These staff- ers brought back ideas to the rest of the group and soon everyone was fired up, ready to work on a unique design for this year's book. With the idea for the theme settled, the job for the remainder of the year was to make sure GSGL made it to the printer. A lot of hard work had to be done to finance the book — selling advertisements to area business- men, selling the books, and having the dance at the Winegarden — all this was in addition to actually creating the book. Under the direction of the sponsor, Mrs. Joyce Bon- ness and editor Todd Fliss, the staff of sixteen year- bookies worked diligently to finish the layouts, write the copy, and snap those perfect pictures. It required the sincere effort of each dedicated staff- er to complete every necessary task. (Top Lett) Junior Sandy Bash worked many hours on the Senior Section. Old Gold And Black 83 Keepin’ The Presses Rolling The staff of The Wildcat seemed to be forever on the go, trying to capture each exciting moment of life at South Vermillion. As soon as one paper had made it to press, stories for the next edition were assigned to the reporters. The staff was responsible for the writing of the stories, typing, proofing, cor- recting the copy, and laying out the pages, in addi- tion to financing their entire operation. The money to pay for the newspaper was obtained through the selling of advertisements and by selling the ac- tual newspapers. The executive staff consisted of the co-editors, Lisa Mosele and Donna Bonomo, and the page editors. The rest of the hard working staff was made up of reporters, artists and photographers. The whole ef- fort was co-ordinated and supervised by Mrs. Mari- lyn Hawkins, their advisor. Besides producing two papers per month and the special Christmas and Senior editions, the staff also found the time to sponsor the Sweetheart Dance in February. The Wildcat 85 Band Captured Many Honors The 1979-1980 South Vermillion High School March- ing Band was really a group to be proud of. The talented individuals won many honors for the school as well as for themselves. In the fall the Marching Wildcats traveled to contest at East Columbus High School where they captured five of the nine tro- phies, including the coveted Sweepstakes trophy. The Stage Band worked hard to bring recognition to South Vermillion also. After many hours of re- hearsal the group was ready for their contest. The contest was held at DePauw University, and the band was awarded a first in their division. In addition to practicing for the contests, the band marched in the area parades and the ISU Home- coming Parade. The 'Cats were invited to perform at Rose Hulman which was quite an honor. The band also provided entertainment at the half-time shows at the football and basketball games and the pep sessions. (Top Loft) Freshman Tony Klyaic kept an eye on the music. Marching Wildcats 87 88 Coquettes Half-Time Crowd Pleasers The 1979-1980 Coquettes suffered through many aggravating experiences at the Fred J. Miller Camp last summer. Sore muscles, blisters, and sunburns caused much discomfort but the benefits of the newly acquired knowledge of original routines made it all seem worthwhile. The Coquettes also received assistance with new ideas from Kevin Mur- phy and Roseann Foredori, two ISU students who were former members of similar troupes. All this ef- fort resulted in the highly professional and entertain- ing performances that the Coquettes gave throughout the year. The Coquettes marched in several area parades in addition to their performances at the football and basketball games. They helped at the annual rock- a-thon at the Vermillion Convalescent Center. Upon accompanying the band to the East Colum- bus Band Contest, the Coquettes were awarded a trophy for Best Auxiliary in their division. Lisa Mosele was Captain for the Coquettes and Diana Beard served as assistant-captain. (Top Left) Cathy Jackson and Gina Graham put many hours into hard practice. Coquettes 89 Feature Twirler 91 Cheesewright Twirled For ’Cats Every band needs a feature twirler, and for the past three years Kristy Cheesewright has held that position with the Marching Wildcats. Kristy, who was taught how to twirl the baton by her mother, has been in twirling competitions since the age of three. Although she does not compete individually now, she still competed for the school. Kristy performed with the band at contests, in pa- rades, and for half-time shows for sporting events. She didn't have a set routine for each song, but she had different individual parts of routines that she combined during any specific performance. Thus, she was able to flow with the music, ad libbing whenever it was necessary. Changing the beat of the music, trying on a new costume, and adding different elements of various dance and acrobatic steps, made each performance unique. Sixth hour was set aside as practice time during the fall and winter months. The hours spent in rehearsal were well worth it though, as she was awarded the trophy for Best Auxiliary at the East Columbus Band Contest. (Top Lett) Kristy was multi-talented, participating in basketball also. (Right) Many of Kristy's