South Side High School, stress- ing education above all else, ably provides for the needs of some 2,000 students of all walks of life witli many varied interests. At no other period in the school's thirty- eight year history has the education of America's youth been more impottant to the welfare of the people as well as the country. The future of the United States depends on the ability of its schools to teach not only subjects, but also to instill a never-failing curiosity and desire for knowledge beyond that available in required textbooks. Throughout the seasons, the faculty and administration of South Side strive to meet this challenge in the best pos- sible manner. By providing a varied curriculum and many different activities, Atcherland is able to give all an oppor- tunity to discover their talents and abilities. South Side stands forever ready to fulfill our interests. May we always well remember All thy gifts to us so free And pay homage to thy mem'ry Hail, South Side High School, to thee. ever reu Clil • • • Itu ever wciiuna ©abb nf (Eontftita Seniors page 11 Activities page 79 Underclassmen page 41 Athletics page 103 Faculty page 65 Student Life page 127 6 I960! A year of triumph and disappointment, of excitement and boredom, of unforgettable par- ties, homework, and memories . . . and of our Totem. To capture the hustle and bustle of Kelly life, we planned to carry the idea of the sweep of time through the year. After taking and retaking pictures of all aspects of Archer activities, we have tried to create a yearbook which will retain forever the spirit of I960. All meaning of vacation was lost as we measured, cropped, and pasted for many long hours. Flaring tempers and slight disagreements added spice and variety to our work. Under the watchful eye of Mr. James Rohrabaugh, our adviser, we searched for just the right ideas to present to you. It will be impossible to fotget the never-failing assistance of Mr. Harry Cole of Clippinger's Studio and of Morey, Jerry, Irish, Frank, and Don, the pressmen. We are grateful for the lasting patience of the teachers, coaches, and students with whom we came in contact; and to our many staff members, who diligently labored in notifying teachers, writing copy, and retaking pictures, we give double credit. Finally, a special thanks to Dan and Roy for listening sympathetically to our never- ending problems and complaints. Our work at last completed, we present the South Side yearbook . . . your book. -The Editors Arnd nowj sweeping, wi th the ti ime • • • But sir, you do have to pay an in- come tax, retorts Bob Thompson to Souths Grandpa Dick Rothberg as cast members of You Can't Take It With You, Geri Geller, Dick McGaw, Chuck Jellison, Nelson Kimball, and Joyce Brittenham look on in astonish- ment. Ok rouah buSu $c y hoot Isn't that amazing, remarks Mr. Robert Davis, peer- ing at Bob Duncan's mysterious concoction while Chem- istry 2 students Janet Terry, Dan O'Laughlin, and Nick Roembke busily test their salts. By the look on JoAnn High's face, Uuulk! expresses her thoughts on the whole mess of locker clean-up even though fellow senior Dick Erb ably assists her in this annual job. ... three hours of sleep .... can't keep my eyes open . . . why doesn't the print stop moving . . . I'm hungry ... Sylvia Ehrman's thoughts are familiar to all Archer students who eagerly pursue their education with unlimited enthusiasm. Two South Side students illusttate one of the most important facets in our busy Archer lives. . . . an d after h our5 Marcia Mosel is quite entertained by the antics of Chuck Jellison, but Bessie Ferguson and Dick Rothberg seem to be having their own conversation. ■PfW ' B UpBn j BV % ° ? -m vW i What grace! It's a good old-fashioned sing! Providing the accompaniment are Geri Geller and Bessie Fer- guson, both outstanding in activities. Wendell Eicher, who was chosen best musician, warms up his trumpet. Joyce Brittenham, also outstanding in music, joins with Kate Rastetter, chosen for extra-curricular work, for a duet. Waving her fist in true oratorical form, Janet Terry, best speaker, demonstrates to her athletic friends Dave Barrett and Ken Howe the secret of her success. 14 Superlatives Now Sharon, here's the carburetor, points out Gus Wade; but Sharon Probst, the other half of the cutest couple, seems to be enjoying herself too much to be bothered by spark plugs and radiators. Seated on the fence of the future, looking up to bigger and better things, are Merle Baldwin, girl most likely to succeed, and Penny Hunt, chosen for scholarship. Chosen as boy most likely to succeed and outstanding in scholarship, Dick Rothberg is a strong support fot the venture. It takes two to tango! And what better two than the best dancers of the senior class, Margo Dixon and Bill Lentz. 