Sally Capps editor-in-chief Evilou North associate editor Published by the Publications Department South Side High School, Fort Wayne, Indiana Worlds of Emphasis page 3 Seniors page 27 Underclassmen t page 61 Faculty page 95 mizatu Organizations page 137 Athletics page 113 Table of Contents The complex life of a South Side student revolves around three worlds of emphasis. Grouped together, these worlds form the foundation of his future. Taken individ- ually, each of these worlds affects a different facet of the student's life, whether academic, religious, or social. Worlds of Emphasis Prologue The future — a vast, unknown expanse — containing our individual futures — college, a life's vocation, the path our whole life will take — these will for the majority of South Side students be decided within the next ten years. The foundation for our future is determined by our rela- tionships with three worlds — the world of education, exemplified in the school; the world of religion, centered in our church affiliation and brought into our school life through religious assemblies and club activities: ami finally, our social world which offers us unlimited oppor- tunities to meet people and make friends and to develop our own talents and char- acters. These worlds are integral parti of our future. They will, for all of us. be developed and expanded to broader limits within the next ten years — for us . . . THE DECADE OF DESTINY. Thursday, better known as Times day to Archer students, finds all subscribers including Sam Carter, Ken Davis, and Bob Bartel perusing the school paper. Concentrating all their efforts on the typewriters, loyal Times members Janet Dinius, Peggy Schmidt, Janet Brenn, and Jenny Manth furiously type to hand in last-minute copy. The quest for learning . . . unexhaustible and always challenging. Tom Halley seeks solitude in the public library to study and to ques- tion the knowledge found by others. Tonya Hines escapes the confusion and routine of every-day life and finds a time for contemplation in a world of her own. Academic World An important friendship formed in high school is that between student and teacher. Mrs. Ruth Fleck and Joan Erck contemplate and discuss the merits of an impressionistic oil painting. Escaping from the reality de- picted in the senior play, Tom Felger, Steve Black, and Steve Huff- man approach another world through their plaintive melodies as the stage crew works. But Your Honor, pleads Jim Carter as District Attorney Flint on behalf of his client Miss Faulkner, portrayed by Cindy Miller. Jack Winder as Defense Attorney Stevens has just questioned the infallibility of the handwriting expert, played by Susan Bond, in the interests of his client Karen Andre, played by Judy English. Judge Heath, portrayed by Tom Felger, other members of the senior play cast, and the jury picked from the audience, hear testimony about the Night of January 16. Waving good-by to the well-wishers who have come to see them off, journalists Evie North, Sally Capps, Jim Carter, Bob Shine, and adviser, Mr. James Rohrabaugh eagerly anticipate the coming week at Columbia University in New York City. Karen Klaehn, Patty North, and Nancy Redding find that art too takes a forward look as they view an oil painting at the Art Museum. 8 Underclassmen Bonnie Russell, Tom Bear, Judy Merrill, and Lissa Hoffman check the bulletin board to keep up-to-date on school events Culture is brought to the student body at the music assemblies and at the spring and winter concerts. Here Maria Habecker performs a ballet to Alice in Wonderland.'' - Music ... an important part of many Archer lives and a part which takes many long hours of devoted practicing as illustrated by senior violinist Allen Steere. The Search . . . The search goes on even if confined to a locker, and Larry Lee seems to be intent on finding some valuable lost article! ' _ An important part of every senior English class is the hour-long book report. Dave Schwalm adds spice to his report on mountain and sea ballads with a few props. Jack Harms begins his search in the chemistry lab. Lissa Hoffman, searching for term paper material in the public library, ponders upon the selection of just the right book. 10 ' ? The first day of school — a time of confusion. These freshmen, armed with their yellow cards, provide no exception as they frantically search for their homerooms. In School _ Marie Rohn tags Edee White with the coveted ribbon of Na- tional Honor Society, a reward for her continuous search for knowl- edge throughout four years. The search on a local and national level . . . the Presidential election, brought to focus in the high school through work in social studies classes. 