One of the highlights of Homecoming week is Thursday night when the student body gathers to watch the burning of the traditional bonfire, constructed by the Senior guys. Each year the Student Council sells chances, according to class, for the right to toss the dummy into the flames. The Senior class bought the most chances, thus earning this privilege. In the past, the announcement of the Homecoming queen was saved until halftime of the football game on Friday night. However, this custom was broken in 1981 when the queen was presented to the student body at a formal coronation ceremony on the first day of Homecoming week. This enabled her to reign over all Homecoming activities. This year’s court included: Freshman attendant, Tonya Helt; Sophomore attendant, Tonnie DeFreitas; Junior attendant, Shelly Brown; and Senior candidates, Leigh Ann Dowell and Sherry Peters. The 1981 Homecoming Queen was Lisa Inman. She was crowned by Student body president Robin See and was also presented at halftime of the Homecoming football game. The new formal coronation was well received by the student body and is expected to become another tradition at SV. (Top) A back view of the 1981 winner of float competition — SENIORS!!
