All through the term the stall' had a growing appreciation ol' the problems ol' compressing dear old S.l'.H.S. into still' covers. lt is a job that we found was big and. as the months raced bv, grew constantly bigger. And the standards had to be kept up to perlection, or our boss man. Nlr. Clupelli, would explode wrath. Arranging interminable schedules for pic- tures . . . announcing cancellations caused by lall rains and winter snows . . . planning rc- Charles Bednar, Mr. Cupelli, and Catherine Solesky discuss pictures for use in the Yearbook. takes when some exhuberant boy reached for his shoelace just as the shutter clicked . . . track- ing down seniors who kept dodging the camera . . . choosing the perfect cover material . . . typing names and names and names . . . select- ing photos and thinking something bright to say about them . . . convincing relatives, friends. and even strangers that they should buy more than one copy . . . reading prool till the commas began to waltz with the periods - these are some ol' the things that became a part of our lives. But the storm was weathered. and thanks to lots ol good will from everyone. the book was sent to the printer. This duo worked hand in hand on the Cantata for several years. Mrs. Howard was added to their staff a few years later. XVhen Hr. Brown and Mrs. Hochstetler departed from South Union, the work fell into the capable hands of Paul S. Deein and Irene D. Howard. Since then Mr. Deem has left us and now his work has been taken over by Xlr. A aines Crossland. This year the Cantata was called In Bethlehem, by Richard Ixountz. The story brought to mind the scene of the first Christlnas in a setting of tableaux and song. THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS An event of South Union High School that is eagerly awaited by all is the annual minstrel, and this year's annual school minstrel was considered by many of the well-known critics as one of the best ever produced. The minstrel is spon- sored by the Industrial Arts Department to raise money for use in the operation of the shop, and it is under the direction of Mr. John Cairns and Mrs. Irene D. Howard. Any sophomore, junior,and senior may participate in this production. No distinction is made in regards to talent. In this manner South Union High School gives every student an opportunity to participate in at least one extra- curricular activity a year. The students work diligently to attain the finished. artistic product that has bubbling spontaneity, injected adalibbing, and whole- some enjoyment for both the audience and the participants. Credit must also be given to the stage-hands who worked tirelessly behind the curtain. Not often can such a production be as successful in this sophisticated day and age as the minstrel was this year. Many thanks go out to all those who helped in any way to make this show a success. Playing at all basketball and liootball pep nleet- ings, it helped raise the spirits ol' the teams and students. During the year, the band participated in many parades at dillerent cities. YVe stand with respect as we watch the approach of our national and school flags. They wave as if blown by the breeze of freedom, yet their strength stands majestic as a symbol of our hopes. After our flags have been respectfully presented, we eagerly await our charming majorettes. The girls work as a fine marching unit to present a per- formance of fancy twirling and high stepping that has made the majorettes such an outstanding feature of the S,U.H.S. Band. SQUARE DANCE CLUB The South Union Square Dance Club, originated by the Sophomore Class and organized in january. ollers additional activities at South Union High. The purpose is to promote noon-day recreation lor square dance fans and to hold monthly social meetings. The first was a pre-Lenten square dance in February. For the March meeting, the club supported the P.T..X. dance in the gym. The April meeting, a covered dish dinner held in the caleteria and lol- lowed by a dance in the gym. was very successful. ln May, the club members en' joyed a weiner roast at the mountain cottage ol Mrs. Hughes. Sharpnack and his orchestra. The floor show entertainment was provided by members of the club. XVith a tough 19-game schedule facing his team, Coach Fagler did not lose any time in getting his team ready. XVith four regulars from last year's Blue Devil champion team, Bierer, Culbreth, Fudella, and Davis, plus Lee Bero drop- ping in points, and assisted by Luther Kenney, we copped 111 of l9 games. Our basketball team ended the '49-'50 season in second place in the lV.P.l.A.l.. Sec- tion X. lVe emerged with 12 league wins, and two defeats. Both losses were to Uniontown High School.