11 Senior Lesley Malone gains valuable experience by working as a checkout girl in a local supermarket. Through his job as carry-out boy, Don Stalter sup- plements his educational background. Sue Pfeifer prepares for the future by working part- time in a medical laboratory. Phil Stettner learns the importance of getting along with others as he takes complaints for a local newspaper. 12 Illustrating still another facet in student life, these stu- dents pause to reflect on the meaning of the symbol of their religion before entering the church. Religious tendencies within the school's clubs are exempli- fied in the Hi-Y induction ceremony which is conducted semi- annually in various community churches. Religious World Contributing to the mood of the religious as- semblies is the choir un- der the direction of Mr. Lester Hostetler. Before school, Archers congregate in the gym, one of the school's social hubs, to talk and try to study. Pam Olson and Dennis McBroom find a new place to get away from it all as they converse while perched in the limbs of a tree. ' % -•.' t fc. - 4 W W i ■•-■• • ;::P| g  fl - u fe , V lytf jf Mrs. Frances Stuart and service worker Linda Seibel chat formally over their work in seventh period study hall. The telephone . friendships thrive. . . a popular instrument upon which Jan Martindale .... 14 Bored, Sam? Tad McKay and Maria Marshall seem to be more interested in each other than in walking the dog. Maybe someone told them that hounds know how to find their own way. Social World The South Side Publications Philharmonic Orchestra gives those lea vine for New York a musical send-oft'. I . . . and Chad MacDowell prove no exception as they extol the virtues of Mr. Bell's invention. 15 Ecstatically happy over their reign, Sally Capps and her attendants Pam Olson, Sheri DeYoung, Molly Dixon, and Sylvia Ehrman preside over Hi-Y's annual Queen of Hearts Dance. Friends . . . Is he a halfback or quarterback, question Marie Paul- son, Cid Pfeifer, Bruce Foltz, and Jane Finell as they caze at Hi-Y's center of attraction at their football dance. King Jim Dawson leads off the coronation dance with Mary Meily at the Lettermen's after-game dance, Snow Fantasy. 16 ■, . h ' :, ?tM ■§ Wm w T aW W% 1 T M . ■■mk ■Br ''' :i ' 1 Ruthie Russ and Julie Rhinehart, who are working behind the refreshment counter, serve Miss Pauline Van Gorder at the Meterite after-game dance. Diligently working on decorations for the Queen of Hearts Dance are Hi-Y members Gene Jacobs, Jack Harms, George Shull, Larry Allen, and Dennis McBroom. Enraptured by the mood of their junior prom, Athenian Allure, are John Biteman, Sharon Bass, Penny Yore, Chuck Weinraub, Flip Anderson, John Wilks, Judy Schumm, Stan Redding, and Sally Mallough. 17 Typifying today's misconception of Thanksgiving, Mary Collins, Bob Griffiths, Susie Bumgardner, and Mike Levy try to convey the true meaning of the November holiday to the student body during the Thanksgiving Assembly last fall. Whooping it up in appreciation of the first feast of Thanksgiving, these Indians provide a con- trast to today's celebration of the national holiday. Creativity . . . While trying to convince Pro- fessor Van Blowhard of their tal- ent, John Margerum, Brian Ben- nington, Tom Thieme, and Dave Zimmerman entertain the student body at the annual Talent Show. 18 Christ's disciples, portrayed by students, discuss His life at the Easter Assembly and try to relate it to modern day situations. The newest shaggy dog story? Not really. It's just Diane Irmscher and Pam Olson haunting the halls while waiting to present their dance in the Christmas Assembly. All I want for Christmas is ... a jack-in-the-box! exclaims Ricky Meeks to Jeanie Carroll in a department store scene pre- sented at the Christmas Assembly. Aren't they just too charming? . . . Merla Ogles, Slyvia Somers, Sharin' Pohl, Silly Dawson, and Corral Johnson mock the cheerleaders at a pep session during basketball season. School Spirit . Sectionals or bust! declares Mr. Thomas Compton, who is prepared to fight for a seat on the floor, re- gardless of prevailing weather conditions. Go, fight, win! yells Maria Habecker as she springs high above the gym floor in her exuberance at a pep session. 20 Let's ree-ly yell! say cheerleaders Sharon Carrel and Jeanie Carrol as they try to transmit their enthusiasm to the pep session ctowd. Touchdown! Mr. Everett Havens demonstrates signals used by the referees during football games. A selection from Bach? No, it's a band of South Side's distinguished faculty members performing their rendition of the school song to cheer the basketball team on to a Sectional victory. 