Miss The Commercial Department has two main objectives, to pre- pare students for immediate employment following graduation, and to give a background for continuance of training in business schools and colleges. Commercial courses are open to all students. Academic students enroll in commercial courses to learn to type for college use, and to have a skill with which to earn money for college expenses. Our first ob- jective is to develop a sincere interest in science, so that those who have native ability in the subject matter might choose this as a career. Secondly, we feel that developing a practical ap- plication of science to everyday living is of the utmost impor- tance. lt senfes not only as a motivation to the student, but helps him to better understand the newer innovations of our modern world. lVlr. Club Adv., Class Play. The English Department at Southbridge High School prepares students to think clearly, tn write organized, vigorous prose, to read with insight and critical judgment. In composition, we use a developmental approach, each course building on the preceding course. ln literature, we use the best features of var- ious methods, concentrating sometimes on a study of a liter- ary period, sometimes on a form of genre, sometimes on the- matic units. Always central to our philosophy, however, is the idea that probing, analytical reading is a sine qua non in devel- oping literary taste and in discovering pleasure in good books.
