If it was marching in a parade or just planning that special thing to say in a yearbook, the Wildcats seemed to know just what it took to make 1983, “The Year of the Cat. The marching Wildcats proudly began the year by performing in the Little Italy Festival Parade. The band was joined by the spirited cheerleaders and the new school mascot. Throughout the entire year individual Wildcats displayed their talents and brought pride to the school. From the athletic fields, to dramatic productions students helped to make the entire community know it was The Year of the Cat. Proudly Display Old Gold And Black s S.V.H.S. Communication Lines Student Council once again came through for the student body in good times as well as bad. Under the guidance of sponsors, Mr. Boatman and Miss Dowdy lots of enjoyment was brought to S.V. through convocations and the traditional Christmas Dance. Many other items of interest, such as the pop machine in the gym, were pushed by Student Council in a successful attempt to meet the needs of the student body. Cadet Corp also displayed utmost courtesy and intelligence as well as availability to the benefit of all. They were involved in such services as tour guides, aiding incoming freshmen, orientations, and open house. Their knowledge of the school structure and administration proved outstanding and they were more than appreciated by the faculty, student body, and the community. This was certainly a year for Student Leadership at South Vermillion. WCAT retained two former disc jockeys and took on three more just as promising. Their daily telecasts, 2nd hour and before school, proved to be a vital and appreciated part of administration. Fenoglios Reign At Festival 82 The Little Italy Festival was once again a big hit. The celebration began with the parade on Friday and continued throughout Monday, Labor Day. South Vermillion's own band was a highlight of the parade and S.V. cheerleaders offered their talents as well. The annual Queen of Grapes contest was held and Jeanna Banks was crowned 1982 LIFT Queen. The Queen and her court were a common sight throughout the weekend, as duty called them to various different places of the festival. Jack and Margo Fenoglio were also named Re and Regina, 1982. Many contests were held including the drawing for the trip to Italy. Over all the festival was one of felicity and joy shared by everyone who participated. Homecoming 82: The Year Of The (top left) Student Council President Brian Mcleish acts as Master of Cermonies at the Queen Coronation, (right) The 1982 Bonfire was a huge success!!! nUNN DfSOiTTWE 10 Cat. Homecoming 82 was one of fierce competition, ecstacy, and extremely high spirits. It all started when those ever-amazing cheerleaders and their sponsors devised an unforgetable Homecoming week. Monday was ghost day as well as poster day. Seniors and Freshman earned a first place for their talented efforts. Tuesday was pajama day: put those mustangs to sleep. Wednesday was no sweat day. Thursday everyone punked out for the Wildcats and Friday was the traditional old gold and black day. Crystal Dalton was crowned homecoming Queen, 1982 in Monday's coronation before the student body. Her court consist of: Seniors, Shelly Brown and Jami Malone, Junior, Lori Dowdy, Sophomore, Sheri Hisle, and Freshman, Debbie Jones. Thursday night every class worked hard to accumulate spirit points on the football field in class competition and then let off their steam at the bonfire immediately afterwards. The bonfire was proudly displayed by its makers, the senior guys. The seniors also earned the right to throw in the dummy. Finally after a week of fierce competition the Wildcats pulled together to cheer the football team on to a big 28-6 victory over those Fountain Central Mustangs. WAY TO GO CATS!!! At halftime Queen Crystal and her court posed for flashing cameras, the Juniors took first place in the float competition with Wildcats Munch the Mustangs, and the 1982 spirit plaque was awarded to the class of 1985. But that's not all! Saturday night was the annual Homecoming Dance. The theme. Sharing the Night Together, was well carried out by the student body and a special thanks for the dance goes out to Mrs. Conner, Mrs. Turchi, and the 1982-83 cheerleaders of South Vermillion High School. But an even bigger thanks goes out to the S.V.H.S. student body for making Homecoming 82 the huge success it was. (top left) Spook those Mustangs!! Breakin Free in 83 seemed an appropriate theme for this class at S.V.H.S. From August 24, 1979, as incoming Freshmen, through May 22, 1983, as outgoing grads, they made themselves noticed in more ways than one: Never before had a class at S.V.H.S. paid the cost of having their senior portraits in color, this was the 1st class to complete, in full, the newer S.V. school system as it is, junior high through senior high, and certainly this class was not lacking in talent and diversifying skills. However, in spite of all this, 1983 seniors experienced many letdowns and heartaches. There remained feelings of regret as well as mixed emotions at the close of the year over many unhappy