WE ' RE NUMBER ONE! The South Stanly Rebels presented all Southerners with a championship season during ' 65- T 66. The Rebels roared through the conference schedule without defeat, running up huge margins along the way. This record qualified South for 2-A play- off action in District III. The first play- off game, with Mt. Holly, ended in a tie; then South was awarded the game on the basis of more earned yardage. In the state championship game with Siler City, the Rebels were outclassed for the first and only time of 1965. The final score was 25-6. Even in defeat, however, South Stanly displayed the gamemanship and sportsman- ship that made them one of the most outstanding teams in S.S.H.S. history. 6

ATHLETICS 66 This was the year of football championship, and basketball too. Red Mabry came up through the middle in the fall, and June Wallace fired from the mound in the spring. Peggy Satterfield hooked ' em in girls ' basketball, while Tony Lowder made records on the boys ' team. Those who participated in varsity athletics remember ' 66 as the year of aching muscles, and pounding heart. . .of cheers in victory, and support in defeat. . .of the last quarter, the final lap, the bottom of the ninth. This was ' 66 in athletics.
