Old Testament With Deep Appreciation The Senior Class of 1974 dedicates this Centurion to Mr. John Nishan. Let me tell you of a man who personifies courage. He has been himself and gained genuine respect among the students. Leaving himself open to be hurt, he has left his lofty teaching tower and come down to feel the sensibili¬ ties of being a student. He became involved with our pain, our challenges, and our hopes, accepting the danger in¬ herent in such an involvement. Mr. Nishan above all, truly cares. They give trophies for good athletes, good students, and good musicians but not for good people. Yet, in a very real sense, the students of South Windsor are his trophies. All our future achievements are in part his because he has helped to make us what we are. Mr. Nishan excels at being a person and in doing so he has brought out the goodness lying dormant in us all. Bringing forth this basic humaness should be the genuine goal of any educator; before becoming a scientist, a policeman, or a teacher, a man is first a man. This is where our central challenge lies, and where Mr. Nishan is at his best as a teacher. Wordsworth once said, “the best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kind¬ ness and love.” Mr. Nishan, this is just to let you know we remember. Jeff Nesteruk 6 Gratitude is the memory of the heart. A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. — Henry Adams Thou wert my guide, philosopher, and friend. — Alexander Pope 7 In Memory of . . . Diane Marques The Song Beyond by Julia Collins Ardayne April will come There will be a time of quickening water And a returning of the sun. And though I may no longer find your hand When dogwood bursts along the winter bough, Across my memories I shall hear You call to me along the searching wind; Or in a song unsung, beyond the ear. 1 1 Those having torches will pass them on to others Administration Dr. Robert W.