situations. We, the class of 1983, may not be the most remembered class to others, but to each other we will never be forgotten. Whether it be in the locker rooms, commons, or the teachers' lounge, roving reporters were a common sight at S.V. Editor for the Wildcat was Jeff Vicars, while junior editor was Dawn Grange. Advisor Marilyn Hawkins made herself available 100% to the staff as they put out the bi-weekly production of the newspaper. Page editors, Doug Robertson, Angie Jones, Connie Blackford, and Jeri Mishler, along with the reporters combined talents with the editors and advisor to make school news come alive to the student body. The summer of 1982 found yearbookies Judy Hoke, Debbi Marietta and Sharia Vandeventer at Hanover Yearbook Camp, busily preparing for the upcoming year at S.V.H.S. At camp the three won top awards in the category of layout design. The fall of 1982 found the entire Old Gold and Black staff of sixteen selling ads, taking pictures, writing copy, sponsoring dances, and selling books. Editor Judy Hoke and advisor Joyce York, along with eight section editors worked long and hard hours throughout the year. All of these things were necessary to make the 68th edition of Old Gold and Black unforgetable. Paul Battman attempts to reassure his fiancee, Laura Caldwell. S.V.'s fall play, The Bride's Bouquet, was one of enlightening comedy but at the same time full of mystery and suspense. Under the watchful direction of Elaine Gambaiani and Marilyn Haw- kins, a unique production was created by both the performers and the crew. Six weeks of gruel- ing practice boiled down to two nights of an outstanding performance and feverish excite- ment. The cast consisted of five seniors as well as many returning thespians. Leads were Judy Hoke, Jan Komro, and Tim Sturm. Student direc- tor was junior Jeri Mishler. A closeness was de- veloped among cast and crew in bad times as well as good, and once again the South Vermillion Drama Club created a presentation never to be forgotten. The Technical Crew: Bart Mooney, Tony Becke, and Nelson Alexander. Cast: (front) Jan Komro, Tim Sturm, Sally King, Susan Roskovensky, Jamie Toppas, Gretchen Bradley, and Judy Hoke, (back) Ken Julien, Jim Muciarelli, Mark Jones, and Jim Baker, (not present) Directors: Marilyn Hawkins, and Elaine Gambaiani. 56 Bride's Bouquet (top left) Jeri Mishler, student director, puts many hours into this S.V. production, (left) Stage crew: Jeri Mishler, Kim Hills, (make-up C-man), Jill Vitalie, Sharia Vandeventer (stage manager), Lori Thomas, Norma Vandivier, Angie Jones (stage manager), Annie Hawkins, Connie Blackford (stage manager), Kim Harris, and Rob Shepard. 57 Jonathon Lancaster gleams in triumph as justice of the peace, Horace Wiggens, holds Joe to the floor. Bring Back Birdie, a sequel to the much acclaimed Bye Bye Birdie, was the 1983 spring musical. Director for the S.V. production was girl's track and choir director Ms. Fisher. Miss Nelson acted as assistant director. The cast was composed of sixty students who worked hard and attended practices faithfully to make Bring Back Birdie the success it was. Working right along side the cast was student director Mary Davis and assistant student director Diane Chambers. With such a large cast every crew member, actor, and technician knew his job was to perform well, and that they did. Everyone did his job and did it well, making March 24th and 25th 1983, nights to remember. 58 (above) Technicians: Brad Sheperd, Tony Becke, and Nelson Alexander (right) Student director — Mary Davis, and assistant Student Director — Diane Chambers Bring Back Birdie! Senior coquettes Darla Trosper and Rose Timmons store a lot of memories. 60 Cats With Style! The buzzer sounded, and suddenly it was halftime. But, entertainment was not far away. For the next ten minutes the S.V. Coquettes performed before the eager spectators and gladly displayed their talents. The 1983 Coquettes were a young drill team with only three returning seniors: Susan Roskovensky, Rose Timmons, and Darla Trosper. Rifles were Susan Roskovensky and Kim Harris. The girls attended camp during the summer, and under the direction of Miss Fisher, they continued into the school year performing on off the football field and the basketball court. 1983 Coquettes: (front): Kim Harris, Susan Roskovensky, Jan Komro, Liz Boyer, Lynda Leech, Wendy Graham, Rhonda Gibbons, and Janice Reed, (back): Toni DeFreitas, Robin Pyle, Rose Timmons, Darla Trosper, Chris Robertson, Debbie Cloud, Lisa Thomas, and Aimee Endicott. 