the United States Senate. He said it was the young who sensitized American political leaders to the mistakes made in South Vietnam, and who led the nation to begin cleaning its environment. Following his speech, he asked questions of the student audience, which they answered with a show of hands. His poll related to critical national issues such as the energy crisis and President Nixon's impeachment. Though most favored impeachment or resigna tion, the Senator indicated he preferred waiting for the report of the House judiciary Committee and its recommendations. After completely captivating the SHS student body, Senator Kennedy wound up his stay her with a private conference with the Milestone Yearbook Staff. The'word charisma has often been used to describe various members of the Kennedy family. After the Senator's brief stay with us, it was quite obvious why.
