This is ... Working J obs, they ' re great! The money, the new friends, and the inde¬ pendence. Well, the money is nice to have, but....is it really worth the effort? Those with good salaries usually say, Yeah, man, it ' s cool , and those of us who get paid didily squat might give a different reply. The friends...well... that de¬ pends on whether you like the people you work with or if you just put up with them because you like your pay- Mike Conroy, one of SWHS ' s finast counts the cold hard cash of the day ' s receipts. check at the end of the week. Then, of course, there is the first time your work schedule conflicts with your social schedule. That ' s when you hit the ask-off book ' ' A.K.A., the excuse book . Mow I don ' t know if you have one of those at your place of employment (the concept is fairly easy to understand - it is merely a book in which you ask off certain days from work ). Where 1 work the book gets used quite a bit. There is also a little mat¬ ter of your boss . That of¬ ten evil person who makes you do what you ' re sup¬ posed to do, and never lets you rest - because there is always something to be done (which happens to be my boss ' s personal favorite saying). I ' m sure you know that feeling (yeah, that ' s right, the one that goes along with the fake smile) when the boss comes out of hiding - oh I mean out of his office and asks if everything is done and put away. Then you start wondering if you remembered to do this or if you did that right. Eventual¬ ly you get to go home and relax and hopefully forget all about your day at work. Student Life 13

This is... How we learn E veryday we force ourselves to get up very early in the morning to come to school and learn. We are taught just about every¬ thing we need to know in this building, from solv¬ ing a mile-long math problem to writing es¬ says, and chasing a ball around a dirty gym floor. They even offer us courses in child develo- pement (so we might un¬ derstand ourselves bet¬ ter). Cooking, so we ll know how to put popcorn in the microwave and watch it pop; typing-the art of pressing tiny keys without looking at them; wood-how to make a shelf, and chorus, how to sing and read music. Let us not forget those for¬ eign languages that are needed to get into a good ' ' college. More importantly though, they put us in an atmosphere where we must learn to get along with others. We learn so much everyday. Learning doesn ' t always have to be done in a classroom under the direction of a teacher. Sometimes our friends are our teachers, or surprisingly enough we might learn some¬ thing on our own. Learning is not con¬ fined within school walls or school grounds. Our parents and brothers or sisters are great teach¬ ers, if we took the time to listen we could learn a lot. What about our em¬ ployers and the custom¬ ers we deal with every day? Have you ever gone people watching ? You know, when you go to the beach and look at all the people passing by, or you ' re just sitting in your car at a red light. You see things you liked or didn ' t like about them. It was then that you began learning about yourself. You were growing up and that ' s what learning is all about. Remember books and homework are im¬ portant, but so are peo¬ ple. All are the tools nec¬ essary for learning. One lone door awaits open at the end of the empty hallway. This is the picture many students have seen. Yes, you are late to class. 14 Student Life
