Their young lives ended during our high school yearsg yet we will always remember them. Joseph was respected by all of us as a student and an individual of integrity. We remember the friendly word he had for everyone and his willingness to help others. His presence has been missed by all. Susan was admired by all who knew her as a person of rare courage. She always had a smile and a kind word for her classmates. She accepted her ap- proaching death with a calmness that few of us can ever hope to experience. Spiritually, she contributed much to our class. The memory of both of our former students will always be with us as we continue onward in life. 4 Dedication SBP' 'G' Mr. James Forkey Our lives have been greatly enriched during the four years which we have spent at Southbridge High School. This enrichment was made possible by the faculty members' time and ability which they so willingly shared with us. We are thankful to all of our teachers for their contributions to us, and especially grateful to our advisors, Mr. James Forkey and Mr. William Paul. To them we, the grateful Class of 1967, dedicate this year- book, a symbol of our enrichment by them. Mr. William Paul N lQ ' , ! w w P 8 X A X Yi Xx x 'I S Superintendent of Schools Mr. Charles Beattie We, the class of 1967, would like to take this op- portunity to extend a cordial welcome to our new Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Charles Beattie. We hope that his stay in Southbridge will be a long and pleasant one. 8 Administration ik' 'A r,,,,. ,.,f4,g.im. we uf 41 wg-1 ai v ', n- 9. Mr. Edward Desroches Mr. C. Dedi- cated to the class of '66, Fantasia will be remembered as a truly suc- cessful and beautiful social gath- ering. Among the many hard workers who devoted their time and energy to prom preparations were Ken Szczy- pien, Paul Hapgood, Pete Cour- noyer, Marcia Domijan, Stuart Sharp, and Anna Calcagni. Arches entwined with flowers and vines. picket fences, swimming swans, wide- eyed daisies, and the Gazebo were combined to present a spectacular event, very difficult to top. We acknowledge all those who made this very rewarding assembly possible. Senior Play 2 f. ' - Our senior class presented Stalag 17 with an all-male cast on two successive nights in the school audito- rium. The enthusiastic reception to our first and only play by the public made the endeavor a huge success. Under the superb direction of Mr. James Forkey, our class advisor, the entire cast gave two splendid per- formances. Many long and hard hours went into the preparations for the play. It proved to be a rewarding and exciting experience for both the cast and the au- dience. 120 ,K F imwfikifw-Siem vw A ibn Url P-Vwiknf-'Wit mr mm hu ' .M , 1. 5 gf, W Q: 2 ww nw Ai 9llnn.uAx-nga: l GIIQY sf 2' in x. Pure destruction. The world is in holo- caust. The year is l977g no one is left. Yet, safely below the earth. the Class of 1967 and their fami- lies lie in a suspended state. It all happens one fine day during the tenth-day class reunion which is being held in the new under- ground Southbridge City Auditorium, brainchild of architect Frank Roccisano. The group is wit- nessing a demonstration of new techniques to put life in a suspended state, developed by Stephen Lancey and Charles Szumilas. Suddenly, Mike Ca- plette, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, re- ceives an urgent message over his radio-wristwatch and falls to the iloor in a faint. His assistant, Allan Guardiani, notifies the audience of the start of the Third World War. To avoid the destruction de- scribed over the Ambassador's wrist-radio, the en- tire class undergoes the Szumilas-Lancey treat- ment, administered by assistant biologist Joyce Po- lakowski and nurses Diana Vasil and Jan Des- marais. The entire class enters a sleep-like condi- tion, which stops all bodily activities and preserves the bodies for twenty-five years. Time passes to the year 2002. The class awakens to a uninhabited firld, full of strange new plants and consistently warn. climate. To face the task of rebuilding the world, lt. 'ers selected by elections are obtained. Supervising the elections are Robert Dupuis, Pete Battista, and Paul Bouvier. The class officers are unanimously elected to their old posts -Kenneth Szczypien as President, Pete Cournoyer as Vice-President. Among the appointments are Paul Hapgood, Secretary of the Treasury, and Marcia Langlois as Chief Accountantg Martin Gubb as Secretary of Economic Rebuilding, Paul Libuda as Chief Justice and Sue Bachand as Clerk of Courts, Stanley Burzycki as Field Marshall and Roland Dupuis as his assistant. Helen Bellos is ap- pointed personal secretary to President Szczypien. Ruth Yanka is appoiiied official historian of the settlement of New Southbridge. Religious needs of the community are cared for by Reverend Ronald Parent, whose golden tongue guides the congregation on Sundays. Linda Brown, after receiving a vision, founded the Convent of Sisters of Saint Nesbitt, assisted by Marlene Lan- gevin and Theresa Zach. A primary problem is rearranging the school sys- tem. Because of her kind nature, Linda Julian at- tracts all the children and places them in a special annex. The children, ranging from pre-school to fourth graders, are divided into their respective classes. Paulette Gregoire, discoverer of a new pre- -school-age teaching method, embarks upon the tedious task of awakening young minds. Carolyn Swiatek and Sue LaRivere, co-authors of Teaching the Young Genius, have selected a genius group for the speed learning program. Linda Lavigne's sunny smile makes her an excellent choice for first graders. Second and third graders are taught by Gloria Lataille and Frances Gagne respectively. Dorothy Szydlik, author of Growing Up-How We Can Help, uses her unique talent for fourth graders. The president, requesting a course in adult educa- tion, desires to continue cultural and educational advancement for the limited number of persons in New Southbridge. French is taught by Linda Lan- gevin and Donna Mandeville, co-authors of French of the A ges. Katya de Castro, the first ex- change student at Southbridge High School, teach- es Spanish to enterprising students. Norman Vandal and Nancy