Mullins, Duane Johnson. Jones, George Herfel. Don Hall. The South Sioux City Cardinals opened their pre-school football practice on August 27. Forty varsity members reported for gear along with seventy sub-varsi- ty players. Two a day practice sessions were held until September 4, which was our first day of school. For the first game of the season the Cardinals traveled to Rlair to strike up a new relationship in football. The team came out victorious. The following week the Redbirds traveled to Plainview to mar the Pirates 21 game winning streak with a 20 — 20 tie. The Cardinals played their first home game against the Norfolk Panthers. The Cards led at the half 7 - 0 but the second half was a different ball game with Norfolk winning 12 — 7. Ilawarden was South Sioux City’s 1956 Homecoming victim. The Cardinals hung on to a one point lead to win the game. The FeMars Hulldogs were easy victims of the aggregation from South Sioux City. Everybody played fine ball and the coaches applauded it as a team victory. The next week the Cardinals traveled to meet the Feeds I.ancers on their Homecoming. The cards were upset by a score of 25— 12. The Cardinals showed too much for the Rlue Devils of Rayne. The backfield performed especially well. The Boys’ Town Reserves scored within the last 45 seconds of the game to defeat the Cardinals by a score of 14— 13. The last game of the season the South Sioux City Cardinals played hosts to the Rluejays of Pierce who were easily handed their second loss of the season. The whole Cardinal team was commented for a well played game.