61 Introducing The Marching Wildcats! If you're talking pride the 1983 Wildcat Band was something to be proud of. Its performances at football and basketball games was more than appreciated by the teams and the students. Besides playing at ballgames, the band also marched in parades, performed in musicals and concerts, and competed in contests. At the state band contest in Indianapolis the Marching Wildcats won a second division rating. At home the Band combined these talents with the coquettes to bring about a very enjoyable performance. Also senior drum majorette was Chris Scifres, while junior drum majorette was Cindy Stevens. Under the direction of Mrs. Glenna Gibbs, the 1983 band was very unforgetable. This was lament of many girls as they awaited the 1982 Christ- mas Dance, but the members of the student council and all the students who had purchased tickets had their prayers answered when the snow did stay away and the dance was held as planned. At the dance, couples danced to the music of Jam Unlimited and elected Jim Muciarelli as the 1982 Christmas King. Brian Mcleish and Jami Malone were chosen class sweethearts when they were elected King and Queen of the Valentine's dance. They represented the class of 83. Somewhere Down the Road, Barry Manilow's classic, was the theme of the event and it was sponsored by the Newspaper staff, under the supervision of Mrs. Marilyn Hawkins. Somewhere Down the Road seemed an appropriate theme for 1983 sweethearts Brian Mcleish and Jami Malone. Queen Darrylene Overpeck and her date Lance Dodson dance this one alone. The theme of the 1983 S.V. Prom was You and I . . . Forever. Prom CO-Chairman Kim Hills and Kris Kirkman and the Junior Class created a beautiful Junior-Senior Prom, quite unforgettable to all that attended. Also, Post Prom was enjoyed by many couples at Raquetball Club in Terre Haute during the wee hours of the morning. Overall, it proved a successful event and a highlight of that year — 1983! Tony Beke and his date move to the groove. These couples are enjoying a quiet moment during the 1983 S.V. These student efforts were recognized and awarded during special ceremonies throughout the year. There were ten new thespians inducted into the S.V. chapter of the International Thespian Society during 1983 for their outstanding participation in high school dramatics. Both the members and inductees enjoyed a dinner at Western Ribeye with advisors Marilyn Hawkins and Elaine Gambaiani. April 20, 1983 was the ceremony for Quill and Scroll. Of the new inductees the yearbook had five and the newspaper staff had six. The annual staff also retained five 1982 members of the Quill and Scroll Society. To be in this organization, you must be a junior or a senior and have acted as page editor for the newspaper or section editor for the yearbook staff, was held April 18, 1983. Students who are members of this organization hold a required, high grade point average and are active in their school extra-curricular activities. Seniors, whether they were searching for the perfect subject for a character sketch or pushing through the final act of Shakespeare's Macbeth, were always busy preparing for next year's college English classes. Somehow, through all this work, they managed to have some fun in their last year of English class. The Juniors, without the mod system for the first this year, spent most of their time studying famous American authors from Jefferson to Thoreau to Poe. Mr. Hawkins and Mrs. Pilipovich helped the classes with a job skills course which had been offered as a mod in previous years. Juniors also spent time preparing for the dreaded SAT taken in May. Sophomores did their best to get through the stories of Ceasar and To Kill a Mockingbird. Speeches were given and work was done on grammar and composition. Freshmen began their South Vermillion career by reading The Outsiders and Flowers for Algernon. They also gave several speeches and perfected their grammar and spelling. Jan Komro, a Junior, makes a point dur- ing her speech. Seniors Libby Wallace and Judy Hoke work on research papers for Senior Comp. 85 Scientific Minds At Is that the Pectoralis Major or the Latissimus Dorsi? What is the square root of 17? These were common questions asked in the science and math classes of this year. From biology to physiology, students were kept busy dissecting all kinds of creatures, while botany students studied the different processes of photosynthesis and tried to get stubborn corn and bean seeds to grow. Horticulture students studied landscaping and planted several trees. In biology, beginning science students learn about the basics of biology and how to dissect animals. The next level of the biological sciences is zoology, where students learn all about creatures from the animal world and do several different dissections. In physiology, the students learn about the human body and the ten body systems. They do a cat dissection and learn all of the bones in the human skeleton. David Shearer actually enjoys putting his math problem on the board. Susan Roskovensky measures while lab partner Chuck Kingery looks on. 86 Still More Minds At Work . . . In chemistry and physical science, students learn about the earth and the elements that make it up. In Mr. Marsh's physics class, students combine both elements of math and science in studying movement and force. In the math department, teachers were kept busier than ever with many juniors now in the advanced math classes and freshmen in geometry. The advanced math classes squeezed in some calculus at the end of the year to prepare the seniors for college. A regular calculus class is scheduled next year for those students wishing to take another year of math. I wonder if this is right? thinks Mark Jones in geometry class. Senior students Valerie Pierret, Susan Rosko- vensky, and Lory Nickle seem to enjoy doing a crayfish dissection. 