outfits were designed by her mother. Students Learned Responsibility Many honors were bestowed on various students throughout the year. On the night of April 23, twen- ty-three juniors and four seniors were inducted into the South Vermillion High School chapter of National Honor Society. Miss Christine Mason, sponsor, was pleased to have so many students qualify under such stringent requirements. On Honors Night, May 14, many students were re- warded for their accomplishments in their endeav- ors. Several scholarships were presented to grateful college-bound seniors, and John Alabaugh and Mary Davis were chosen as Outstanding Freshman Boy and Girl, respectively. Another aspect of student activity which deserved recognition was the Student Council. Student Body President Kurt Jones and the representatives from each class worked with their advisors, Miss Elizabeth Dowdy and Mr. Ernest Boatman, to improve the quality of student life at South Vermillion. The leaders of the senior class guided their fellow seniors through a successful Homecoming week, winning the float competition and the Spirit Trophy! They were also instrumental in the planning of the graduation ceremonies. (Top Loft) Micci Ferrare, a member of both NHS and Student Council. Student Body President, Student Leadership 93 Drama Production Staged The March 27 and 28 performances of You Can't Take It With You marked the second high school drama production to be staged in the new audito- rium. The success of the play was due to the dedi- cation of the directors, Mrs. Joyce Bonness and Micci Ferrare, and the tremendous effort put forth by the cast. Many hours of practice were required to learn the lines and perfect the mannerisms of each character. As the stage makeup was applied and the customes were adorned, the familiar faces were transformed into that of the strange ac- quaintances of the Vanderhof family. Ms. Rebecca Grant's art classes and Mr. Steven Pasko's shop classes contributed to the play by combining their talents in the creation of the set of the Vanderhof living room. Although the South Ver- million version of the play didn't make it to Broad- way, it provided an entertaining treat for area resi- dents and students and thus met its goal. You Can't Take It With You 95 First Musical Production Staged Godspell, as conceived by John Michael Tebelak, was the first musical to be held at South Vermillion. It required the co-ordinated effort of the cast; the crew, which consisted of stage, costume, makeup, props, lighting and sound, and carpentry divisions; the stage managers; and the musicians to success- fully complete the production. Director Dr. Thomas Garrison and his assistant Miss Elaine Gambaiani headed the group and were greatly responsible for the success of the production. Godspell was a celebration of the gospel as told by St. Matthew. The purpose of the musical was to portray Jesus Christ teaching love and joy to His children, but it also was entertaining as many tal- ented vocalists were heard. The set dipicted a playground scene, featuring a chainlink fence, a see-saw and trash strewn about the ground. The costumes consisted of ordinary street clothes applied in an extreme manner which created a dynamic impression. (Top Left) Director Dr. Thomas Garrison and chorus guitar player Mike McLeish rehearsed the music. (Right) Stephen portrayed the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On December 15 the Student Council sponsored the annual Christ- mas Dance. The theme for the occasion was Boo- gie Wonderland, and that it was as the dancers got down to the beat of Zoot. Near the end of the evening, student council representative Kristy Cheesewright announced that senior Vic Vandivier had been selected King of the dance. By February, the need for another big event was evident. The Wildcat Staff came to the rescue, as they sponsored the second Sweetheart Dance to be held at South Vermillion. They chose the theme from Casablanca and decorated the foyer ac- cordingly. The Bob Lane Blues Band provided the tunes, which seemed to please everyone as they danced the night away. Junior Lori Farrington and Freshman Brian McLeish were chosen as the royalty for the evening. (Top Left) Holly Redman and Brian Latinovich snuggled during a break at the Sweetheart Dance. Christmas Dance — Sweetheart Dance 99 100 Prom A Night To Be Remembered The long awaited Junior-Senior Prom took place at the Rose Hulman Union Building on the evening of May 9. Looking Through The Eyes of Love was the theme chosen by the prom committee. Shades of blue and silver decorated the floor where couples danced to the music of Rage. Midway through the evening. Junior Brad Harper announced Lori Jenkins had been chosen Prom Queen. The court of prin- cesses included Micci Ferrare, Andrea Dibble, Diana Beard, Debbie Volk, and Mary Burris. After switching to less formal clothes, everyone came to the Caberet. The parents of some of the junior class members were on hand to feed the hungry clan. South Vermillion's own cinema, other- wise known as the family living center, presented a double feature — “Blazing Saddles and Animal House . The excitement