THE SOUTHERNER South Stanly High School Norwood, North Carolina Sharon Thompson, Editor Jean Hathcock, Associate Editor Jimmy Russell, Business Manager WiscAssETT Memorial V K o a 1 • s v i Oi Mi LIBRARY FOREWORD Time is relative, it is said. Time that drags by so slowly in an afternoon class may race away in an exciting basketball game, or simply cease to exist for a few magical hours at a Junior-Senior Prom. Whether it moves rapidly or slowly, one th ing is constant about time — it passes. And once it has passed, like a wave rolling back from the beach, only memories remain. The staff of the ' 66 Southerner hopes . with pictures and words, to recall for you the times past and the events which came with those times; to bring memories to mind like fireworks against a summer sky. If this is accomplished our work has truly been a pleasure. TABLE OF CONTENTS L I B R A R Y Because of her originality, boundless energy, and unlimited enthusiasm . . . Because of her untiring encouragement and faithfulness as our sponsor in the publication of this yearbook . . . Because of her sincerity of interest in teaching and in life itself . . . We, the annual staff, proudly dedicate the 1966 SOUTHERNER ATHLETICS 66 This was the year of football championship, and basketball too. Red Mabry came up through the middle in the fall, and June Wallace fired from the mound in the spring. Peggy Satterfield hooked ' em in girls ' basketball, while Tony Lowder made records on the boys ' team. Those who participated in varsity athletics remember ' 66 as the year of aching muscles, and pounding heart. . .of cheers in victory, and support in defeat. . .of the last quarter, the final lap, the bottom of the ninth. This was ' 66 in athletics. WE ' RE NUMBER ONE! The South Stanly Rebels presented all Southerners with a championship season during ' 65- T 66. The Rebels roared through the conference schedule without defeat, running up huge margins along the way. This record qualified South for 2-A play- off action in District III. The first play- off game, with Mt. Holly, ended in a tie; then South was awarded the game on the basis of more earned yardage. In the state championship game with Siler City, the Rebels were outclassed for the first and only time of 1965. The final score was 25-6. Even in defeat, however, South Stanly displayed the gamemanship and sportsman- ship that made them one of the most outstanding teams in S.S.H.S. history. 6 SOUTH STANLY REBELS Coaches: L. Young (summer camp), W. Moore, H. Brooks, G. Poplin. The football team wishes to express its appreciation to the men who made it possible for the ' 6 Rebels to have a successful season. Although we may have despised them on the practi ce field, we know how much they did for us. The Rebels 7 SENIORS Standing: Steve Culp, Paul Weathersbee, Roy Little, Steve Lisenby, Johnny Holt, Ronald Woodall, Danny David Mabry, June Wallace. Kneeling: Donald Woodall, Bowers. Standing: Tommy Norwood, Danny Massey, Gordon Lampley, Garland Ussery, Sherrill Hasty The South Stanly Golf team is a recent addition to athletics at South. Last year several practice matches were played. This year plans were being made for some actual record con- tests. Matches at home are play- ed at Piney Point Golf Club. 14 TRACK AND FIELD South Stanly holds an enviable record in the second spring sport, Track and Field. In four years of competition Southern teams have amassed two round robin championships and one conference champion- ship. The overall record up to the 1966 season was twenty-three wins, seven losses. An individual sport, Track and Field boasts several conference record. Tony Lowder, for example, held the ' 64- ' 65 discus record with a 122 ' 11 3 4 hurl. Ronnie Gordon, Charles Huneycutt, Ronnie Farmer, Ronnie Woodall, Leslie Hamilton; Johnny Holt, Joe Biggers, Eddie Burleson, Joe Faulkner, Darrell Kimrey; Paul Weathersbee, Harry Poplin, Tommy Hatley, Steve Lee, Steve Gragg, manager; Bobby Ussery, Gary Bowers, Jack Bullock, David Holt, Emory Kimrey, and Byron Colson. INTRAMURALS And Mrs. Amos ' girls battle away on the volleyball court. For the clubs and organ- izations of South Stanly, ' 66 was the year of activity. Student Council sponsored a Goodwill Industries drive and a paper drive, in addition to multiple varied activities in school. Honor Society enter- tained first semester honor students with a candlelight