21 Hard at work during the Christmas season, Hi-Y members Steve Pratt, Stan Redding, John Biteman, and Karl Bandemer sell Christmas trees for the local YMCA. Service . . . Spring cleaning anyone? These Assemblies Workshop members, Phil Spray, Sue Horth, Lissa Hoffman, Sue Kelley, and Martha Lanning seem to be making the best of the situation as they clean the club's storeroom. A sophomore dance class perfects its oriental routine to be presented at the annual spring show presented by the girls' athletic department. 22 Relating the responsibility for the growth of Fort Wayne to Service Club members, Mr. Earl Schwalm delivers the principal speech while Jim Carter and Dave Dill give him their attention at the annual banquet for Service Club members. Providing a service to the school, Junior Red Cross mem- bers Porter Pace, Marcia Melching, Marsha Bechtold, Sherry Hall, and Alice Ashton, apply a little elbow grease to the publications trophies. Where's the ladder, cries Dave Schwalm, who, aided by John Wilks, Larry Allen, Sylvia Ehrman, and Sharon Carrel, is trying to decorate the goal- posts before a football game. A friend? wonders Susie Scott as she receives a parking ticket from one of the policemen who controls school traffic. 23 Armed with Gersmehl's Go-Juice, John Wilks struggles with his English reports in a monologue at the Senior Banquet. On top of Old Smokey . . . Juniors Susie Phillips, Sandy Miller, Peggy Floyd, and Judy Chapman harmonize during the entertainment at their banquet, South's World Summit. Unity . . Where's the paste? queries Pam Olson as she and fellow decorarors Nancy Vanderford, Pam Stech, Sharon Longenberger, and Diana Meyer work on the tablecloths for the Senior Banquet, Perspective. 24 More punch? Susie Stauffer serves as hostess at the Senior Reception while Archer seniors and their parents chat in line. Looking for something? They seem to be, but actually Susie Stauffer, Linda Amos, and Molly Dixon are giving their rendition of The Man On The Fly- ing Trapeze a t the Senior Banquet. Fascinated students and teachers watch Mr. George Scott, a former member of the faculty, sketch scenes of Paris at last spring's sophomore party, Parisian Prome- nade their first class function. 25 Although rain temporarily dampened their spirits, the class of I960 had the traditional Ivy Day ceremony in the gym with Barb Wallace as reigning queen being crowned by Senior Class President Dick Roth- berg. Barb's attendants were Merle Baldwin, Janet Lawry, Margo Dixon, and Susie Van Fossen. Dr. Dean F. Berkley from Indiana University addresses the I960 graduating class on the Chal- lenge of Change at Commencement exercises. Susie Stauffer presides over the I960 Recognition Day ceremonies as Spirit of South Side. 26 Seniors For the 1961 graduates, the wearing of the rap and gown does not signify the culmination of a career but rather the beginning of a limitless future of opportunity. Knowing that one's high school education is only the beginning of what will constitute a richer and fuller life, members of the senior class must explore ex'ery avenue of research and learning in an effort to prepare themselves in order to make the greatest contribution to society. For only then can the true success of each individual be measured. Chosen to lead the class of 1961 in organizing the many activities during this all-important year are seated, left to right, Evilou North and Sheri DeYoung, mem- bers of the social council. Standing, left to right, are Bob Shine, social council chairman; Annette Plesniak, member of the social council; Ron Hege, vice-presi- dent; and Chris Parrott, president. The Class of 1 96 J Seeks the Challenge As freshmen we began to take an interest in new sub- jects while we struggled to grasp the elusive fundamentals of knowledge. For the next three years we strived to maintain the standards set by previous classes as well as to set our own. As sophomores we assumed responsibility by electing Chris Parrott, president; Evie North, vice-president; Sheri De- Young, secretary; Tom Duff, social council chairman; and Molly Dixon and Dennis McBroom, members of the social council. Our sponsors, Mrs. Mildred Luse, Mr. Alfred Hem- mer, and Mr. Leon Smith, helped us to produce, Tin Pan Alley. In 1959 we become juniors — upperclassmen at last. The class officers were again captained by Chris Parrott with Bob Shine as vice-president, Evie North as secre- tary, Sheri DeYoung as social council chairman, and Sally Dill and Tom Duff as council members. In planning our banquet, This Wonderful Year 1959, and the prom, Athenian Allure, we were assisted by the class sponsors, Mr. Alfred Hemmer and Mrs. Mildred Luse. With Chris leading us for the final year aided by Ron Hege, vice-president; Sheri DeYoung, secretary; Bob Shine, social council chairman; and Annette Plesniak and Evie North, social council members, we moved into our final days at South Side. After the Senior Reception, we faced our banquet with thoughts of both the past and the future. The senior play followed, and we heard the final notes of prom music fade into Pomp and Circumstance. Ivy Day and Recognition Day were succeeded by baccalaureate services and Com- mencement, concluding our four years at South Side. Aiding the officers in planning the senior class events are the sponsors, Miss Mary Crowe, Mr. Earl Sterner, and Mr. Robert Petty. 