N. Swett. After thirty-four years of service to our South Sioux City public school system, “Prof” Swett is re- tiring from the superintendency which he so faithfully has served since 1921. Our hearts are sad as we remember how he has advised us, worried about us, and loved us; as we remember with what efficiency and courage he has guided the education of the youth of this community through periods of wars, depres- sion, and school expansion. We not only want, en masse, to thank him, but to add that although we are going to miss him, we will always re- spect and gratefully remember him, and we wish for him the best there is — nothing but the best! Jbout(i tSioux (2ihf Puf-rCia £cfiooC )Sj7— )Qjj The schools of this community ore now nearly one hundred years old. The first school house in this community was a log cabin in Covington. It stood on the present site of the Lewis and Clark Elementary School. Mary Pinkerton taught the first school in this log cabin in 1857. Later a frame building was built on the same site. In 1880 a brick building was built on this site. Additions to this building were built In 1924 end in 1952. The building is called the Lewis and Clark Elementary School after Captain Lewis and Captain Clark of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 1884 a brick building was built on the present site of the high school building. The first high school work of the South Sioux City Schools was done in this building. The first class graduated in 1894. It consisted of two people. Lulu Stamm and Isabel Mitchell. Lulu Stamm Eimers and Isabel Mitchell Hall are both deceased. No further classes completed high school work until 1897 when a class of four were graduated. They were Clint Manning, Susie Mitchell, Icy Knowlton and Ortie Brenneman. Later the high school was transferred to the old normal building which is now the junior high. This building was built in 1890 as a private normal school. After operating two years, the private school was closed. The building then stood idle for many years. From time to time, families lived in the old building. There are persons now living in South Sioux City who were born in this old building. In 1915, the old normal building was purchased by the South Sioux City school district. A high school was main- tained in this building until 1924 when the present high school building was built. When | came to the South Sioux City Schools In 1921, we hod 16 teachers and about 450 pupils. Now we have fifty teachers and approximately 1400 students. In the 1920 s the school population began increasing rapidly. This growth has never stopped. Due to the increased school population, the Board of Education asked the voters to approve a $175,000 bond is- sue to be used to build a high school building. The bond issue was approved by the voters in the fall of 1923. I remember well the evening that the news came out that the bond issue had carried. The church bells were rung and the high school students started parading on the streets. Later in the evening they came to my home. They sang songs and gave their school yells. They were overjoyed at the news. The next morning when I looked out on my back yard, my new picket fence was missing. The high school building was completed in December 1924, We moved in January 1925. The original bond issue on this building is now paid in full. The schools continued to grow even during the depression. In 1935 and 1936 the Bryan school was built and the junior high school was rebuilt. In 1951 a bond issue for $250,000 was approved by the voters. From this bond issue on addition was made to the Bryan school and one to the Lewis and Clark school. A shop addition was built on the high school building. Looking forward to further expansion of the school, the Board of Education purchased fourteen acres of land two blocks east of the present high school building. A new lighted athletic field has been constructed on this site. There is plenty of room left for school buildings. In 1952 occured one of the most disastrous floods in the history of the Missouri river. This flood caused $13,000 damage to the South Sioux City schools. The Federal Government and the State of Nebraska assumed $8,000 of this damage. The rest was borne by the school district. A high school has been maintained in South Sioux City for sixty-one years. During this time, hundreds hove grad- uated and are scattered over the United States in every state in the Union. Some are in foreign countries. Many have become leaders in numerous fields of endeavor. The schools have grown very rapidly since 1920. It would be interesting to know what will take place here in an- other thirty-five years. We con be certain that the schools will continue to grow and that South Sioux City will de- velop into a fine city. Our schools have come a long way from a log cabin to four modern brick buildings. We Seniors are saying goodbye.” For twelve years we’ve known the kind guidance and just discipline of Superintendent Swett. We simply and personally wish to thank him, from the depths of our hearts, for every- thing he has done for us. It has been a privilege to know him, and his ways. We regret leaving you, our classmates, yet we will always fondly recall such memor- able occasions as our plays, banquet, dances, prom, Baccalaureate, and Commencement, and we will rejoice with you in memory, as you, too, will know the happiness we have known at dear old South Sioux High. —14— JERALD H. We especially wish to thank the editor, Margaret Oehlerking, who contributed much of her time in organizing and producing “The 1955 Cardinal.” Margaret was ably assisted by a competent business staff con- sisting of Carolyn Orr, business manager, Wilma Bliven, Mary Crain, Kay Hirsehbach and Lois Lucore. Allen Beermann and George Powell did an excellent job of taking pictures for the annual. Last but not least, we thank Janet Johnson and Miriam Thacker for the many hours they spent in helping Margaret prepare the annual for the press. We are sure that you, the reader, join us in ex- pressing our appreciation for a job well done. Mr. Wight and Mr. Burling Co — sponsors —68— M. Thacker J. Johnson Copy Ed. Sectional Ed. Vondracek, director rubileatci This year the Jubilesta, an annual production of the Music Department, was dedicated to Mr. Swett, who is retiring as Superintendent of Schools after 34 years of faithful and loyal service. It was entitled This is Your Life, Mr. Swett”. With student body and faculty cooperation the theme was kept a secret from Mr. Swett until the last moment. Mrs. Swett and Miss Vondracek worked toget- her to produce an accurate living biography of Mr.Swett’s life. Following is a list of surprise visitors who were introduced as a part of the program. Wood CUPID IN PIGTAILS On April 29, in the high school auditorium, the Senior Class presented the three act farce, CUPID IN PIGTAILS, by Jay Tobias. The play depicted a typical American widow trying to de- cide between two suitors, with her twelve year old daughter constantly plotting against her. A happy climax was reached through the able assistance of THE MAD BUTCHER, and all tangles were straightened out. The play was a huge success. FRONT: G. Edwards, R. Tinker, J. Helt, J. County Government, sponsored by the American Legion of Nebraska, was or- ganized for the purpose of educating high school students in local government as well as in federal and state government. Mrs. E. N. Swett, Vice President of the State Board of Boys’ and Girls' coun- ty, has charge of the project in our school. Voting is emphasized as the most important point in County Government, as it is also one of the most important responsibilities of a United States citizen. Every student in high school voted on candidates in both a Primary and General Election. The elected candidates spent a day at the courthouse in Dakota City. They visited the offices to which they were elected and learned the duties and functions of these offices. —77— ouAe On November 12 South Sioux City Schools held Open House. That night the students’ parents visited the schools and attended the classrooms of their choice where the teachers explained the methods of teaching and the uses of that parti- cular subject. —78— 0 Happy Day!” A. Playing against such tough competition os East, Heelan, Lemars and Vermillion and lacking in height and experience, this year's Cardinal aggregation made a very creditable showing. High points during the season would have to include wins over East and Columbus and the loss to Heelan by 2 points in an overtime battle. Max Potts, the team's high scorer was an All—City and All —County choice, and Doug May, the other senior on the squad, was on the Second All - City team and also was an All - County choice. Potts scored 319 points during the season and May 231. Every member of the squad is to be congratulated for the part they played in making this year's season a success. —86- ,,CB z earn Ba ketbciU earn M. Haase, C. Dobney, G. Bierman, C. Cox, R.
