The fact that Mark Samsel, Shari Sarvela and Tom Riordan; Linda LeBlanc and Terry Armstrong; Tom Dennis and Greg Clinton were voted best friends does not mean that these are the only friends but an example of the multitude. The final outcome? are no longer just stu? dents passing through U halls of SWHS but rne crass of 1985 ready tq face the world! Remember all those home foot¬ ball games? The sound of the band drum beating with our hearts, or the spirit-filled track team cheering onward? Re¬ member the first day of school walking over the new tile pro¬ claiming our home ? Remem¬ ber seeing the banner SENIORS AT LAST and the feeling of pow¬ er we had inside? Power like Mr. T as portrayed by Stacey Math- ewson on Senior Night! We have carried this power throughout the year and we will always re¬ member when we were “king of the jungle. Remember When. { 5 ,4e e6 P ° fc, O ' V Vf ' o ° 6 It ' s Saturday, the pressure is on, the crowd is tense. Do the faces of Joey, Chris, Leroy, Gary and Peter remind you of anything? Football Season! Could anyone ever forget that Saturday afternoon at Rockville High when South finally has the chance ;to show what they could do. Victory proved to be the word of the day. This game signifies one example of the spirit of South Wind¬ sor High. Snapshots. . . ►.V. v A 3k 41 l ix Everyone has different ways of just wanting to have fun. Some Seniors have an enjoyable time jumping around the stage in pillowcases. Other Seniors have fun initiating Katie who gets to carry her teddy bear around all day while in her pajamas. Smile Andy, we got you! After all John has been through, he can still give us a smile. While Kelley can take time out from her homework to pose for us. i A i I • II j i Everyone at South Windsor High has their own ideas about what makes our school special. Some people believe that it is the free¬ dom to do what interests them the most. Such as Michelle Lee taking pictures or Karen Pola drawing. Others like Linda, Terry, Liz, Dave and Lori show us that just being able to make people smile can be the most rewarding of all. Time Of Change As seniors we look back on the times we have spent together. We realize in what way each and everyone of us has changed. Maybe it ' s just a fashion change” or a different hair style . Sometimes it ' s not so easy to see the changes in ourselves or others. It may be that we have matured in our way of thinking and have left our idols” behind us. Changing is like the passing of seasons. It happens whether we want it to or not. Jackie, like many of us, would like to spend everyday outside enjoying the fresh, cool air but winter will inevitably descend upon us, just like the passing of the years. While we have been here at SWHS everyone of us has changed in some way. May we never forget the way we were then and never fail to appreciate the way we are now! 12 Rare Momenrs. . . We will al¬ ways remember the times when we have gotten to¬ gether with good friends and achieved that special feeling of closeness. A close¬ ness that only happens when we try new things to¬ gether, such as what Thom¬ as Rod are doing. Some Sophomore friends also get together to share a maga¬ zine, while Gina finds some time away to do her home¬ work. These are all truly un- forgetable moments. 15 1 ?S5 Now that we ' re seniors let ' s propose a toast to all the great memories that we cherish the most Remember the first day we came into this school we were just little sophomores trying hard to be cool We got pushed around at times we lost all pride we were even scared but we took it in stride as our junior year rolled around so fast we studied our hardest to make our knowledge last our junior prom brought memories so dear remembering that night we ' ll always shed a tear Now all of our school days have gone by so fast now proudly we say we ' re seniors at last We entered the doors as the ruling class but to our dismay those days did soon pass before we knew it senior night was here we initiated the underclassmen despite all their fear For our senior reception La Rennaisance was the place where we danced til dawn smile ' s never leaving our face finally came the moment our dream had now come true Graduation day was upon us we ' d start our lives a new Although we ' re going our separate ways we know we ' ll never part we ' ll always keep a special feeling for friends deep within our hearts. -Kelley Esten 16 In Dedication To Mr. Robert Noyd Dedication 17 Mr. Robert Noyd has dared to be himself, to show us what he genuinely is. He has expressed his teaching in a way we can learn and relate. His jokes and scientific analogies brighten our day as well