88 In chemistry, Brian Edris and Rose Timmons concentrate dur- ing class. Rocky Scott and horticulture teacher Mr. Bob Byrer plant trees by the baseball dia- mond. Anita Bazanni tries not to spill her chemicals during a lab. Classes For The Business ”.2 -I There are many interesting classes for the JL ▼ X.1.I I Uwvl business minded students at SVHS. From typing to the Intensive Office Lab, there is something for everyone. In beginning typing, students learn to type business letters and small reports while increasing their speed and decreasing their errors. In second year, students apply their talent to the business area. They also learn to increase their speed and accuracy. Shorthand is a good class for those who are interested in secretarial work, and those wanting to take more efficient notes when in college. General business and business math help teach the fundamentals of the business world. In data processing, students learn how to use business machines and learn how to make programs. This is a very important class for those who plan to take computer classes in college and go into that line of work. The intensive office lab allows students to work in a real office environment doing jobs and receiving valuable work experience. This is a very important class for those who are seriously interested in going into the business field. Kris Kirkman looks enthusi- astic during a speech in busi- ness English. The intensive office lab stu- dents gather for a group pic- ture. 90 Kim Ingram takes dictation through the shorthand headsets. Industrial Strength In basic woods classes, students begin by learning about different grains of wood and the various terms used in the class. Safety is stressed as they are taught to use the many kinds of equipment. As their abilities increase, students then make blue-print designs for different objects such as cabinets, bookshelves, and cradles. While in drafting class, students learn to make scaled drawings, make up blue-prints and plans for buildings, and learn to make highly detailed drawings. They also practice several types of printing and writing. During the home economics classes, both girls and guys discover the necessities of cooking and sewing in adult life. Those participating in foods classes learn how to make simple yet good tasting dishes while learning the facts about nutrition. In sewing, students are taught to make clothing as well as to coordinate colors to make new outfits out of existing ones. They learn about textures of fabrics and how to use sewing machines. Darren Nolan concentrates on his wood project. Senior Jim Hrovat enjoys the benefits of his labor in foods class. 92 This year SVHS's foreign language department sponsored foreign language week. During the week, the student's wore French and Spanish flags, dressed in traditional outfits, and the lunch menu was read in French and Spanish each day. Though French Club didn't sponsor a trip this year, the French classes did enjoy a trip to Indianapolis where they ate French food at the Magic Pan restaurant. The Spanish Club traveled to Spain during Spring Break. Mrs. Vera Shew, Spanish teacher, served as a chaperone along with several of the students' parents. A great time was enjoyed by all, as was evident by the smiles and souveniers that were brought home. South Vermillion hosted three foreign students this year from Columbia, Belgium, and Spain. They were introduced to new customs, new food, and new lifestyles. We also learned from them, and we will miss them when they return home. This year our art department continued to bring out some very artistic talent. Oil paintings, pottery, and abstract drawings were just a few samples of the students' work that were displayed. Several creative art students took the initiative to design and paint a mural on one wall in the art room. This project was completed in time for the Open House in the fall. Deanna Porter concentrates on her painting. Our three foreign exchange students pose for the camera. 94 Language And The Arts Together Again French II students enjoy doing commer- cials. Talented artist Christy English works on her painting. Debbie Cloud, Missi Moore, Ann Antonini prepare their French skit. i Wrap Up For Academics From General Math to Advanced Calculus, from the mass of the earth to the disection of a cat, South Vermillion High School Students obtained knowledge in more than fifteen areas of study. The academic curriculum here at S.V. proved not only beneficial to the student, but challenging to both the student and teacher as well. Efforts were made toward more interesting classes and educational studies and assignments. Jim Pearman is working on an out door assignment for Horticulture class. I Cheerleaders The cheerleaders and wrestlerettes worked hard all year long and they came up with some pretty unique improvements for the school. They created a hospitality room for the opposing teams cheerleaders. They served food and