tea. F.H.A. had Christmas projects, and home projects, and Red Rose Girls. Projects, conventions, par ties, ser- vices. . . .each club and or- ganization spent the year in activity. And each club and organ- ization fulfilled a need at South; they served the school purpose — education for cit- izenship — by giving students opportunities to serve and participate. CLUBS 17 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council must be the backbone of the school self-government. Members of this group must be alert to needs of the student body and be willing to work to see that those needs are met. Projects such as the Goodwill bags for the handicapped are undertaken annually, in addition to many projects for the school. Officers 18 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Senior Members: Sally Cameron, Shelia West, Nancy Dean, Carol Hartsell, Steve Laton, Judy Hudson, Shelia Luther, Cecille Moose, Larry Lefler ANNUAL STAFF RED CROSS REPRESENTATIVES 20 The newspaper staff .prima- rily composed of journalism stu- dents, published the ' 66 editions of The Rebel Rouser. Nancy Dean was editor and Jimmy Avett was business man- ager. Miss Ball advised, consoled, reprimanded, and ur- ged onward. Perhaps the highlight of the year for the staff was the campaign that they undertook to change the policy of ordering class rings. As a direct result of the newspaper ' s stand the school ring policy was amended. F. H. A. Future Homemakers of America — for many South Stanly girls these words awake pleasant memories. What were the highlights of ' 66 for F.H. A. members ? I enjoyed the skit on morals , says one. The Miss South Stanly Pageant! says another. The stage decor- ations, the excitement, the talent — I won ' t forget those. I remember how hard I worked to get my chapter degree, muses another. Being a Red Rose girl of the month, smiles another, that was my most pleasant memory. 22 F. F. A. The highlights of the year for F.F.A. members were many. They attended the state fair in Raleigh, treated themselves and guests to a weiner roast, participated in tool, soils, swine, beef cattle and dairy cattle contests. The members look forward to summer camp at White Lake. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA MONOGRAM CLUB BUS DRIVERS LIBRARY ASSISTANTS 27 In addition to classroom work in music theory, the two sections of chorus are responsible for much entertainment during the year. Chapel programs, Christmas, program, spring musical . . . .it took work, and time, and energy. Accompanist: Vickie Newsome 28 CHORUS 29 SOUTH STANLY MARCHING BAND It wouldn ' t be a ball game without the band, seems to be the consensus of the South fans. Indeed, the band does contribute much to the color and excite- ment of football. The Marching Rebels also perform at many other functions, and engage in various activities. Under the direction of Mr. Sides, the band studies and practices during the year in order to become not only good, but outstanding. Sandra Hurt Jean Hathcock Jane Hayman Shelia Luther Susie Little-Chief Majorette This year the majorettes added a special highlight to the football game half-time shows. They held a summer baton clinic to raise money for their new tops. To add new spice to their routines, they twirled with fire at the the West-South game and at the North-South game. They also spent many hours after school practicing for Friday Night ! S- Brenda Mabry O- Sharon Thompson U- Gail Herring T- Betty Ann Shankle H- Susan Nix LETTERGIRLS The Lettergirls also helped with the summer baton clinic. With the money they purchased sleeveless tops with their particular letter on front. To add a frill to their performance they bought pom poms. These made their routines even more enjoyable. Drum Majorette - Elaine Efird CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders must be remarkable people. They must perform like acrobats, yet remain looking feminine and dainty. They must keep yelling enthusiastically whether we ' re twenty points ahead. . .or twenty points behind. They must be there, rain or shine, snow or sun, test tomorrow or not. Students blame them when the student body is apathetic, and ignore them when it isn ' t. Truly a cheerleader is somebody special. Chief Cheerleader: Joanne McSwain 33 JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Ginger Lampley, Marilny Isenhower, Judy Clark, Marlene Dennis, Karen Rummage, Chief; Sandra Burris, Jane Lee, Deborah Carpenter, Myra Bullock. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS FEATURES The Southerner now focuses the annual spotlight as some members of our student body who have achieved some title or position step center stage. Here we feature our queens — those girls who have been selected to wear a crown of honor for their beauty, grace, and charm. Also featured are the Senior Superlatives because the annual staff feels that these individuals also have been awarded an honor in being selected by the members of their class as superlatives — the highest degree of comparison. 35 MISS SOUTH STANLY Susie Little MISS HI MISS JO ANN McSWAIN MISS D.A.R. In one aspect, however, it was much like every other year. The students were in classes and each class had a personality. The freshmen were verdent, shy, qullible, and usually lost. The sopho- mores were excitable, ener- getic and estatic. The juniors were jolly, loguatious, candid and apathetic. The seniors were critical, skeptical, ego- tistical and anxious to grad- uate. Each class thought their class had more ability, more talent, more everything than any other class in school. And each class thought next year would be even better. He was lost and sometimes he was lonely. He had a lot to learn — like how to get from agricul- ture to gym in three minutes and live to tell it. . .or that seniors don ' t have lunch- room line break privileges. . .or which teachers get violent over chewing gum. He knew a lot, too. He knew where to sit in the auditorium, and how to stack a locker, and most importantly, he knew who he was-nobody. He was the bottom step-the lowest man on the pole. The junior worked diligently — taking PSAT, or learning the Gettysburg Address, or struggling with Emerson ' s essays. And the junior relaxed diligently — dancing at the Junior-Senior Prom, cheering at the ball games, goofing off during study hall. The junior wanted ' 66 to end because he wanted ' 67 to begin. He was only one step from the top — and the junior year was only the scr image for the big game or the rehersal for opening night. Someday in the future as you work or study somewhere else, what thoughts, then, will come to mind about the days you spent at South? Say, Senior, what will you remem- ber? I ' ll remember being a part of the best football team in the South. I ' ll remember the day we got our class rings. I ' ve got to remember-I can ' t forget. I ' ll remember being in the most creative art class. I ' ll remember the short lunch line ! I ' ll remember living in the office for one whole year. I ' ll remember the bus accident. I ' ll remember the day Mr. Sides sprang a sneak pep rally. I ' ll remember ' winning the State 2-A runner-up trophy at Asheboro. I ' ll remember all the wonderful times I ' ve had in my senior year — ' both this year and next! I ' ll remember Mrs. Archer ' s swinging physics class. I don ' t want to remember anything, I ' m trying hard to forget. I ' ll remember the Mt. Holly football game. I ' ll remember giving my class ring to a girl just three days after we got them. I ' ll remember the cheer that goes — HAVE YOU GOT THE SPIRIT? I ' ll remember the day Steve Crump shouted AMEN in English we hadn ' t even prayed yet ! I ' ll remember the great snow blizzard in ' 66. I ' ll never forget that North Stanly basketball shot going in the South Stanly basket. I ' ll remember the day we voted for our mascots — those sweet little monsters who invaded our school. I ' ll remember when our girls played Sun Valley in basketball. I ' ll remember MacBeth! He was a cruel man, yes he was ! I ' ll remember the FIRST senior class meeting, green robes and red caps, no — was it blue robes and yellow caps? I ' ll remember our GREAT REBEL boys basketball team who went to the District play-offs in Winston-Salem ! Who put those chickens in Mr. Sides ' office. I remember that! Most of all I can ' t forget to remember NOTHING ! 