PAUL HIGH SCHOOL South St. Paul, Minnesota ft - What do you do in school? Often we hear that question. Well, this book is an attempt to answer that question. Here we shall attempt to summarize the activities, in and out of class, that high school people engage in - curricular, extra-curricular, and non- curricular. We'll use some words and a lot of pictures. We'll try to give the reader a kind of conducted tour of the school. We hope that for outsiders, this book will be a revelation of the thousand- and-one things that go to make up the life of our high school community. For the student readers, we hope that now and in years to come the book will recall many pleasant memories. Kindness, friendliness, and cleverness are only a few of the many wonderful traits possessed by Mr. Allan Gower. His individuality is one of the main reasons he is so well-known and liked by the faculty and student body. Mr. Gower graduated from Hamline University in 1928, where he took a leading part in turning out the school paper. After graduation, he had the wonderful experience of teaching school for two years in Puerto Rico. The South St. Paul high school has had the privilege of having him as a member of its faculty for twenty-four years. Besides teaching senior English and joumalism, he is advisor to the school paper, the Hi Times, and to the Kaposia. His classes are enjoyed by all, for he possesses a sense of humor and knack which can make even the dullest English literature interesting to the students. He has also visited England, which fact enables him to relate many interesting facts about the country and its people. Mr. Gower is also coach of the South St. Paul high school tennis team. His hard work and determination have made tennis a prominent and successful sport of the school. The seniors are very proud to have chosen such an outstanding person to be their teacher of the year. Therefore we, the Class of '56, dedicate the Kaposia to Mr. Allan Gower. Here are the people who run the show. To the right are the members of the Board of Education. to whom. and to whose predecessors, we are in- debted for the fine school we have today. Below are Mr. Simley, who is chosen by ihe board io superiniend the af- fairs of the school system: and two people we are more closely acquainted wiih, Mr. Roiseland and Miss Williamson w ho have helped make our high school a place io be proud of Seated Ylamfmg Yin... E YD is ff , IN-f' N, V7 Debate Team, F5156 One of the big things we can be proud ot this year is our State Championship Debate team. And we can be prouder still when we recall that this is the third consecutive year that our team has won the highest honor in debate. Not only that, but this is our seventh championship. Quite a record! Above are the people who made this honor possible. Left to right they are David Madis. Sharon Schultz, Mr. R. J. Happe, the debate coach, Anita Pampusch, and Karen Seeger. Sharon and Karen have been members of the championship teams for the last three years. This year's championship was won in competition with seventeen other schools at Macal- ester College on February 18. Not only do these people function well as a team, but it you'll look near their pictures in the senior section you'll find that they are very active as individuals, too. Here in school we so frequently find that those who do the most do the best, and that's cer- tainly true here. So we are doubly proud of these people: first, for what they have accomplished in the field of debate, and second for their many other contributions to the school community. We hope the sophomores and juniors will take over where these seniors have left off, and carry on the school tradition of tops in debate! The Hi Times has brought to the students. the teachers, and to its other read- ers, all the interesting school happenings of the year. However, the staff does not de- serve all the credit. Mr. Allan Gower. faculty advisor ot this project, deserves a great deal ot praise for the work he has done. Joan Machart and Joy Grannis, editor and assistant editor, have also done a won- derful job in seeing that every member of the staff writes at least one article for each issue. Because Mr. Gower does not believe in all work and no play, he allowed the staff to hold a party in his home. Another highlight of the year was the tour to the Dispatch- Pioneer Press Building. Here the group saw every detail of producing a large paper. All members of the Hi Times Staff hope that the underclass- men will gain as much satis- faction and enjoyment out ot producing the paper next year as they did this year. and, Mr Ellsworth B Knutson came from Glenwood Mmnesota to dnrect the school band thxs year Under his guidance they have had a very successful year The band played at all of the home football games and bas ketball games Durmg the dtstrxct basketball tournament they had the pnvxlege of play mg at West St Paul for the South St Paul Red Wing game They entertamed the entxre school body during the annual band assembly on Jan uary 24 whxch the students consldered one of the best On March 19 the band wel comed Mr Adlax Stevenson who vxsnted the hxgh school durmg his campaxgn Omwww, Under the dxrechon of Mr. Ellsworth B Knutson, the school orchestra has had a very successful year. This is a familiar cry on any golf course and was the battle cry of the 1955 Packer golf team. The team, which was coached by Mr. Ken Flad- ager and led by seniors Henry Metcalf and Bob Rolle, com- piled a six - won four - lost record. To climax what Coach I-'ladager termed a mediocre season the linksters finished fifth in the Suburban Confer- ence and fourth in the District. The golf team was handicapped severely last spring by lack of practice facilities. Since South St. Paul shared Southview golf course with West St. Paul they were able to practice but two days a week. Other leading teams in the District and Con- ference, namely Red Wing, Anoka, and Stillwater, had ac- cess to a course every day of the week. We sometimes have special friends to meet between classes .... We gather around the Christmas tree after school. or maybe meet the one-and-only at her locker .... We admire Mr. Karn's hockey poster . . . or talk things over with Betty .... There are sometimes sad occasions when A. J. dishes out a pinkie for tardiness and we sufter the humiliation of handing it to teacher when we come to class late. du! mu' 45 JL-1, ya, fn. ,, I , S 440 fl HT!
