Chosen to lead the class of 1961 in organizing the many activities during this all-important year are seated, left to right, Evilou North and Sheri DeYoung, mem- bers of the social council. Standing, left to right, are Bob Shine, social council chairman; Annette Plesniak, member of the social council; Ron Hege, vice-presi- dent; and Chris Parrott, president. The Class of 1 96 J Seeks the Challenge As freshmen we began to take an interest in new sub- jects while we struggled to grasp the elusive fundamentals of knowledge. For the next three years we strived to maintain the standards set by previous classes as well as to set our own. As sophomores we assumed responsibility by electing Chris Parrott, president; Evie North, vice-president; Sheri De- Young, secretary; Tom Duff, social council chairman; and Molly Dixon and Dennis McBroom, members of the social council. Our sponsors, Mrs. Mildred Luse, Mr. Alfred Hem- mer, and Mr. Leon Smith, helped us to produce, Tin Pan Alley. In 1959 we become juniors — upperclassmen at last. The class officers were again captained by Chris Parrott with Bob Shine as vice-president, Evie North as secre- tary, Sheri DeYoung as social council chairman, and Sally Dill and Tom Duff as council members. In planning our banquet, This Wonderful Year 1959, and the prom, Athenian Allure, we were assisted by the class sponsors, Mr. Alfred Hemmer and Mrs. Mildred Luse. With Chris leading us for the final year aided by Ron Hege, vice-president; Sheri DeYoung, secretary; Bob Shine, social council chairman; and Annette Plesniak and Evie North, social council members, we moved into our final days at South Side. After the Senior Reception, we faced our banquet with thoughts of both the past and the future. The senior play followed, and we heard the final notes of prom music fade into Pomp and Circumstance. Ivy Day and Recognition Day were succeeded by baccalaureate services and Com- mencement, concluding our four years at South Side. Aiding the officers in planning the senior class events are the sponsors, Miss Mary Crowe, Mr. Earl Sterner, and Mr. Robert Petty. 28

National Honor Society Scholarship . . . Leadership . . . Character . . . Service. These four virtues are the qualities necessary for a student to be selected a member of National Honor Society. On February 28, seventy-three seniors included in fifteen per cent of the upper third of their class were tagged with the traditional green and white ribbons signifying their elec- tion to National Honor Society. Each distinguished senior was escorted by a faculty mem- ber to the National Honor Society banquet on April 28 where pins were presented.