79 SENIOR MASCOTS Lianne Lee, Mark Efird The Senior Class 1966 The one hundred-and sixteen senior who graduated in 1966 were the first class to graduate from South Stanly after four years attendance. Went to the library. . .the magazine I wanted was a summer issue. . .got a good biography . . .somebody was using the encyclopaedia I wanted. . .talked to the bunch. . .Mrs. Tetter said some new books were in and please be quiet. . .tried to sneak out a reference book, but the library assistants were all watching. . .paid an overdue. Saw a movie in biology. . .it was on energy. . .tomorrow we get out the frogs. . .mine last year was named Douglas. . .1 named him for my little brother. . .they looked alike. . .Let me borrow you notes. . .Went to Phys.Ed. . . .1 was late, too. . .Mrs. Amos wanted to know why. . .how do you explain that first intersection traffic jam. . .you have to experience it to believe it. . .what happened to my sneakers?. . .If we hurry we can get a coke before the break mob gets out here. . .too late. . .get behind Morton . . .he ' ll push his way through and we ' ll be safe. . .he waited outside of class for her. . .1 saw . .told you they hadn ' t broken up. . .time to go to class . . .save me a place at lunch. 88 And then we went to another class. . . I had a drawing of the week. . .1 had a good one, perfect, everything. . .it was in a dream. . .in art we cut out these little blocks of color. . .it was supposed to be an experience. . .June hoarded all the glue in his art box and nobo dy could have an experience with color. . .we talked about predestina- tion. . .we were supposed to be studying Delacrois ' use of color, but we talked about predestination. . .Wish I had taken art instead of this mechanical drawing. . .look!a91!. . .When will the bell ring. . .I ' m hungry. . .Is that the Navaho way? 89 I ' m just going through to get milk. .please don ' t put your elbow in the back of my neck like that. . .could I have four rolls and no slaw?. . .Don ' t sit at that table. . .she and I aren ' t speaking since she said what she did to me. . .then Daddy said that if I got a B in shorthand I could drive to school. . .fat chance. . .hurry, I have to see Nancy about the book she borrowed. . .Not the bell already. . .my pinto beans aren ' t even settled yet. . . hope I can stay awake. . .Did you get your homework. . .get him talking about something else so he ' ll forget the test. . .1 forgot my pencil. . . She said she ' d taste it later. . .1 think she threw it away. . .she can ' t. . .it ' s her job to taste it no matter how it looked. . .how can you tell if water is boiling?. . .Five to three and we still haven ' t washed the dishes. . .1 have to go all the way up to my locker before I can go to the bus. . .Let me ride with you. . .wait while I stop by the office a minute. . . How ' s everything Stop by and talk sometime; the door ' s always open. We may not be able to do anything, bu t we ' ll be glad to listen to what you have to say. . . .What took you so long?. . .Nothing. . .just stopped to talk for a second. . .hurry and we can beat the busses out yet. . .I ' m awfully tired. SOME LAST THOUGHTS Summer comes. The doors are locked, the blinds drawn even, the blackboards are washed and the lockers are cleared. Another school year ends and the water tower stands guard over an empty, silent building. The halls, deserted, stretch silently to closed glass doors. No chewing gum wrappers repose under the student lounge benches, no dirty socks hang from sprung lockers. Everyone has raced for the bus for the last time. . . this year. Next year lies just beyond the summer, and there ' s a lot of time ' till then. ' 66 ends. From the HOME SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION 108 East North Street Albemarle, North Carolina Compliments of The S M A R I 117 A FAREWELL TO GRADUATES If I had known you less I would not grieve Seeing the year its course has nearly run. I would be glad our task is almost done, Glad for the bit of rest we shall receive. It would not trouble me to see you leave; And, walking through the halls and classrooms where We meet so often now, their emptiness Would not oppress me when you are not there. It would not matter much; I would not care,— If I had known you less. But I have watched your minds and hearts grow strong, Pitted against the problems of the hour; And I have felt a deep, upwelling power, As, like a mighty wave, you surge along Into the future, where your lives belong, — The radiant future, where your dreams will grow And flower and fruit upon some distant shore. To watch your progress there I may not go, But I rejoice in prospect even so, Knowing the promise you have shown before, Certain of its fulfillment more and more. Lowell E. Noland 1 18 Rev.
