PH®? ' LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA Virginia High School League THE HEARTBEAT OF SOUTHAMPTON The man who leads our teachers, The teachers who lead our minds, The friends that we take with us, And the friends we leave behind. The clubs which broaden the scope Of learning, and give us a stronger grip. The sports which build our bodies, and teach us good sportsmanship. The books, the music, the tasks, That challenge and inspire us too, The way each school day beg ins the same, But teaches us something new. The dances, and the ball games, And the friendly atmosphere, The sock hops and the pep rallies That make us yell and cheer. This, the Heartbeat of Southampton, Is recorded here with pride, Lest we forget the important part It played in all our lives. Faced with a tremendous rebuilding job, the Indians played with four, five, and sometimes six sophomores in the lineup. The next week at Gloucester the Indians were again nosed out 27-21, even though SHS rolled up 442 yards rushing to GHS 432. The following week the Indians were completely outclassed by Northampton 53-0. On Octo¬ ber 7, SHS played its first home game of the season and eased by Smithfield 12-6. Success was short-lived, however, as the following week the Indians met a powerful Deep Creek team and suffered a recordbreaking 63-0 defeat. The next week the Indians returned home to play highly favored Prince George. Playing their best game of the year, the Indians turned back Prince George 7-6 before a large home¬ coming crowd. Following their fine performance against Prince George, the Indians lost another close one to the Holland Dutchmen 19-14. This was followed by a 13-7 loss to James Blair and a 0-0 tie with Virginia Beach. In the final game with arch rival Franklin, the Indians turned to the form they showed against Prince George and won over Franklin and the homefield jinx 6-0. The competition for these meets consisted of Group I Schools. The most im¬ proved runner can be none other than Keith Tinkham. These top men supported by Richard Darden, A1 Ballard, and Clyde Marks competed in several of the state and international meets. In each meet these boys out performed teams from much larger schools. Track 1959-60 The Southampton track team, competition for the third year, suffered severly as a result of sick¬ ness and injury. There were some outstanding performers on the track team that will not return for actionforthe 1960-61 year. Tim Fuller, Bill Partridge, and FoxUrquhart are the men lost by grad- uationfor this season. Tim injured in the District meet was unable to perform in the state meet and Fox was just nosed out in dead heats to be kept from entering the state meet. The following men were District Champions in this event: Dick Kinzie, the mile; Ed Story, the half mile; and the 440 mile relay team. The mile relay team won the district and the state champ¬ ionship for the second consecutive year. With two of the boys returning, Bobby and Billy Stainback, the relay team should be strong again this year. The prospects for this year ' s team are good. Robert Lee Duke, Lewis Story and Sidney Faucette should strengthen the field events. Such men as Richard Darden, Earl Harrell, Clyde Marks, Pete Pope, Sterling Marks should give depth to the team. Gillette Bryant, in the high jump with Charles Ward and Earl HarreU in the pole vault should present a strong group in this field. In the sprints Bobby and Billy Stainback and Albert Harrell should present adequate personnel for this activity. The team this year will have the new incentive of a new track. At the present time their home meets are scheduled at this time. This is another step in our program made possible by the work of the Southampton Educational Corporation and the many interested friends of the school. 98 Q ' wls Varsity Basketball Oeam First row: left to right: L. Leading pitchers were Joe Dail 7-0, and Doug Tucker 4-1. Southampton will miss these seniors next year - co-captains Dennis Maddrey and Joe Dail; Bobby Bryant, Bobby Prince, Grant Brock, Paul Peyton, Bobby Story, and Bo Shiller. Returning next year will be such players as A1 Ballard, Aurelius Brant¬ ley, Tommy Futrell, Wingate Futrell, Ronnie Griffin, Jay Horne, Kenny Porter, Johnnie Rawls, Doug Tucker, Roland Vaughan, and H.