as aid in our learning. We ' ve had the privilege to know and be influenced by someone whose honesty is overwhelming, a man whose determi¬ nation to act according to his own beliefs will be an inspi¬ ration to us always. He has made us not only recognize our talents and potential, but also realize that to become King of the Jungle”, we must always strive to achieve our goals. All those who have greatly benefited from knowing him will truly miss his encouragement, dedica¬ tion, sincerity and lastly, all those Little Debbie parties. One of the hardest things students have to deal with is the prob¬ lem of arranging their time in order to fit all the homework into their schedule, while trying to earn extra money. To add to the commotion, a majority of the students have various other activitites, such as interscholastic sports, and interviews with colleges. LEFT TO SWHS: My reat lunchroom food-fighting ability. 58 Seniors THE BROWN BAG For those of us who opt to bring our own we are called the brown baggers. (Why are lunch bags brown anyway?) The con¬ tents of the bag are known to each of us, the amount and variety of food depending on who made our lunch. First there ' s the sandwich, if Mom made it it ' s probably nutritious meat and cheese on wheat bread. Dad puts all the week ' s leftovers between two slices of white bread and cuts it on a diagonal. If I have to make it it ' s Peanut Butter and Jelly. Next is the potatoe chips, Doritos, or Fritos. After these nutritious foods are consumed then the best part, the dessert, cookies, Oreos or Chips Ahoy are South Windsor ' s favorites. Devil Dogs and Twinkies are embarassing so we never bring them. Finally we have to wash this all down with milk- the red carton, of course, and the coolest students drink it straight, no straw needed. Finally our brown bags re¬ main nameless. The stigma of a name and homeroom bring back the past days of grammer school and our mothers bringing our forgotten lunch to the office. KEN SMITH LISA MARY SMITH STEPHANIE SNYDER § TRACY A. I ' m Diana Schindler from West-Germany. When my parents allowed me to stay for one year with our friends in America. I was very excited. First because it was the first time I was away from home for a whole year and second be¬ cause I didn ' t quite know what to expect. As a little girl I thought of America as a land of Indians and cowboys, riding on beautiful horses and living either in a Western city on a big ranch or in a tent. The pictures, my mother brought back from New England and the geography lessons at school finally changed my mind as I compared America with Germany. Now I know that there are a lot of differences between the two countries. The villages and towns is Germany seem to be much smaller because the houses are very close together. The houses are surrounded by small yards, enclosed by a fence, a small wall or a bridge The relationship between the younger and the older people is more formal than in America. At school I found more differences than anywhere else I think the school system in Germany is more complicated because instead of different levels at one school we have separate schools and also another kind of grading system. In the beginning I had a hard time with these and a few other changes but whenever I had problems, somebody helped. I want to thank you for being so nice and for helping md. Dear everyone in the Class of ' 85 and everyone in SWHS, This year (1984-1985), stayed in America, will be never forgotten through all my life. It was my first time to live with American family, to go to American high school, and to have really good American friends. When I came here, in August, my English was so poor that I could hardly understand and speak (even now still my English is not getting better). And I worried that I could do well at school. But, in fact, everyone I met at school was very kind, friendly and helpful. I believe that my playing football this year, however that was the first and the last time for me. must be one of my great experiences in America, for I did touchdown, however that was in J.V. game While I have lived in America. I have thought about my family and my friends seriously and appreciated them for my first time. Though many friends asked me, Are you missing some¬ one in Japan, like your parents or friends? and I always answered No. I ' m not. Those are both true, because I have good friends both in Japan and in America. Finally, I would like to say to you Thank you very much. And also thanks my host family and my little sister, and my friends from other countries. And I hope your futures will be full of luck. And I have to say thank