We watched the passing of one of the last great revolution- aries, Chairman Mao of China. We saw the hostilities in Northern Ireland flare and abate in continual struggle. We also witnessed the inevitable emergence of Third World OPEC nations with their increasing strength and importance. On the national scene, the American populace saw our government change hands for the 48th time, from a Republican grasp to one of a Democratic. With the Democratic victory in November, the nation seemed at last to move forward from the injuries of the Watergate scandal; and following President Carter's pardon of draft evaders, many felt that the scars of the Vietnam conflict were finally receding. Lastly, the United States was crippled by frozen winds and driving blizzards; it was the worst winter of this century, but it also enabled students to extend the weekends!
