V 1968 SEA SPRA Y Foreword As our high school years draw to a close the class of 1968 will go out into an adult world where we will meet new challenges and make new friends. Yet, as we venture into this new world, we do not wish to forget the work, the fun. the friendships we shared with our high school friends. We, the Sea Spray staff of 1968, present the I96S SEA SERA Y in the hope that it will serve to preserve these memories. Wilbert Jones will retire after twenty years of service to the Southampton school system and community. He will be sincerely missed by all who know him. Mr. Jones current position as Superintendent of Schools is but one of the many prominent offices he nas held in the community. He is a past President of the Ro- tary Club, East End Athletic Association, Suffolk County Athletic Association, East End Principals’ Association, and Suffolk County School Executives Associa- tion. He has also served on the State Athletic Association, the Board of Directors of the Southampton Golf Club, the Suffolk County Interdepartmental Social Wel- fare Advisory Committee, and has chairmaned the local Salvation Army Unit. Mr. Jones obtained his B.A. in mathematics, science, and education at St. Law- rence. He received his master’s degree in educational administration and supervi- sion at Syracuse University. In the years to come, we will remember him as a warm friend, a valuable advis- er, and a sincere and dedicated servant of the community. We the Class of 1968, wish him continuing success and happiness as we respectfully dedicate to him this, our 1968 Sea Spray. 4 When the school year opens in September next year, a well known member of the school system will be missing. Mr. Harold Philp is retiring after 22 years of service in the South- ampton Schools. Mr. Philp, who came to Southampton from St. Andrews. Scotland in 1930, is planning to return to Scot- land with his wife for a visit this summer. He has no definite plans after the trip, but is considering several job offers. We will miss his friendly grin and cheerful whistle throughout the year. A grateful thank you to him from the class of 1968. Harold Philp At the close of the school year, Miss Doris Weber, will also leave the Southampton School System. She has served it long and well as an English teacher in grades 9, 11, and 12. Miss Weber served as yearbook adviser for twelve years and advis- er to the receptionists for the past three years. Miss Weber re- ceived her B.S. from the State University at Albany and her M.A. from the Bread Loaf School of English of Middlebury College. She plans to travel after retiring. A grateful thank you to her from the class of 1968. Doris Weber Miss Edna Wood will also retire at the end of the school year. Miss Wood, a native of Southampton, has been the School District Clerk and Business Manager. She is a gradu- ate of Rider College. Miss Wood has no set plans for the im- mediate future. Best wishes to her from the class of 1968. 5 Edna Wood To the Students of S.H.S. Twenty years ago today, I signed my first contract as Superintendent of the Public Schools of South- ampton and will this coming week submit my resig- nation to become effective July 31, 1968, in order that I may begin my retirement at that time. These years have been happy ones for me because during them I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with real fine young people, a sample of which is gradu- ating this year. To each of you, the ones gone by and those here now who someday will be graduates of this school, I extend my best wishes for all possible success and say thank you for having had the privi- lege of serving as your Superintendent of Schools and knowing you. Sincerely, J. Wilbert Jones Superintendent of Schools Assistant Superintendent L A U R I E M P A T T E R S O N Dear Members of the Class of 1968 Many will consider you educated now that you have accumulated a vast storehouse of information. You have studied literature, mathema- tics. history, science, and a variety of other subjects that round out your knowledge of man and his environment. You are literate, but is literacy the major purpose to which your edu- cation has been directed? No, I believe it has been concerned with a more subtle and less obvious goal; one which can help you to develop a sound purpose in life within the framework of your personal code of honor. This is the foundation, the Gibralter on which all your opinions and actions will be anchored in a fast moving and changing world. The honorable man is incorruptible. His judgment is sought, and peo- ple put their trust in his hands. The honorable man can at all times trust himself above all others. He will look at both sides of an issue. He will alter his decisions when new facts are presented. He cannot be swayed by emotion, tears or money; neither will he avoid facing the issues of the day forthrightly and with clear conscience. You, the individual, have more responsibility and face more decision- making than civilized men have had to undergo in times gone by. You are that individual of today and also of tomorrow'. May you, the members of the Class of 1968. find the rock of honor and trust and go forth to better the material and spiritual lot of mankind. Best wishes and good luck to each of you. I realized that the next few months would present me with a new outlook and increased understanding of the world and its people. Upon arriving in my host-city, Recife, located on the northeastern coast of South America, I was greeted by the friendly faces of my new “family”—my Brazilian parents and six brothers and sisters. My oldest broth- er Artur, who was the only member of my family who spoke English, helped greatly in my adjustment to the new environment. In a matter of weeks however, I was conversing with family and friends in Portuguese, the native language of Brazil. During July, my Brasilian brothers and sisters were dismissed from school for the winter vacation. We of- ten went swimming in the nearby ocean or at one of the several social clubs. Unlike tne United States, the entire Brasilian social life revolves around numerous social clubs which organize athletic teams and arrange dinners and dances for their members. Winter vacation ended in August and I then had the opportunity to compare the Brasilian and American school systems. Most of the schools in Brazil are pri- vately controlled by the Roman Catholic Church since 95% of the population is Catholic. Thus, many people who cannot afford the tuition