28 Four Year Honor Roll JAMES CARTER Valedictorian 97.0 ROBERT SHINE Salutatorian 96.32 Linda Amos Ellen Beatty John Biteman Pamela Brown Sally Capps James Carter Michael Collins Beth Curley Carolyn DeVore David Dill Judith Dunlap Sylvia Ehrman Judith Eisenhut Joan Erck Ann Erickson Thomas Felger Janice Ferber Thomas Halley Jack Harms Marjorie Havens Rita Hessert Craig Holmes Jane Hunter Stephen Marshall Janet Martindale Marilynn Masters Ellen McCarron Gretchen Meister Diana Meyer Toby Gerhold mainta 90 during the time he Cynthia Miller Donald Nelson Evilou North Chris Parrott Ann Plogsterth Stephen Pohl Stanley Redding Marie Rohn Nancy Rose Joan Rothchild Edward Sarver David Schwalm Susan Scott Bob Shine Carolyn Sievers Linda Silverman Dian Spencer Shirley Stahlhut Joan Stanton Sandra Starke Pamela Stech Allen Steere Barbara Steiner Bill Stellhorn Nancy Swaim Todd Thompson Charles Weinraub Donna Weinraub Patricia Worsham ined an average above was at South Side. Service. These four virtues are the qualities necessary for a student to be selected a member of National Honor Society. On February 28, seventy-three seniors included in fifteen per cent of the upper third of their class were tagged with the traditional green and white ribbons signifying their elec- tion to National Honor Society. Each distinguished senior was escorted by a faculty mem- ber to the National Honor Society banquet on April 28 where pins were presented. These three were chosen as the most talented in the fine arts. Waiting for the first strains of The Skaters' Waltz, Gonda Rider and Rick Busch, best dancers, prove that their prowess on ice is equal to their excellence on the dance floor. Jack Winder, one-half of the cutest couple, perfects his stroke as he gives golf instructions to his admiring other half, Diane Irmscher. How could Diane miss with that club? 32 With a shake of chivalty and a pinch of congeniality, Chris Parrott, boy with the best personality and most perfect gentleman, shows Evilou North, most perfect lady, and Sheri DeYoung, girl with the best personality, what ingredients go into a successful pizza. Sally Capps, girl most likely to succeed, grasps the guide rope with confidence as she steers the toboggan of the future down its path. Bob Shine, outstanding in scholarship, and Jim Car- ter, also most scholarly and boy most likely to succeed, glide down the trail with Sally, who was also chosen outstanding in activities. I give up! Sylvia Ehrman, outstanding in activities, has stopped trying to divert the attention of best athletes Bob Bolyard and Steve Hargan and has decided to watch the boys' pool game for pointers. 33 First Row CAROL IRENE ABRAMSON. . .Art Club vice-presi- dent, pin. . .Service Club. . .36 Workshop. The task of molding us into citizens who must be prepared to accept the leadership of tomorrow is the epitome of the pro- fession, the faculty of South Side is representative of this assemblage which is dedicated to the improvement of us, the youth of the nation. May 25, 1961 Members of the Graduating Class: The class of 1961 is the largest to graduate from South Side High School, almost as large as the first four classes com- bined. In it are students of varying degrees of preparation, with widely differing plans and ambitions. What lies ahead for these people, and are they ready for the problems and op- portunities which face them? The future seems confused and uncertain, but it has always been that way. There are many unsolved problems of eco- nomics, national aspirations and personal relationships; these problems are certainly magnified in our day of rapid transpor- tation and instant communication. But these sometimes fright- ening problems furnish the frontiers for the future; the solu- tions challenge the best effort of each 1961 graduate; the answers will bring happiness and rewards in proportion to the abilities and work used in their solution. Certainly the members of this class should be prepared to face whatever the coming years may offer. They are the bene- ficiaries of a nation-wide program of education which is far better and more extensive than that of any other time or place. Additional educational opportunities have been provided by a community interested in educational, spiritual, and moral development. I believe that most of the members of the class of '61 have