of a disco was not far away, however, as The Works were providing music in the foyer. (Top Loft) Junior Class President Brad Harper coronated Lori Jen- kins. Prom 101 Convocations Broke The Routine The Student Council's presentation of two convos provided a welcome escape from the usual daily routine for students and faculty members, as well as money to finance the council's many projects. The Two Martians performed an interesting spoof, simi- lar to a Mork from Ork, and another talented individ- ual entertained the student body with his musical and poetic talents. In December, Mrs. Joyce Bonness's first semester drama class performed a winter convo. Several Carol Burnett skits were staged including Hertz Rent-A-Car featuring Kim Stewart and Joni Web- ster, and “Old Folks featuring Debbie Volk and Joe Everhart. The convocation which seemed to steal the scene was a freebie by the Air Force Band. The group which originated from Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois had the student body jamming to the tunes ot Tyme. The electrifying sounds of the female vocalist sounded much like that of the rock group Blondie . Mr. Jerry Hawkins, counselor, was responsible for ar- ranging for the group to perform here. (Top Left) The female lead-vocalist for the Air Force band capti- vated the attention of the audience. (Middle) Accompanied by the female vocalist, the bass guitar player picked the cords with accuracy. (Right) Engulfed by his equipment, the drummer kept the beat of the rock music played by the Chanute Air Force Band. Convocations 103 Whether they were raising money for camp at a bakesale, practic- ing after school, or hanging post- ers to raise spirit, the yelieaders were always working hard to raise school spirit. All of the girls worked hard to help spread Wild- cat spirit and pride. The job was not an easy one, however, as teams saw disappointing seasons and the crowds began to lose their enthusiam. Each girl tried to incorporate new ideas to gain that spirit and sup- port for the teams. Pep sessions were planned to include maxi- mum student participation (re- member the pyramids and class competition?!!!), posters were made and vocal cords frazzled in constantly reminding everyone that We are the mighty Wild- cats!” 106 Cheerleaders Wrestlerettes Traci Amerman, Kathy Kovarik, and Denise Payton. (Second row) Lisa Mosele. Sheila Beard. Mrs. Patrice Leibler. Becky Lightfoot. and Mrs. Libbie Conner. Not pictured is Mrs. Glenna Gibbs. Perhaps the most significant step to improved school spirit was the formation of the SVHS Spirit Board. Its purpose was to improve the relations between the cheer- leaders, band and coquettes. This was a successful effort to raise school spirit. The Board was represented by selected cheer- leaders, a coquette, and some officers from the band. Varsity (First row) Pam Porter, Sherry Peters, Geralyn Montecillo. (Second row) Micci Ferrare, Bobbi Gallatin, and Tracey Rodich. Freshman Dana Dowell, Debbi Marietta, Crystal Dalton, and Renea Burnett. Who could be seen on the side- lines, in the crowd, or at the ath- letes' sides, cheering them on? Why, it was the Wildcat mascot, the newest addition to rowdi- ness at SVHSM The decision of who would don the furry duds was a difficult one for the selec- tion committee. Applicants ex- pressed strong desires to “fire up the crowds and do his or her best to spark spirit. The final se- lection was that of Senior, Kurt Jones, and Sophomore, Joe Ever- heart. They both worked hard to get the spirit movin' by cheering, doing cartwheels, and even go- ing directly into the crowds, to get them excited about the games. Their enthusiam was the finishing touch to many games and pep sessions as fans, not only from SVHS but other schools as well, enjoyed their antics and their vitality during the games. The outfit worn by the mascots was designed by Mari Trimble, a junior, who created an outfit that far surpassed those worn by other school's mascots. (First row) Dave Davis, Brian Davis, Mickey Wright, (Second row) Mike Adcox, Jerry Wollam, Steve Yelich, Mark Ditz, and Coach Dan Harris. 110 Cross Country The long stretches of grass and gravel, after-the-meet Kool-Aid , and the good ole' honey jar were just a few of a long list of memories for the 1979 Cross Country Team. During the strenu- ous practices each boy became used to the different dips and curves on their course. Each boy's goal was to master this course and each in his own way did just that. After the meets, the team became accustomed to the re- freshing Kool-Aid that parents brought. Jerry Wollam and his honey jar al- ways provided a sweet note to the meets-even though Coach Dan Harris didn't get into it ! There were many close meets, five of which were victories for the Wildcat team. Caoch Dan Harris noted that, I considered the season a success be- cause it was so much better than what we had done in the past. The unity of the team was one of the main ingre- dients to their successful season. This unity enabled the aggressive team to capture the WIC cham- pionship. In addition to the title, the Wildcats swamped places on the WIC all-conference football team. This