It offers opportunities for those interested in playing football, basketball, baseball, track and cross country. The coaches and teams strive for victory while adhering to the principles of good sportsmanship. The following records speak for themselves in showing the development of these teams. The Indians finished the ' 59 season with 6 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. After a scoreless tie with Emporia, the Indians started rolling and won the next two games The fourth game stunned the Indians and they lost the next two also. After this three-game streak of bad luck, the SHS eleven bounced back with a victory over title-contender Holland in a regular mud battle. The Indians then rolled on to win their last three games, the last one being a victory over arch-rival Franklin. 85 L Martha Cobb Claudia Edwards Pat Drake Susan Hill Homecoming Queen Betty Sue Lowe Attendants Barbara Cutright 86 Front Row: B. The team raced to 20 straight victories before being defeated by the Waynesboro team, now the state champions. Southampton won the District I, Group II championship by defeating Holland, Gloucester, and Virginia Beach. Southampton turned back a strong Virginia Beach quintet to win the championship after defeating a high-scoring Gloucester team. The success of this team is a tribute to the members of the team and to the families which they represent. This is a team by which many SHS teams in the future may set their sights. Team work has been a consistent feature. Never has sportsmanship been more evident in a high school team. The players were the leaders; each realized the importance of team work, sportsman¬ ship, practice, and competitive spirit. The importance of individuals to the team is hard to measure for all have contributed much. The Southampton team will miss its seniors next year These include Co-captains Tim Fuller and Joe Bail, Bobby Bryant, Bobby Story, Bobby Prince, and Paul Peyton. Returning next year will be such players as Jay Horne, Charles Ward, Ed Story, Richard Darden, Tommy Futrell, A1 Ballard, and David Halsey. J. Lassiter, Manager; A. Ballard, E. Story, R. Darden, D. High scorers for the team were Freshman, Martha Barnes with a total of 140 points; Senior Rita O’Berry with 131 points and Junior, Ruby English with 66points to her credit. The Mile Relay Team won recognition in every meet in whicn it participated by placing second in the Virginia Tech Relays, first in the Virginian Pilot Relays, first in the District track meet, first in the State track meet, and by winning the 880 yard relay in the Tidewater meet. One saver has suggested: Start realistically; follow through doggedly!” Let us add just two thoughts. First, to start realistically means to take into account all one’s fixed expenses and usual living costs. Only thus can one determine how much can reasonably be saved each payday. Second, to follow through dog¬ gedly on a regular savings program shouldn’t be hard for a person of ordinary will power—who starts realistically. Open a savings account with us and try it!
