We sponsored a football and a basketball dance. On December 20 we held our Christmas party in the gymnasium. We were all well pleased with our class rings when they arrived in March. On February 18 and 19, we presented our Junior Class play, g'CaSh and Carrief, With the memory of a very successful prom, which we gave on May 14 in honor of the Seniors, we completed our Junior year and we are now looking forward to returning next term, as Seniors. SENIOR YEAR We began our last year at South High with a class numbering 70. We occupied rooms 7 and 20 with Miss Sanders and Mr. Spotts as our leaders. May 27-9th Grade Commencement. .lune 5-Baccalaureate Service. .Iune 7-Commencement Exercises. 47 The Band The South Williamsport High School Band started this school year 148-49l with a new director, Mr. Robert Bailey. We held some practices before school started, and by the tenth of September we were ready to begin playing for the football games. Every morning, and sometimes afternoons after school, we marched up and down the field, regardless of the condition of weather. ln October, South Williamsport held its annual Mummers Parade in which the band participated. Then on Armistice Day we paraded in Williamsport. ' Oflicers of the band were elected in October. President was Desayles Gray, Vice- President-Charles Reamer, Secretary-Tre-asurer-Nancy Kolb, and Uniform Custo- dian-Vic Carlson. Mr. Bailey formulated the idea of band dues, and we voted on it with everyone agreeing. These dues were kept by the treasurer, and used for parties, in which the band members took part during the year. On November 30, at the annual Football Banquet, Mr. Bailey announced those who had earned letters received for playing two years or more in the band. For a few weeks after football season ended, we had practice only two or three times a week, but when we started getting our concert music, we went back to practice every morning before school hours. At the beginning of 1949 we were still coming to practice every morning each week. We worked very hard on our concert music. Many new faces were added to the band, while most of the old ones were still there. On March 16, 1949 there was an assembly program at which the band played several selections. Then on the evening of the same day, we gave a concert of the same music for the public. To end things for the school term, we gave our Spring Concert during music week. 48 Banking Staff The Banking Staff is one of the busiest organizations ill the high school. This group keeps account of all the money deposited by the students of the South Williamsport schools in the schools banking program. They count, check, double check, and wrap all the money banked by members of the student body. The faculty advisers are Mr. Spotts and the Supervising Principal Mr. A. B. Elder. All scoring was done in the second half. Due to an ankle injury received in this game, Don Fullmer was lost for the rest of the season. SOUTH vs. EMPORIUM . . . 7-6 South retaliates by spanking Emporium. Ralph Johns scored on a quarter-back sneak, and Joe Gore shoved his way over for the deciding point after touchdown. SOUTH vs. BLOOMSBURG . . . 18-13 Getting away slowly in the first half, South had a deficit of I2 points at half time. South came back strong in the second half to hit pay dirt after 4 plays. Ed Holtz was high man with 12 points. It was a game which was evenly matched in everything except score. SOUTH vs. DAIXVILLE . . . 6-I2 Playing away from home for the first time this year, South ran into unforseen trouble in the form of the referee. South made 2 brilliant goal line stands and then G4 had the game snatched from their hands by a pass and a Hunked play. Ed Holtz scored for South with a pass from Ralph Johns. SOUTH vs. BELLEFONTE . . . 6-13 Suffering the loss of two key linemen in the 1st period, South was shoved into the mud by a scrappy Bellefonte squad. Although South could gather only 10 yards from scrimmage its passing was a constant threat. Vic Corini scored on a pass from Ralph Johns. SOUTH vs. MONTOURSVILLE . . . 14-7 South breaks its losing streak in a rugged neighborhood battle. This game was played with all stops out as is characteristic when the two borough schools meet. Vic Gorini went 70 yards on an interception. SOUTH vs. SELINSGROVE . . . 13-2 South continues its winning ways in a game which proved to be all Southis. Smarting from undue publicity concerning the Montoursville game, South went all out to stop the Seals. The same Ralph ,lohns to Vic Corini pass crashed in for another touchdown, and Ed Holtz scored on an end run. SOUTH vs. LOCK HAVEN . . . 0-32 Although South held Lock Haven scoreless in the first period, the flood walls were finally broken, and Lock Haven poured through for three quick touchdowns. This is the only game of the season which featured South's not hitting the scoring column. SOUTH vs. JERSEY SHORE . . . 6-33 South's football team left the field at half time on the short end of a 12 to 6 count. The Bulldogs, capitalizing on every break and making quite a few of their own, commenced to tramp all over the luckless Mounts. The sophomores were chosen by a group of teachers. They are Mary Lee Stoutenburg, and Shirley Field. This year there was a new addition to the cheerleading squad. Four cheerleaders were chosen from the seventh and eighth grade. This peppy group consisted of ,lonquil Ball. Kathleen Miller. Theresa Hughes and Amy Davis. They led the cheering at all the Jr. lli. Football games and at the jr. Varsity Basketball games. 72 l I I Gurls Athletlcs The Senior girls have participated in various sports this year. Each girl has worked hard for l00 points which entitles her to a letter. Points are gained through participating on teams of the various sports, being on the honor team of that sport or captaining a particular team. The Seniors had two basketball teams this year. Many of the girls earned their letters through individual sports such as swimming and bowl- ing in which each girl went swimming or bowling without a team and turned her cards into her respective manager and was given credit.