15 Pictured above are our capable senior class officers- Dick Rothberg, president; Dick McGaw, vice-president; Susan Van Fossen, secretary-treasurer; Barb Frederick, social council mem- ber, Janet Lawry, chairman of the social council; and Ken Howe member of the social council. These officers not only were re ' sponsible for the basic planning of our activities, bu thel 'b - hind-the-scenes assistance was invaluable and worthwhile. wpp h u Gersmehi and Miss Mary Graham, shown right were chosen by the officers as our class advisers The choices' proved to be industrious, friendly, and extremely helpful SS advice as well as actual aid. To these two teachers we owe fl deal of our success throughout this all-important year § The Class of 1960 Remembers Archer Daze We will have these moments to remember The strains of this memorable tune echoed through our minds and hearts as we relived, at our Senior Banquet Leaves of Time, ' the many wonderful moments that we have shared as the class of I960, moments that we can never forget The unique banquet presentation afforded a fine opportunity to review the four exciting years we have spent as loyal Arch- ers of South Side. As freshmen we plunged into every activity, injecting our enthusiasm into all we met and pausing just lone enough to realize that we were just a little afraid and be wildered. By our second year of high school we were in the swing, proud not to be the youngest in the school. For our officers we chose Phil Carson, president; Ken Howe vice- president; Dick McGaw, secretary-treasurer; Merle Baldwin chairman of the social council; and Janet Lawry and Dick Rothberg, members of the social council. Under their able leadership we planned and enjoyed an entertaining and profitable party. b In our junior year we were confronted with the chal- lenge of school leadership; and we met that challenge with the tremendous capability reflected in our two class activi- ties, our banquet and our memorable Junior Prom These highlights were planned under the capable leadership of Dick Rothberg, president; Merle Baldwin, vice-president- Dick McGaw, secretary-treasurer; Win Moses, social coun- cil chairman; and Dan Tritch and Barb Frederick, social council members. Quickly moving into our final year at Archerland, we Seniors proudly became the real leaders of the school With the same enthusiasm we displayed during our first three years, we set out to make our senior year the very best When we, as members of the class of I960, look back over our Archer daze, we will undoubtedly recall these and other experiences as our moments to remember 16 First Row JOYCE ABBOTT. These effervescent students are the reason why the Green and White continue fighting when the chips are down. Working together with the Reserve squad, the Varsity yell leaders plan and present the various pep sessions throughout the school year. The varsity squad introduced a new type of football uni- form this year, consisting of green sweaters and slacks. They also spent a great deal of time making huge green pom poms to add spark to their yells. After the sport season, the cheerleaders spent many hours training candidates for next year's squad. At this time Miss Helen Pohlmeyer, new sponsor of the cheerleaders, pre- sented the varsity squad with their school letters. Lively Reserve cheerleaders, kneeling, Sharon Eitman and Jeanie Carroll, and, standing, Sylvia Ehrman, Sheri De Young, and Sharon Carrel showed much enthusiasm in leading the student body in peppy yells. South Side's varsity cross country squad rounded into shape to again qualify for the State Meet. It was the second straight year that the Kelly harriers placed in the Sectional as a team, although the runners finished with an unimpressive 2-3 mark. Junior Al Rainbolt consistently paced the Green as he and senior Sam Green led the pack home in competitive meets. Both runners were clocked well under 1 1 minutes on the two mile courses run by the Kellys. Backing up the first two harriers were juniors Dave Reece and Paul Romey with sophomores Jim Porter, Terry Di- b;rt, and Larry Lee. Victories rhis season included a 21-23 win over Elmhurst's Trojans and a 19-39 defeat of Concordia's Cadets. The three losses consisted of a reversal at the hands of Central and Ko- komo in a triangular meet and two more by New Haven's Bulldogs. Coach Charles Porky Holt can look forward to next season as the harriers will lose only one runner from this year's Sectional squad. Rain- bolt, whose best time was a fine 9:43, will defi- nitely form a strong nucleus for the I960 team. 1959 CROSS COUNTRY SQUAD: First row, left to right, Coach Porky Holt, Terry Diberr, Larry Lee, Stuart Schmitz, and Jim Porter; second row, Al Rainbolt, Sam Green, Dave Reece, Paul Romey, and Larry Fruchey. 105 1959 VARSITY TEAM — First row, left to right: Ken Howe, Frank Lude, Jim Dawson, Jim Olinske, Bill Spindler, Bob Griffiths, Dan Tritch, and Bob King; second row. Gridders Battle to 4-5 Slate After showing considerable promise in the early season, South Side's 1959 varsity gridders finished their schedule with a losing 4-5 slate. The Archers had a one game improvement over last year's 3-4-1 record, although tying for the cellar position in the City Series race. The Kellys posted an impressive 4-2 record until losing the last three games. The Archers opened the season with a win over Anderson, the first victorious opener in ten years. The following week the record was evened when second-rated Indianapolis Shortridge defeated the Green 31-0. After two away contests, South defeated Hammond Morton and city rival North Side. Morton led the