taken advantage of the offerings provided for them. If they have acquired information, habits of industry and responsibility, and have started to learn to make good judgments, their future, and that of the world, will be that much better. t kj2 u -vt A rvukb s R. Nelson Snider Principal 96 Pathfinders . . . Mr. Aaron T. Lindley points to one of the many school districts he supervises as Superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools. Providing capable leadership necessary for an effective school system, Superintendent Lindley is now in his eighth year as director. Mr. Ora Davis checks one of the many reference books he keeps as an aid to better helping Kelly pupils. As guidance director, Mr. Davis supplies students with jobs and college information. Helping Kellys to better prepare for the future is Miss Pauline Van Gorder, dean of girls, whose duty is to aid students with their problems. Working as a team, the three office secre- taries of South Side prepare to take a message. Mrs. Janet Weicker, left, relays the note from the telephone to Miss Marsha Klaehn, who gives it to Miss Frances Stobaugh, waiting at the typewriter. 97 Ann Arber English; B.A., M.A., Indi- ana University; Sponsor of Assemblies Workshop and Masque and Gavel Helen Burr English; B.A., Indiana State Teachers College; M.A., Breadloaf School of English, Middlebury Col- lege; University of Cali- fornia and University of Wisconsin Lowell Coats English, developmental reading; B.A., Central Normal College; M.A., University of Michigan Thomas Compton English; B.A., M.A., Yale University; B.D., Union Theological Seminary David Cowdrey English; B.S., Ball State Teachers College; St. Francis College and Notre Dame Ideas Florence Emshwiller English; B.A., Indiana Ronald Gersmehl English; B.A., Concordi; University; Sponsor of Teachers College; M.A., Meterites Ball State Teachers College Mr. Charles E. Archers Herald Winning Season, South Side's I960 varsity football squad chalked up the first winning season in seven years. The Archers provided many exciting moments, deciding three games in the final two minutes of play. Also rediscovered was the art of scoring rouchdowns. The Green and White sported an effective, hard-running offense which was quite capable of breaking loose with long gainers. In addition to exploding many games, this devastating attack kept opposing defense on their heels. The Kellys started the season by tying an inexperienced Elmhurst squad 0-0 in the Jamboree. However the Archers had a 6-0 advantage before being tied 6-6 by Anderson in the final seconds of play at Anderson. The Green then avenged themselves with a 20-6 upset of Indianapolis Shortridge at home. On the road, however, they suffered a 33-6 lacing at the hands of a fired-up Hammond Morton crew. The Shortridge game was the first indication of Souths improved offense. At Hammond the Archers were caught unprepared by a keyed Morton crew at their homecoming. In a city-series clash the next week, Bob Bolyard raced for one 85-yard touchdown and then skirted end for five yards and the winning touchdown in the last minute of play during a 14-12 decision over North Side at Northrop Field. Central copped South's next city-series venture 12-6. Bob Shine returned a kick-off 85 yards to help beat Warsaw 13-2. The Archers returned to South and beat Goshen 19-12. At South the following week- end, the Kellys edged Penn Township of Mishawaka 14-7 in the last minute with the help of two pass interference penalties. The Archers ran into one of the State's top powers in the last game of the season. A rugged Central Catholic outfit pounded out a 14-0 victory over the Bowmen to win the City Championship. 114 1960 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Sept. 6 Jamboree (Elmhurst) . 0 0 Sept. 9 Anderson 6 6 Sept. 16 Shortridge 20 6 Sept. 24 Morton 6 33 Sept. 30 North Side 14 12 Oct. 7 Central 6 12 Oct. 14 Warsaw 13 2 Oct. 21 Goshen 19 12 Oct. 28 Penn of Mishawaka ... 14 7 Nov. 4 Central Catholic 0 14 Robert Gernand Eugene Melchi Place Five On All-City Team Let's make a wish, say two Penn Township defensemen, using Archer halfback Bob Bolyard for a wish bone. Halfback Bob Bolyard and guard Bob Griffiths were named to the first squad while fullback John Somers, end Chris Parrott, and tackle Jim Dawson copped second team positions. South Side's grid squad went into the last game of the season with a chance to tie for the City Series championship. However, a high-powered Central Catholic team proved itself the most potent crew in this area by humbling all local oppo- sition. The Archers met the Irish onslaught very creditably and put up a rugged fight against a team whose lone defeat was at the hands of mighty South Bend Washington. Hardwood Season Yields