drinks for them to help get more acquainted with each other. Also to help spark enthusiasm for all the teams during sectionals, they baked cookies for each member of the different teams. They attended Vincennes University Cheerleading Camp for a week this year and came home with some new awards for South Vermillion High School. They supported the teams with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement for the Wildcats and they should all be congratulated for doing such a fine job. 1982-83 Varsity Cheerleaders: (Front) Debbi Marietta, Jill Vitalie. Football Having a strong season, the 1982-83 Varsity Football Team did an excellent job out on the field. Coach Brent Anderson and the guys represented the school well throughout the entire year with their precise skills and fierce determination to win. The highlight of the season for the Cats was their Homecoming victory over Fountain Central. To top off the celebrations, the Cats showed a terrific performance by destroying their opponents 28-6. The guys closed out their season with a 6-3 record. Special awards were presented at the end of the season to Brian McLeish, Outstanding Defensive Back; Jeff Vicars, Outstanding Offensive Lineman; Jim Hrovat, Outstanding Defensive Lineman; Tim Gilman, Most Tackles; and Tim Waldrop, Most Yards Gained. Sparked by this exciting win. Coach Tim Terry and his team's success continued throughout their entire season. The Lady Cats set a new team record as they compiled seven consecutive wins. They also tied for first place in the WRC with a 7-1 record. The girls were defeated in sectional play by Turkey Run, who the Cats had beaten during the regular season. However, their 3-6 record doesn't portray the amount of talent contained on the team. Coach Duane Swisher and the girls should be complimented for their fine performances throughout the season. This year awards were presented to Libby Wallace, Mental Attitude; Debbie Cloud, Most Improved; and Lynn City, Most Valuable. The 1982-83 Boys Swim Team had a rough season in the waves. The guys worked hard in both practices and meets throughout the entire season, but only managed to compile a 1-7 record. Much credit should be given to Coach Swisher and the team for their determination and never ending enthusiasm. Only one award was given this, and it was presented to Dean Foltz, Most Points and Best Mental Attitude. 1982-83 Boys Swim Team: (Front) Bcrnie Williams, Rob Natalie, John Primeaux, Chad Smith. The boys and Coach Tom Solomon put a lot of time and effort into improving their wrestling moves and it really showed. Although wrestling is mostly an individual sport, they accomplished many things as a team. They captured the Sectional title, placed second in the WRC, and third in the S.V.H.S. Invitational. Four wrestlers won the Sectionals. Those four consist of Brian Davis, Bill Kelley, Tim Waldrop, and Darren Nolan. Tim and Darren both advanced to Semi-State where they both placed fourth. The award winners were: Most Valuable Wrestler, Tim Waldrop; Most Pins, Tim Waldrop; and Most Improved, Bill Kelley. This helped them to gain the Most Valuable Doubles Award. Doug also received the Mental Attitude Award. Jeff Randolph played number one singles for the Cats and was named the Most Valuable Singles player. This was Coach Waclawek's first year in coaching the Cats. He helped the boys to perfect their tennis strokes and it really showed. Those three consist of Ann Antonini in singles and Beth Whitaker and Shelly Brown in doubles. The girls made it to the third round in sectionals where they were defeated by Terre Haute South in a very close match. Although the team will lose several players to graduation, they are looking forward to a good season next year. The Junior Varsity Baseball Team also showed much talent this year. They ended their season with a 6-5 record. Coach Tom Solomon and the team worked very hard all spring and will be a great asset to next year's team. The school won two sectional titles. One was in volleyball and the other came from the wrestlers. Two SV wrestlers even won regional titles. They were Darren Nolan and Tim Waldrop. The Wildcats also did very well in the WRC conference. Although it was only the second year for SV in this conference, many of the teams ranked very high. Everyone should be proud of the dedication of our school's athletes and should congratulate the teams for their fine performances this year. Good job SV athletes and coaches! For instance, this book: There were many hours of work behind that journalism door and at homes to meet deadlines, demands, and goals. The best thing about this book are the people who produced it and the closeness we developed, which will never depart. I hope you too will discover a memory or moment captured and suspended in time! All of my emotions are pent up in this final copy you are now reading. For, it was you we did it for. So, I will say thanks to Mrs. York for being the best advisor anywhere, and I would have had no other, to Dick Mauer: (our rep) — it's a good thing you're talented because you're promptness wouldn't get you out the back door.