Green at halftime, but the home forces fought back to defeat the Black 14-6. The 14-6 win over the Redskins was the first since 1952, as the Green came from behind to roll over the Red. Central's Tigers won the City Series race as they pounded South 27-0 in the latter's fifth game. The Green easily routed Royerton 40-0 the following week with the Kelly benchmen playing the entire last three quarters. Traveling to Goshen and Huntington, the Bowmen found the opposition too tough to conquer. Goshen tromped the visitors 33-0 in a wet, muddy contest; and the Green's fourth defeat was a 34-7 loss to the Vikings of Huntington. Central Catholic dumped the Archers into the City Series basement as the Purple bumped the Green 25-0 in the seasonal windup for both squads. Kellys Play Under New Lights The first step in the remodeling of the South Side Stadium was completed this fall when a new lighting system, giving bril- liance to the field, was added. The system consists of six 80- foot poles, each holding twenty-four 1,500-watt lamps. The new lights were used for all of South Side's home games, beginning with the Hammond Morton game on September 5. Work on the lights began in August when concrete bases were laid for the poles. The poles were then assembled on the ground; and, following the removal of the old posts, the new system was installed. This system can now hold its own with the lights on Northrop Field, which previously was the oniy well-lit gridiron in the area. Under such brilliance. Archer players, coaches, and fans will enjoy many games to come. Archers Defeat City Foe North South Side's football squad defeated arch rival North Side this year in the Kelly's fourth game of the season. Although the Redskins scored early in the game to take a 6-0 lead, the Green moved the ball hard in the second quarter and scored on a beautiful aerial to Ken Howe, end, to make it 7-6 at the half. The Archers took definite command in the second half re- sulting in another seven points when fullback John Somers bulled across the goal line for the touchdown. The contest ended in a 14-6 score, South's first victory over city opponent North since 1952. The victory was the Green's third win against one loss. 107 Top to bottom: . Cagemen Finish Season With 10-11 Mark South Side's varsity basketball squad, under the mentorship of Don Reichert, closed out the 1959-60 hard- wood season with a 10-11 record. With senior Dave Barrett leading the way, the Bowmen seemed headed for the fifth straight city series title. The Green stumbled twice at the hands of Central's Tigers and the Irish of Central Catholic to ruin a 4-0 record in local competition and to place second to the city and sectional champion Tigers. The Kelly's trimmed crosstown rival North Side twice in the season and dropped Central one time, although the Bengals defeated the Green in two later matches. The mark, a victory streak of 34 consecutive wins over city competition, was accomplished by Kelly hardwood squads of the past five seasons under the leadership of head coach Don Reichert. Included in the record are four city and sectional titles, the 1958 titles being on the path to the state championship. The most interesting series of the five year period was the spirited competition with mid-town rival Central, who finally succeeded in breaking the Kelly spell 58-44 in the second game of this season's rivalry. In eleven tries, the Green were forced into four overtime contests in order to bring home a victory. Outstanding among the overtimes was the 1958 sectional win, believed by many to have been the little state tourney. Rounding out the var- sity five were Gerd Biewald, freshman; Larry Chen, junior; and Steve Cook, sophomore, who all showed promise for next season. 1960 VARSITY TENNIS SCHEDULE April 12 Marion 1 3 Peru 13 Concordia 2 1 Goshen 22 Muncie Central 30 Fort Wayne Central May 4 Central Catholic 5 Bluffton Burris Singles Tourney 12 Muncie Burris 14 Concordia 19 Fort Wayne Central 20 Fort Wayne North 26 Howe Military Golf . . . With several blue ribbon performers leading the way, the Kellys' power was second only to that of city foe North Side, the area's perennial powerhouse on the cinders. Several outstanding runners copped individual honors for the Green. Sprinters Bob Shine, Tom Duff, Bill Lentz, and Karl Bandemer headed the speed- sters; while Carl Johnson and Win Moses grabbed honors in the hurdles. Distance men Bob Bolyard and Al Rainbolt proved their power as juniors, warn- ing all prep runners of the future season. Big Jim Dawson was consistent in the shot put as his fifty-foot heaves easily earned the Green first place points. Backing up the blue ribbon winners were the VonGunten twins and Nate Norment, a sophomore speedster. John Somers, Ron Hey, Don Eisenacher, and Steve Stults gained team points for their efforts in the field events. Bandemer and Duff were valuable in the dashes, while Shine and Lentz made fine showings in the 440. Moses and Johnson pushed state hurdle champ Jack Hallenbeck of North Side for honors in the stick-stepping competition. Dawson, whose rec- ord-breaking performances earned him state-wide rec- ognition, paired with Somers to pick up field event points.