costs are unable to pro- vide their children with an education. Ironically, Bra- zil’s universities are free, government controlled insti- tutions whose only requirement for entrance is passing the difficult entrance examinations. I attended classes with my brother Artur from 7:30 A. M. until 12 P. M. He was studying chemistry and physics, English, Portuguese, trigonometry, world history, and physical education. Students are taught in a relaxed atmo- sphere where smoking and gum chewing were permit- ted. Strict discipline was not needed since the students were intent upon learning, realizing that what they ac- complished here would cfetermine whether they would continue their education at a university and guarantee for themselves a successful future. After school my brother and I ate lunch at home and then took a short nap. Artur did his homework in the afternoon and we would often go to a movie or party at night. While in Brazil, I had occasions to travel with other AFS’ers staying in cities nearby Recife. One such trip was a bus ride 200 miles northward to Natal where we took a part in an AFS weekend of sightseeing and cel- ebrating. Before returning to the Umted States all the summer exchange students regrouped in Rio de Janei- ro for three days. Here we visited a university where we discussed with several Brasilian students, the Unit- ed State’s involvement in Viet Nam and the civil rights issue. We also had a chance to swim at the fa- mous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. I feel that my experiences in Brazil have increased my understanding of other peoples and their ideas and left me with a more mature outlook on life in general. I wish that all students could have the same experience. Nardy and his Brazilian mother visit the beach. This is my Brazilian cousin. It is difficult for me to express here all the marvelous impressions I have of Southampton and especially of her people. Everything has been like a dream since the be- ginning of the whole experience, almost two years ago, when I applied to A.F.S. for my scholarship. As I said, the people are particularly nice here, the families, the kids, the teachers who have always helped me, the Glan- zes, who are the basic reason for my happiness here. They not only opened their house to me, but also their family life, their home, which is wonderful and has made my year unforgettable. This confidence, they have given to me is the reason I have never felt as if I were in a foreign house. So, with a great family and such great people all experiences arc greater than they could ever possibly be. Everything was good, since the first attempt in surfing —which made me drink a lot of water—until the cold winter which brought with it the “coolest” things I ever had: snowfights and ice skating—Oh!! I almost forgot sleigh riding, especially when I ended up in the brier patch full of thorns and I scratched my face and the worst, when Mr. Spooner asked me who did it, a blonde or a brunette!! How could somebody forget Sip ’n Soda after school, especially after one of Mr. Thompson’s typical tests, or the bottle drive. How could somebody forget it? Each detail and little incident contributed to make this the most exciting year of my life. The program in which I am participating involves a great ideal: Understanding and friendship between Americans and people from all over the world. Yes, understanding and friendship, because most of the wars have been due to misinterpretation and lack of com- munication between the different peoples of the world. This is just what I am trying to do here, understand and live with Southamptoners. 48 Alfonso talks things over with the Sea Spray photographer. Us Alphonso I left my country last August. Costa Rica is a very small country in Central America. It is about the size of West Virginia and has two million inhabitants. We enjoy a nice spring all year around. Up in the moun- tains the weather is fresher and the people farm. There are several active volcanoes and once in a while earth- quakes. These are enjoyed by the people because they are not dangerous. In the central plateau which is sur- rounded by these mountains, is the place where I live. San Jose is the capital of the country, with 300,000 in- habitants. It is an active and relatively new city. San Jose didn’t experience much advancement during its first 250 years, because the principal activity of the country was the coffee industry and this was developed in small farms. But, by the 1930’s an industrial revolution started and with it the city started to progress. Today the build- ings show their modern silhouette and the city is growing constantly. Culturally, Costa Rica has a higher rate of literacy than most other Latin American countries—about 92%— and the people are mostly of Spanish ancestry. The government of Costa Rica is one of the few democracies of Latin America. Costa Rica has one es- pecially nice thing: I will never be drafted, because Costa Rica is the only country in the world without an army. I am a member of a middle class family. My father works in the government, my mother has a doctorate in pharmacy and actually is a retired teacher and runs the house. I have three brothers and one sister, who along with my two other brothers is married. My sister is a teacher. My oldest brother has finished with the University and the other two are still in college. My future plans are to continue my education at the Uni- versity in the field of architecture. I know one thing will always help me, the year I spent in Southampton, the year of my life. 49 Costa Rica’s answer to the Mustang? ROW ONE: N. Bouker. T. Edwards. P. Canccllicri, R. Darden, E. A very special word of thanks to Mr. Richard Conklin and Mrs. Judith Booth, our advisors, who have directed us and aided us in countless ways. Their guidance and devotion have been an inspiration to us. To Dorothy Wright, Pete Baab, Pat Gadomski, Jim Neighbours, Paul Rogers, and Bill Culver, we owe our thanks, for without their effort the 1968 Sea Spray would not be in existence. We offer our thanks to Chester Smiley, our American Yearbook consultant, who helped us complete our task. To all the personnel of Carol Studios for the photography work, and to the fac- ulty for their cooperation in picture taking, we are grateful. We are indebted to Mr. Jones, Mr. Spooner, and the office maintenance staffs’ for the assistance they willingly rendered. To all who aided with advertisements and boosters, we are deeply indebted. 128