Salvatore combine their talents to form an adult English class worthy of the 1967 members. Nuclear Age Math is instructed by Al- bie Anderson, while Myrna Anderson gives in- struction in Advanced College Math. The sciences are attended to by William Klosek and Louis Trahan. All pupils are compelled and interesed adults en- couraged to enter the special lields. Marcia Domi- jan, the famed artist, gives all pupils instructions in the line art of drawing. Helen Cadarette gives pupils excellent dance training. Special classes in physical education are given by Donna Benoit, ka- rate expert. For those interested in mechanics, William O'Brien, discoverer of ,the nuclear- powered car, imparts his knowledge. Our history teachers, Thomas Lapriore and Paul Yanka, are corroborating on the complete history of the world. Daniel Bourdelais solves the problem of building the easy-to-build, sturdy home. An expert in met- als, he has produced cheaply and easily a collaps- ible, compact, yet portable full-size ranch home. Roland Blanchette and Armand Jalbert, under the supervision of Ronald Bussiere, begin production of these folding homes. Afred Denno is placed in charge of the distribution, with Linda Winchester as his secretary. Inside the home, cabinet expert Richard Lorange performs decorating miracles with the help of Paul Gaucher. Paul Bachand, Ken Rizner, and Steve Davis work diligently on replenishing our electrical supply. Jean Julian and Donald Mainville. after many hours deliberation, finish the construction of the intricate plumbing system. Without their help, wa- ter would be a serious problem. Ray Fournier and Robert Couture plan the new road system. Their ideas run from superspeed highways to underground tunnels. James Hill, di- rector of the building of this system, is assisted by Dave Tremblay and Robert Bertrand. The roads begin to curve their way into Southbridge life again. The Department of Labor and Economy has formed a union. David Ceccarelli and Anna Cal- cagni, noted for their ability to find things, are elected to explore and find a building for the business department. To their surprise, they find the American Optical Company has been perfectly preserved. Little do they know that Thomas Brousseau has mixed laser-maser beams and de- veloped a coating which will preserve it forever. Three days before that fateful night, Malcolm Utakis, Gene Cadarette, and Joe Gauthier covered the whole American Optical with this protective coating. Inside, all was safe and sound. Returning to the underground auditorium, David and Anna report their findings. The business department is being reconstructed. Steve Champeau is elected business co-ordinator. Anne Belanger, the fastest shorthand taker, and Janice Leduc, the fastest typist, are his secretaries. Nancy Leduc and Diana Syriac have the privilege of being secretaries to Priscilla Gimas, head of business administration. David Ford begins rearranging the prices of our food-stuffs with the help of Kenneth Ashton, gro- cery store owner. Under his supervision are Sue Lemoine and Sue Bousquet. Deborah Gray, eco- nomic analyst, is assisted by Monique and Linda Benoit. The clothing department, under Donna Beaulieu, shocks the settlement with daring new designs by Alice Brousseau. Tom Brodeur, alos in this depart- ment, is the supervisor to Martha Prince and Sue Anderson. Henry Benoit is business administrator for House- hold facilitiesz Jcan Vilandre is indeed honored to place her skills under this ofiice. Robert Tarquinio, business co-ordinator of IBM machines, has for his secretaries Carol Zajac and Ruth Arsenault. The famed computer program- mers, Donna Gravell, Cynthia Buchanan, Mike Gendreau, and Linda Webber give their skills to this department. John Stevens begins the reconstruction of vending machines, assisted by Ann McDonald. Theresa Gauthier as typist and Elizabeth Sweet, first secre- tary, work under his supervision. The old infirmary at the American Optical has been enlarged to accommodate the community's needs under Chief of Staff Thaddeus Lesniewski. Physician Gerry Mathieu is well known in the community for his hard work. Surgeon Charles Palmerino has for his assistants the able nurses, Linda DiMarco, Nancy Niejadlik, Roberta Pratt, and Elaine Burda. His operations would be impos- sible without the help of Paula Dubreuil, X-Ray technician. Home first-aid courses are taught by Doctor Wil- liam DiGregorio and his assistant Rosanne Trem- blay. Dentist David Richard is assisted by dental hygienist Charliss Brousseau. With the organization ofa new town and business, people in the varied fields of athletics are planning a new gymnasium, ultramodern teaching tech- niques, and organized games in a variety of sports. The new gymnasium, built and contracted by Randal Morse, athletic director, is located next to the underground auditorium. Bichop Nawrot, famed architect, is the construction contractor. John Anderson, because of his creative ideas of landscaping, is the ground's custodian. When the building is finally completed, the physi- cal education instructors will be at work in an ac- celerated physical fitness program. A typical day in the gym follows this schedule: Beside the pool, Deanne Walstrom, WAA swim- ming champion, is giving lessons in new lifesaving methods. Patricia Polanik, professional gymnast, is seen at the far end of the women's gymnasium, teaching forward rolls on the balance beam. In the men's gymnasium. Nelson Carpentier, head basketball coach, is drilling shooting and rebound- ing techniques. and boys' physical education teacher. William Cloutier. is demonstrating the proper form for a push-up. Clilford Szczypien. assistant football coach, leads the team in calisthenics. while head coach John Lango organizes the plays for upcoming games. At a nearby ski slope. Fireworks begin to sound proclaiming the class's joy at the ap- proaching reunion with their long absent class- mates. David Boucher, world famous conductor, strikes up the band as the space travelers descend the rocket. Also waiting nearby are Janice Libera, soloist, and the comic team of Michael Libuda, Wayne Lusignan, and Kenneth Menard. These classmates will provide the entertainment at the evening's festivities.
