The team began the season with five straight wins, which extended their unbeaten record to 14 games. The sixth game, whose result bore decisive effects on the Indians in their bid for a district championship, ended the SHS winning streak. 48 After winning their next two games, the Indians played another one of the toughest teams in the district. York, who eventually won the district title, furnished Homecoming opposition. The York boys emerged as the winners but Southampton, even in losing, had nothing to be ashamed of; they made a noble effort, possibly the best of the season. The next and last game of the year was with Franklin. The Broncos, arch rivals, and a good team, jumped to an early advantage. This loss followed the pattern of the previous two with the score close enough for either team to win in the final minutes. Placing sixth in the district, the Indians proved, against top-flight competition, to be one of the best teams in the league. . . Coach Davis . . . 49 m fjiiBnii ..A. r mwrnimtmnmr m i . -.M—- k ' j. With a combination of height and experi¬ ence, the team expected to run up a long list of victories. The schedule consisted of 17 games with 12 conference dates to determine district champions. By midseason the team had compiled a 5-1 record in con¬ ference play and had an excellent chance of going ahead to win berth in the district championship playoffs. 55 1 X. First Row: J. Bryant, S. The Varsity Club invites as members those boys and girls who have lettered in sports. Its purpose is to promote greater interest in athletics and to encourage good sportsmanship. Also, it stimulates school spirit through its activities. In the fall the club sponsored the crowning of a queen and the homecoming dance. The annual athletic banquet is given each spring for members and guests. The Varsity Club boasts of its unusual initiation procedure which provides good fun for the whole school.