WIC honor team had 24 positions — 7 of those were awarded to SVHS players. Includ- ed in the awards were Kurt Jones, Dale Pritchard, Matt Kelley, Vic Vandivier, Paul Fenoglio, Kevin Marietta, Dave Walker, and Tony Major. Vic Vandivier was also dis- tinguished as the Player of the Year. Another of the memora- ble moments of the year was the team's ability to win the first South Vermillion victory on the new football field. They defeated the Sullivan Arrows for a whopping Homecoming victory of 34-7. The 1979 Freshman Football Team had a highly successful year as they completed their season with a 7 win to only 1 loss record. Playing against teams that were strong competitors, the Frosh team made quite a showing of skill, teamwork and aggression as they were clearly the best area Freshman team. The team's only loss of the season was also their last game. This loss to the Brazil Red Devils was disheartening but the final record made up for this. The fine team showed fine work and the attitude of the boys themselves showed very good sportsmanship. Football 115 umpin’ In — Feet First! Mark Davis, a sophomore, was the shining star of the swim team when he not only placed well in all of the meets, but con- tinued to state competition. Mark may not have made it into the top 12, but the chance he made for himself and SVHS was a very proud one. Mark has always en- joyed swimming and feels that the sport not only keeps one in shape physically, but mentally as well. Knowing that I have to train hard and then knowing that I can win makes me feel good about myself, says Mark. I hope to continue to work even harder and maybe even win a scholar- ship to Indiana University. Kathy Kovarik. Each boy im- proved his skills and tried to catch some winning fever. This fever also caught on with parents and fans who supported the team. Who could forget the many cans of good, cold, and well-deserved Mountain Dew or the hit the spot candy bars (especially Snickers, right, coach?!!) which many parents supplied after each tennis match? The 5-7 season of the Wildcat team proved that hard work paid off. The season was also highlight- ed by the aggressive sectional action. 118 Tennis Chuck Ditto, Mike Volk. Jim Blackford. As the girls “bumped , “set , and “spiked through the season, names such as “Leroy , “Spaz , “Stretch , and “Space were heard shout- ing encouragement, praise, and sometimes critisism — all in the name of volleyball. The teams both fell short of victories on the court but achieved a deep sense of friendship among the girls. This friendship wasn't only felt at matches but months after the season had ended as well. Coach Dan Harris also received an award when his team defeated his alma mat- er, West Vigo, not only in heads- up competition but in the WIC and the Sullivan Relays. The girl's track team was vastly improved this year, enabling them to place much closer to the teams which had beat them badly in the previous year. The times and distances of the girls improved greatly also. Although they finished fifth, the girls scored well in the WIC. The Conference competition proved to be a tight meet in which there were only seven points out of second place. Seven of the female tracksters competed in the sec- tionals, where South Vermillion tied for sixth place out of the eighteen teams. Kim 33 Index 173 Cindy Zucca Cindy Zucca was a familiar face around the journalism room at SVHS. Almost every morning she could be seen talking to her friend Diane Moore, next year's “Wildcat editor. In fact, Cindy had asked if she could be a typist for the Wildcat next year, and she was looking forward to being on staff. We think that that is what should be remem- bered about Cindy; that she looked forward. Even though she had been diagonosed as having cystic fibrosis when she was an infant, Cindy led as normal a life as she could. She came to school up until two weeks before she died, she held down a job at the Dairy Queen, and next year she was going to be a co-op student. When we think about the obstacles that Cindy faced and overcame every day she lived, it should make our day to day gripes, petty annoyances, and complaints about boredom seem unimportant, and make us appreciate our lives all the more. — Those who knew Cindy will miss her. Mrs. Marilyn Hawkins Advisor, “Wildcat Jim Chubrilo Although Jimbo Chubrilo is lingering between a life just past and a life still unknown, his place in our hearts is, and always will be permanent. He had many of friends, and each of us, will miss Jimbo in the different ways he brought joy to our lives. His smile, charm, and easy going ways made him the leader he was. Jimbo was admired and deeply re- spected by his peers, and his passing will leave an empty void full of good times and bad times, of dreams unfulfilled and goals reached. Jimbo lived from moment to moment and although he didn't expect more, it was certain to be given almost always. He will continue to live in this way within our hearts and almost always, we will push ourselves to live our lives to the fullest as Jimbo would want us to. We will all miss Jimbo and his memory is the only sanity the world can now assure us.