Sectional Championship After finishing in a third place tie with Concordia in the City Series, the South Side Archers bounced b.ick and upset all contenders in the Fort Wayne Sectional Tournament, only to be defeated a week later in the Regionals. The Kellys were up for the Sectionals; they passed, shot, and generally played as well as any orher cage squad in the state. Monroeville was first to fall victim to the Archer arrows in an overwhelming 79-29 rour. In the second game, the Green humbled county power New Haven with almost flaw- less ball. The third match pitted South against Huntertown which resulted in another Archer victory. In the final game, the Bowmen came up against City Series champion Central. In that game, the tight Archer zone forced the Tigers to hurry their shots and consequently, fre- quently miss the mark. That, coupled with sharp shooting and near-perfect offensive play, paved the way for a resound- ing Archer victory for their fourteenth Sectional champion- ship, their fifth in the last six years. However, a week later, in the Regional Tourney, the spirit had waned and the once whetted Archer shafts had lost their edges. After an uninspired and unimpressive vic- tory over Kendallville in the afternoon, the Kellys bowed to a very sharp Berne Bear squad in a 56-42 defeat. 1%w 120 In City Series competition, the Archer's third place finish was much lower than they had placed for a number of years. They only held victories over Elmhurst, Central, and Concor- dia, falling before arch-rival North Side twice, to Central once, and once to Central Catholic. The regular season, as a whole, was very exciting. The Archers closed the competition with 1 1 wins and nine losses which embodied many close games including a trio of over- time contests. Moreover, although the Green conquered other teams by as much as 39 tallies, they went under only twice by more than ten points — 12 at the hands of Michigan City, and 1 5 by rugged Froebel. The Kellys had proud victories over ranked teams Fort Wayne Central and sharp Goshen. Nerves are tense as Archer sprinters Bandemer, Duff, Werling, and Johnson line up for the gun to sound in the 100-yard dash. Head track coach, Mr. Robert Gernand, faced the 1961 track season with one of the toughest track squads in recent years at South Side. The boys were uniformly strong and well-represented and more than adequately filled the places vacated by graduates. Tom Duff and Karl Bandemer returned to do well in both sprint events, alternating first and second places with one another. Carl Johnson again ran the hurdles in fine style while Junior Nate Norment hung close on his heels. In the 440 yard dash, Bob Shine and Bob Bolyard came on strong. Bolyard also par- ticipated in the half mile. In the endurance events, Al Rainbolt and Jim Porter clocked good times in the mile run. At length, the Archer relay squads were up to their usual par. The Green were also strong in the field events. Jim Dawson and John Somers led the field in the shot put. Both boys threw the weight over fifty feet. Dan Belschner cleared heights around six feet in the high jump, while Don Eisenacher excelled in the pole vault. ■HIP ' 126 John Somers Shot Put The cross bar poses little problem for senior vaulter Don Eisenacher as he easily clears it by a wide margin. The Archer cindermen faced a very tough and exciting schedule this season. Highlights of the year included dual meets with track powers Kokomo and Elkhart as well as participation in the North Side, Delphi, and Lima relays. Close on his heels usually came Rainbolt, McMillen, Lee, or Schmitz. The remaining thinlies spaced them- selves well, keeping the score low. Next season also looks promising as better than half of the varsity squad will be returning. Further- more, this year's reserve squad also looked very strong, finishing with an 11-1 record. This program, under the able guidance of Mr. Clair Motz, has grown to the status of one of the most organized high school intramural programs in this area. The intramural program provides organized competition both for varsity athletes and, more important, for those boys who are not able to participate in varsity sports. The three weight divisions, light, middle, and heavy help to equalize the competition. Another division within the intramural program is that of noon league and night league. These give equ-d time for participation for those boys who have noon or after-school conflicts. Under the direction of Mr. Clair Motz, the intramural program is run smoothly and effi- ciently throughout the school year. Jack Garrison strikes out with the form that won him the middleweight bowling crown. bob Weiss and Tom Wooding, left to right, demon- strate the form that carried them to the middle and heavyweight tennis championship titles. Dave Morell and Jeff Baker try to out-think each other in the intramural chess tournament. Speedsters David Jones and Gary Butz are the light and middle- weight cross country champs this year. Heave is the cry as two intramural tug-of-war teams stretch the rope in a deadlock in a night-league contest. 