Stainback blocks for Stainback. The Indians began their 1960 season by losing a squeaker to the Emporia Eagles 8-7. Faced with a tremendous rebuilding job, the Indians played with four, five, and sometimes six sophomores in the lineup. The next week at Gloucester the Indians were again nosed out 27-21, even though SHS rolled up 442 yards rushing to GHS 432. The following week the Indians were completely outclassed by Northampton 53-0. On Octo¬ ber 7, SHS played its first home game of the season and eased by Smithfield 12-6. Success was short-lived, however, as the following week the Indians met a powerful Deep Creek team and suffered a recordbreaking 63-0 defeat. The next week the Indians returned home to play highly favored Prince George. Playing their best game of the year, the Indians turned back Prince George 7-6 before a large home¬ coming crowd. Following their fine performance against Prince George, the Indians lost another close one to the Holland Dutchmen 19-14. This was followed by a 13-7 loss to James Blair and a 0-0 tie with Virginia Beach. In the final game with arch rival Franklin, the Indians turned to the form they showed against Prince George and won over Franklin and the homefield jinx 6-0.