you to all teachers especially Miss Cloutier and Mr. Benford. P.S. When someone come to Japan let me know. My ad¬ dress is: 6-3-19 Higashitushimi, Hoya-City, Tokyo Japan, 202. My tele¬ phone number is: 011-81-424-61-1846 (from the U S.) KARINA PRIZONT-(18)-Argentina As an exchange student I had the chance to meet a lot of people and to be a member of a great American family. The biggest difference I found in the U S. is school, mostly be¬ cause it was the first time that I could choose the courses I wanted to take. Another difference is that in my country there ' s no drinking age but of course, when people are al¬ lowed to do something, that is when there are no problems.. I learned to appreciate the little things of my everyday life at home. I also miss the public transportation that we have (buses, taxis, trains, subways). I think it is very important for the social life. I ' d like to thank all the students for being so friendly and the teachers for trying to help me in eveything they could. I will always remember South Windsor as a special place PATTY GARCIA MARTINA WEISSHUN (16) Hamburg - West Germany My name is Patricia Garcia and I am from Colombia, South America I am happy to be here I have gone to different places, and I have known many people. I am living with an American family and that help me to know some American customes. Also I know now how is the American High School and I think it ' s good because you can choose the subject you want to study. I will never forget my visit to United States. This last year I had the opportunity to attend South Windsor High as a Exchange Student. I met many different people and made nice friends. I learned a lot about your country and also to appreciate the things I left at home There are many differences between your country and my country. School is less restricted at home than in the U.S.A. but in the higher school you also have to take more courses Yes. there is no drinking age and No the people do not drink all the time. You can ' t compare the countries or split them up in positive and negative but we certainlly learn much from each other. Thank you South Windsor High my friends, teachers and es¬ pecially my host family that you helped me so much and that you have let me take part in your activities and lives and made a teriffic year for me! 108 Exchange Students Harvard Book Award Daughters of American Revolution Brown Book Award Yale Book Award Award Recipients 109 MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Sandy Colaccino Mike Koenig MOST UNIQUE Thorne Palmer Angela Martino MOST SCHOOL SPIRIT Kim Harris Rob Couture BEST DRESSED Dave Patria Angela Strother BEST LOOKING Tom Riordan Karen Pola CLASS CLOWNS Kim Harris Rob Couture BEST BODY Tracy Garofalo Rich Duclos GOLDEN SHOVEL AWARD Al De Rosa Kelley Esten MOST VERSATILE Beth Schumacher Dave Giroux 111 D r D e 0 s y s u p The days of dress codes are far gone and the choice of how we dress is ours. After losing almost a dozen veteran players to the class of 1984, the returing Bobcats began its long workout to rebuild its awesomely power packed team. Approximately 600 laps, 431 sprints, 295 hills and 409 miles later, the Bobcats emerged victoriously to clinch the first ever C.C.C. East Fieldhockey title. The conference brought to So. Windsor new challenges such as harder teams, rougher players and tougher games. Schools never played before such as Enfield, Fermi and Windham proved fo house the toughest games in the season. Not only did the long practices help the teams ' overall exhibitions but also the confidence of the coaches, Mrs. Cutter and Margaret Brady, help to aid the teams enthusiasm. ■ - ■ 149 Senior Players Front (L-R) M. Volleyball It was a season of firsts: the first year in the new conference, the C.C.C; the first year of learning how to count to 3 by saying 1,2, 2, 3 ; and for the first time in South Windsor Volleyball history, the ball was actually caught in a game. The season provided bigger and tougher oppo¬ nents yet the Bobcats held their own. Playing well againist tough teams like Fermi and Rockville and starting the season by beating Ellington, whom in the past the Bobcats found unbeatable, gave the team a record of ten wins and eight losses- enough to qualify for the State Tournaments. The Volleyball team also supplied the All C.C.C team with two outstanding players. There were many shared times to be remebered as well: The bus trips with Huey and The Boss, plus John Cougar, the trip to New Milford, seeing the underclassmen gathering male phone numbers, and the very special party given to the Seniors. t Volleyball 163 164 Basketball Front (L-R) T.