135 Golf champs for the three weight divisions are, left to right, Don Reiling, Larry Schnei- der, and John Schmitt. Fast and furious is the action as two intra- mural giant volleyball teams battle it out. The gruelling intramural wrestling form is demonstrated by Mike Stedge and Glen Crosier as the rest of the wrestlers observe. 136 Organizations Knowing that lije's seconds are eternities. Archers continually seek to further their interests and abilities in a ceaseless effort to enrich their lives and provide services to the school and community. Most South Side students participate in extra-curricular activities in order to obtain a medium through which their creative talents may be expressed. Totem Depicts Decade of Destiny Last spring marked the beginning of preparations for the 1961 Totem. After the editors selected the events which would best represent the many facets of Archer school life, picture taking began. Sometimes the desire to publish a distinctive book proved rather disastrous; but common sense prevailed, and by the end of March, the majority of Totem copy had been written, proofread, rewritten, and sent to the printers. Although mistakes sometimes proved discouraging, almost to the point of despair, they were far outweighed by the excitement and fun of pub- lishing a record of school life. The circulation staff worked to the peak and surpassed all previous records by selling over 2,050 books. Sally Capps Evilou North Already full of new ideas for the 1962 Totem, Babette Jones, editor, and Diane Fredrick, associate editor, begin drawing their preliminary dummy. 138 Photographers, seated, left to right, Ken Lowden, Mike Seaman, Tom Hammons, and standing, Fred Musser, check over their film records. 139 Co-circulation managers, left to right, Margie Ha- vens and Diane Irmscher make a last-minute check for the 1961 Totem. Members of the 1500 Club satisfy their hunger at the annual publications Christmas Party. Quill and Scroll Quill and Scroll, the ultimate goal of all members of the South Side Times and Totem staffs, initiated twenty- two Kelly journalists into its organization this spring. This group was honored at a banquet in May where they received their pins. Each week found the student body well pleased with the latest edition. Student approval of the paper was shown in sub- scriptions as every homeroom achieved 100 per cent sales for rhe fifth straight semester. This record was far over that of any other city school for both the spring and fall semesters. Through the efforts of Mr. Rohrabaugh, two of the general managers and the Totem editors were able to attend the Columbia University's annual press con- vention. Highlights of the trip included their appear- ance on the Dave Garroway Show and Youth Forum and their visit to the Overseas Press Club. The Green Book, which is edited by Ellen McCarron, will be a catalogue of the rules and curriculum of the school. A discontinued publication, it will be issued again this fall for the first time in 20 years to every member of the student body and faculty. This issue will then be given to every incoming student for the next four years. Pegasus, the Archer literary magazine, provides students with a culmination of their best literary efforts. The title, taken from Greek mythology, denotes a winged horse which poets were said to mount when they needed inspiration. Outstanding poems, short stories, and essays written in class were submitted by the English teachers; and some students were invited to write articles. The magazine at- tempts to present an example of Kelly students' creative efforts. Edited by Barb Steiner, the book was placed on sale for the first time this spring under the direction of Stan Redding, circulation manager. Also aiding in the publica- tion were Joan Stanton, assistant editor; Sheri DeYoung, art editor; and Cindy Miller and Jim Carter, editorial staff members. But this book would not have been possible without the guidance and unceasing assist- ance of many people — our adviser, Mr. James Rohrabaugh; Frances Stobaugh, who did the endless checking of names; the printers, Alorey. Irish, Jerry, and Don: Waiters' Studio, which developed all our pictures, not to mention their taking the senior and faculty pictures; and finally, all our staff , major and minor, including the Totem agents and those whom we borrowed from the Times in moments of crisis — Bob Shine, Stan Redding, and John Stein.
