Salute, Amice is a particularly apropos way of beginning our yearbook. It is not just the traditional welcome to the Freshman Class, but one that is extended to us all—the faculty, the school board, the four classes. For these are strangers all to the cor¬ ridors of our new school. Theoretically, on June 16, 1962, Ellsworth Memorial High School ceased to exist. But the best qualities of that school— qualities cultivated and honed to sharpness for over a quarter- century—are retained here. There always was a certain atmos¬ phere in that school; call it esprit de corps for lack of a better synonym. It was not so much a feeling among the students, but rather between the faculty and the students; it was that feeling of closeness which can only be created by a small school. And yet that feeling, in a high school of six hundred, is still with us. Qualities such as this are intangible things, metaphysical entities which transcend description. Words are below them. The influence of the past is strong on our present; our school holds that firmly in mind. Tradition itself is tradition here, and one reason for the surprising unity of our student body. The ■ preservation of the past is perpetuated in other ways here: the Centurion is culturally descended from the civilizations of Rome; centurions were the democratic leaders, the select soldiers of the Roman legions. Part of this heritage too is the beginning of our foreword, from the Latin of Rome. ' ' mm Salute, Amice is more than just a greeting. It is one essence of our school spirit bound up with the tradition of our past so that the two become fittingly inextricable. We offer it in that particular meaning: Solute, Amice —greetings, friend.
