CROSS COUNTRY 1960 The Cross Country team led by Dick Kinzie and Ed Story completed a successful season with two wins and two losses. The competition for these meets consisted of Group I Schools. The most im¬ proved runner can be none other than Keith Tinkham. These top men supported by Richard Darden, A1 Ballard, and Clyde Marks competed in several of the state and international meets. In each meet these boys out performed teams from much larger schools. Track 1959-60 The Southampton track team, competition for the third year, suffered severly as a result of sick¬ ness and injury. There were some outstanding performers on the track team that will not return for actionforthe 1960-61 year. Tim Fuller, Bill Partridge, and FoxUrquhart are the men lost by grad- uationfor this season. Tim injured in the District meet was unable to perform in the state meet and Fox was just nosed out in dead heats to be kept from entering the state meet. The following men were District Champions in this event: Dick Kinzie, the mile; Ed Story, the half mile; and the 440 mile relay team. The mile relay team won the district and the state champ¬ ionship for the second consecutive year. With two of the boys returning, Bobby and Billy Stainback, the relay team should be strong again this year. The prospects for this year ' s team are good. Robert Lee Duke, Lewis Story and Sidney Faucette should strengthen the field events. Such men as Richard Darden, Earl Harrell, Clyde Marks, Pete Pope, Sterling Marks should give depth to the team. Gillette Bryant, in the high jump with Charles Ward and Earl HarreU in the pole vault should present a strong group in this field. In the sprints Bobby and Billy Stainback and Albert Harrell should present adequate personnel for this activity. The team this year will have the new incentive of a new track. At the present time their home meets are scheduled at this time. This is another step in our program made possible by the work of the Southampton Educational Corporation and the many interested friends of the school. 98
