There along with representatives from the other high schools in the county, they learned the duties of the office to which they had been elected. Mr. Learing was this year's sponsor of County Government Day in South Sioux City, a job formerly done by Mrs. E. N. Swett. CYl tion l clucaticn TOeefe National Education Week was observed in South Sioux City with the local associa- tion sponsoring the weeks activities, No- vember 7—11. These activities included an open house held in all schools. Letters of invitation were sent to parents and members of the Chamber of Commerce inviting them to visit and inspect their schools. Mr. Floyd Parker, of Nebraska State Education Association, spoke to members of the Chamber in the afternoon and to the par- ents and interested people in the evening. His subject was School Building of Ne- braska.” The purpose of National Education Week and Education Business Day is to promote the idea that the school and town play a very important part in the development of children who will soon play a very important part in the development of a fast growing community. Student ro adeant er Nine juniors and seniors had an opportunity to gain actual broadcasting ex- perience by doing noon news- casts which originated from the offices of the Dakota County Star. Each student was responsible for getting and editing the news for his broadcast as well as an- nouncing it. Standing: R. Bartels, S. Peterson, K. Hirschbach, P. Louritsen, G. Sides, J. Dryden. Education Curriculum The program of studies is, of course, the most important although not always the most spectacular part of school life. At South Sioux City there are several major courses available to students. They are: college preparatory which prepares for college, commercial course which prepares for work in the business world, the fine arts course emphasizes training in music and speech, the general course provides a large variety of courses, industrial arts provides four years of shop work, and home economics gives the girl additional training in the important art of home-making. On the next six pages are some scenes typical of the scholastic life of South Sioux High School. The first two scenes were taken of the biology class, and the one at the bottom of the page was taken in the chemistry laboratory. Senior and sophomore Eng lish classes are shown at the top of the page. Mr. Foss aids Eddie Suter in solving a physics problem at the right, and at the bottom of the page pupils of the physics class set up an experiment. Mathematics, the foundation of all science, is represented here by a geometry class above and an algebra class below, while in the middle is Mr. Johnson and Don Aarnes considering a complicated logarithm problem. 5 oto onte t 1 st Prize Submitted by Martin Bielenburg and Don Aarnes Too many hands spoil the broth 2nd Prize Submitted by Marlene Luebben 3rd Prize Submitted by Judy Helt Son jo Souvain Duhhhhh!!!! THE SPORTSMAN'S PRAYER Dear Lord, in the battle that goes through life We ask but a field that is fair A chance that is equal for all in the strife. The courage to do and to dare. And if we should win, let it be by the code With our honor held high. And if we should lose, let us stand by the road And cheer as the winners go by. COACHES We are indeed fortunate here at South Sioux City in having men the caliber of Mr. Burnight, Mr. Bom- gaars, and Mr. Learing heading our athletic department. A coach’s life, to say the least, is not an easy one but a very im- portent one. As it should be the competitive spirit in interschool athletics is great. | It is up to the coach to obtain the best perfor- mance possible from each player. There is always the problem of hav- ing the team ready both mentally and physically for each contest. The coach is expected to build character, citizenship and sports- manship in every participant. I am pleased and proud of the job that our coaches have done and are doing. W. L. The lads were small in stature but large in desire and fight. ' The season's end saw them as a powerful team amassing wins over Hawarden, Leeds, Vermillion, Pierce, and tying a powerful unbeaten Wayne team. The season’s record was 4-4-1 and a first place tie in the Tri-State Conference. A few other statistics are: South Sioux out scored their opponents 146-126, had twenty- one letterwinners, three All-City players, and one All-State honorable mention berth. With sizes ranging from over 200 pounds to under 100 pounds, the job of getting in shape and working on fundamentals began. If determination and spirit were the only factors in winning ball games, this group of gridmen would have gone un- defeated. Their record of 0-5 does not in- dicate their desire and willingness to play the game and in the next few years of their high school career should be- come— Champions all the Way. South Sioux' future team! Watch it! Coach Learing , ■ -TV 1955-1956 BASKETBALL SUMMARY This basketball season proved to be the most successful in the past three years, mainly because of the whole squad’s intense desire to win. Every individual on the ball club played an instrumental part in racking up eight wins as against ten losses. The high point of the season was the Wisner game in which the Cardinals scored ninty-four points to set a South Sioux High School record. Of those ninty-four Bob Krumwiede contributed thirty-four and Rich Tinker thirty-two, their high scoring efforts for the year. During the season Lyle Archer was the field general of the ball club. In the District Tournament at Schuyler against Columbus he hit his season high of twenty points. Jim Melvin, Bill Cole, and Charlie Reed were probably the most consistent rebounders throughout the season. Merlyn Haase, Kenny Viers, Duane Garner, and Ronnie Bartels were the most capable reserves any ball club could desire. They could be counted on to go into a ball game and do just as well as one of the regular five. The loss of six senior lettermen, Krumwiede, Tinker, Archer, Melvin, Reed, and Viers will leave quite a vacancy. The four juniors who will be counted on to fill this vacancy are lettermen. Cole, Haase, Garner, Bartels, and members up from the “B” squad. Rich Berggren, the varsity’s manager, did a very capable job during the season. A young man must be able to run well to succeed in any phase of ath- letics. It furnishes athletic competition for any and all types of young men. By chance a young man could not succeed in running but could succeed in some field event. Track will improve the athlete’s indurance, co- ordination, agility, and speed. Cole — This is flying high. Student Council Many projects have been successfully sponsored by this year’s Student Council. Perhaps the most im- portant of these have been Church Emphasis Week, March of Safety, and Twirp Week. Other projects were the hot soup served to those who brought noon lunches, noon hour recreation, locker inspections, a sock hop, poster contests, decoration during Christmas holidays, an auction, a check room for valuables, and skits during pep rallies. The Student Council is made up of four seniors, four juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen. In ad- dition each home room has a representative who meets with the council occasionally to offer suggestions. This year’s student council sponsors are Miss Vlasak and Mr. Burling. In the circle Student Council officers place a poster for Church Emphasis Week. They are Ardith Potts, vice-president; Jim Melvin, president, and Judy Helt, secretary-treasurer. SENIOR CLASS Presents One ClOild The Senior Class Play, ‘‘One Wild Night,” a hilarious three-act comedy was presented on May 25 in the high school auditorium. The play concerned the plight of a young man who is con- vinced that he is an invalid although autcally he is in perfect health. When his rich aunt ar- rives, bringing with her a certain very pretty young woman, Rodney immediately has an attack of “vertigo,” and overhears a conversation which gives him the idea that he has only a short time to live. So he decides to do all the things he has always wanted to do—one of them being to send a well known criminal to prison. The plight that he finds himself in when he discovers he is perfectly healthy and has a long time to live is fantastic. The play was directed by Mrs. Bernard Bus- by.
