After study under Farnsworth, Brack- man, and Deering, Miss Birtz became art instructor for the entire school system. Later she undertook supervision of the system's art instruction with more time to focus on the varied needs of SHS's aspiring artists. Miss Birtz describes her profession as not just teaching art . .. but finding the individual's unique ability, and has based her guidance on encouragement of self-development. Now Miss Birtz leaves SHS to pur- sue her two main interests: painting and ecology. She plans to fill her retirement lei- sure in paintings and lectures for the conservation of Southbridge. To Miss Birtz we leave a canvass-ful of thanks and wishes for the brightest of futures in retirement's multi-colored palette. 64 rom Being Friends Throughout The P rosa Mrs. Rose Proulx Nous esperons que vous allez avoir beaucoup de bonne chance dans les annees prochaines. Under the outstanding advisorship of Mr. Larson, council representatives took an active part in serving as student advisory members to the School Committee, HEW group, Teacher Evaluation Committee, and the Educa- tional Goals Committee. The Student Council always seemed to keep busy whether it was helping plan an assembly program or selling We Don't Mess Around buttons. ' 14 23 6 Football Southbridgo, 6 E Barrlepf .20 P' Head Coach Don Marino's 13th season at Southbridge High began, as most do, with a great deal of well-founded optimism as several key players he would be relying on during the season had valuable experience from the previous year. The year 1971 had been a rebuilding year and the Pioneers had won six games against but three losses. They had also shared the Border Conference Championship. All things considered, it was no wonder the Marino-men enthusiastically approached the 1972 season. The season began with the traditional lamboree played in Northbridge. The Pioneers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they easily defeated host Northbridge High by the score of 28-6. Both the offensive and defensive units stood out in this contest and Southbridge players and fans alike looked forward to the-home opener against Clinton the following week. 4 The season officially opened one week later as our gridders hosted an always strong Clinton Gaels team. Southbridge's famed defensive unit, dubbed the Big D , proved that defense would again play a key role in our season's success. The defensive unit, led by middle linebacker and co-captain Mike Garcia, co-captain lohn Roy, Henry Dubreuil, Mike Benjamin, Marty Power, Marcel Besse and Phil Lanctot held the Gaels at bay while the offense triggered by quarterback Dario Ciovacco scored 22 points. Our chief opponents for the distinction seemed to be the eventual winner, Shrewsbury High School. Another loss would be disastrous, and unfortunately that occured in our next game. Sadly depleted by injuries suffered the previous week, the Pioneers fell to the Atho! High Red Raiders in a hard fought contest Our last four games of the season proved to be carbon- copies of one another. In each of the last four games, the Pioneers staged second-half comebacks that were un believable! Trailing Tantasqua 6-2, Southbridge scored four last period T.D.'s to win 30-6. Running back Dave Caouette, in a brilliant display, scored three of the touchdowns, Guy Mathieu the other. The following week, defensive linebacker Henry Dubreuil took to the offense and scored a late touchdown to help defeat I St. john's 15-14. Against Wachusett Regional, the Pioneersscored 21 of its game-winning 23 points in the last period to defeat the Mountaineers 23-6. Finally, on Thanksgiving Day, Bob Maramo caught the winning touchdown pass against the Indians with but 20 seconds remaining on the clock. Final Score: Southbridge 6- Bartlett 0. Southbridge High School's first victory ever in its short history of varsity soccer compe- tition came in but the third game of the '72 season. The , following game, the Pioneers tied the always powerful Bartlett . High Indians, 1-1. This was but the second full year of 1 soccer for most of the players under Head Coach Gosk, and at ' times mastering the European sport proved frustrating. But . it was obvious the boys were progressing. Their teamwork and passing improved and they played a much more aggressive Q hitting game. ' ' 1 ' with,Russ Cournoyer and Dave Albani, all luniors, and Sophomores jimmy Marino and Billy Petro improved that facet of the Pioneer's l ' game: Leading the team's hard-working defensive specialists was ,the only Senior starter Co-Captain Brian Dupuis, plus luniors Scott Varin, Bruce Galli, David Lacasse, David Ashe, - ' and leff Chasse.
