Knowing another lan- guage is to the advantage of the individual as well as of the national interest. Learning a foreign language is learning to communicate. To communicate one must be able to listen, to speak, to read and to write the language he wishes to master. In teaching these fundamental skills we hope to instill under- standing and compassion for other cultures and civilizations. In composition, we use a developmental approach, each course building on the preceding course. ln literature, we use the best features of var- ious methods, concentrating sometimes on a study of a liter- ary period, sometimes on a form of genre, sometimes on the- matic units. Always central to our philosophy, however, is the idea that probing, analytical reading is a sine qua non in devel- oping literary taste and in discovering pleasure in good books.
