But the South Side Archers, the Number 1 team in the state, bested all comets to become the 1958 basketball champions. Possessing the tallest player in Indiana history in Mike McCoy, tremendous rebounders and shooters in both Dan Howe and Tom Bolyard, a brilliant outside shooter in Carl Stavreti, and an all-around ball player in Rich Miller, the Archers marched by some of the toughest opposition in the state to record their 28 vic- tories and win the City and State championships. The first five needed the aid of the reserves, Bill Meyer, Larry Miller, Jim VaChon, Nick DeMetre, Mike Page 6 shows Southis four captains accepting the state trophy. The team to celebrate dunked Coach Reichert in a cold shower. The huge fieldhouse is filled with screaming fans as the team carries their coach off the floor. All worry- ing vanishes C page 85 as Mr. Snider congratulates the team on their championship. Fans showed their en- thusiasm at the game and later at the victory bonfire. The last net of 1958 is cut by our state champs who enjoyed a dinner at PanDee's. Our sportsmanship trophy is shown on page 9. Some 20,000 admirers gather at Baer Field to welcome their team. Mr. Snider eyes the victory cake, Mr. Reichert also looks pleased about the trophy awarded him, page 10, at the Southgate Plaza celebration. The celebrations ended with a pep session Monday morning and a record hop in the afternoon at the Coliseum. 14 Simmons, Ken Howe, and Ted Lebrecht, who kept them hustling all season. As has been the watchword in ath- letics at South this year, the teamis success depended largely upon the excellent and unselfish teamwork shown by the boys at all times. The state championship is a great tribute to Coach Reichert along with Athletic Director Wayne Scott and Assistant Coach Bill Geyer, who have developed such a fine group of athletes. Don, as he is called by the team, has often said, It has been a great feeling knowing that these boys were not only great basketball stars but true gentlemen every time they stepped onto the floor for a gamefi A Great Seaton A Great Tournament Bl ff T251 We They u ton u i Keiidaiiviiie 65 32 Semomlf Concordia 56 54 Leo 68 40 New HHVUI 67 Z0 New Haven 67 53 Huntington 81 1 Auburn 62 47 Central . 60 52 T. A com- mittee of five faculty members makes the final selection, In early January, the forty-seven Seniors were tagged in their classes with the green and White ribbons significant of their election to the organization. On April 25 a banquet was given at the Chamber of Commerce in their honor Where pins were presented to the members of National Honor Society for the class of 1958. From Class of 58 19 Senior class officers and advisers are standing: Miss Mary Graham, adviser, Mickey Parrott, vice-president, Mr. J H McClure, adviser, and john Bennhoff, president. Other officers seated on the toboggan are Donna Ornas, secretary-treasurer and Carl Stavreti, Jolly Clarkson, Phil Shriner, and Susie Craig, social council. They Won Their Race In 1954, four hundred spirited Freshman colts lined up at the starting gate to begin the 1958 running of the Archer Derby. At the sound of the starting gun, we were off, finding a successful ullreshman Frolic at the first turn. Rounding the first turn into the Sophomore year, we selected our first crew of jockeys and trainers. john Bennhoff, president, Phil Shriner, vice-president, Nancy Burton, secretary-treasurer, and Susie Craig, Dick Miller, and Dan Howe, social council, guided the yearlings through the busy year, which included the memorable Sophomore Party Spring Daze. Our trainers that year were Miss Marcia Hickman and Mr. Marion Feasel. Miss Shirley Maloney and Mr. William Applegate were selected as Junior trainers the next year to guide us through the backstretch and into the far turn. john Bennhoff, president, Jolly Clarkson, vice-president, Susie Craig, secretary-treasurer, and Phil Shriner, Dick Miller, and Ted Despos, social council, were always ready to lend assistance as the three-year-olds worked hard to prepare for Kelly Karousel, the Junior Banquet held in November. We raced through the year toward the homestretch of our derby, ending our junior class ac- tivities with the never-to-be-forgotten junior Prom, Oriental Moon, and the wonderful parties after the dance. Our turn into the homestretch marked the beginning of the Senior year. Capable jockeys were chosen to lead the class through the many Senior activities. John Benn- hoH was again elected president. Mickey Parrott was 20 chosen vice-president, Donna Ornas, secretary-treasurer, and jolly Clarkson, Susie Craig, Carl Stavreti, and Phil Shriner, social council. Our Senior trainers were Miss Mary Graham and Mr. H. McClure. The busy round of Senior activities began as we en- tertained our parents and teachers at the annual Senior Reception. Soon the Christmas holidays arrived with the gay Alumni Dance, which brought news of college from the classes of previous years. Tag Day brought an end to restless hope and anticipation when forty- seven Seniors were tagged for National Honor Society. On February 7, our Senior Banquet, Treasured For- ever,'f was held at St. john's Evangelical and Reformed Church. It was highlighted by a prophecy, prepared and read by Susie Craig and Bill Boggess. Then Time Out for Ginger was selected as the Senior Play, and many seniors helped Mr. jack Morey, the director, to make the play a success. At last spring came, and we saw the finish line loom- ing before us. The beautiful Ivy Day ceremony fol- lowed the parade, which was led by the Queen and her court. Recognition Day brought honors to those who had earned them. At the Baccalaureate service, we spent an hour in worship together. Our Senior Prom put us in a dreamy mood as we enjoyed our last social event at South Side. On Wednesday, june 4, we members of the class of l958 crossed the finish line to find ourselves facing a lifetime of races to run and win. Confident, we knew that the Archer Derby had well prepared us for the race of life. Fimf R010 CHARLENE ARMEY. . Chuck . . .Totem agent. NANCY JANE ARNOLD. . Not until after the last Totem had been distributed in june did our hectic race end. At first we were puzzled by the questions that came to mind, but with the never-ending advice and technical knowledge of Miss Rowena Harvey, our adviser, the help of engravers and printers who smoothed out the rough places, the expert photography which captured stories of our memories, and the students whose circula- tion subscriptions made the '58 Totem possible, these puzzles were soon unraveled. Activity, a dull hum, and a spark of laughter were all 74 found in the Totem office during this year of hard work. Keeping in mind that we had a story to tell and a pic- ture to paint, we pasted, measured, glued, wrote, cut, assembled, and perfected until here it is .... the 1958 edition of your Totem. B Now that it is over and finished, we are glad and proud to say we, the yearbook workers, made this Totem a reality. We give our heartfelt thanks to Miss Harvey, the editors, Lois Root and Nancy Arnold, the students, teachers, printers, engravers, and subscribers for helping us tell your story of l958. Highlighting the agenda for the orchestra were two programs at the Plymouth Congregational Church and a concert in Berne, Indiana. The orchestra personnel also sported new outfits exactly like the choir members' outfits. Besides playing at games, assemblies, and concerts, the band had an unusually large number of pep sessions at which to perform. A 5,4 Q Track Manager To Wayne Scott, completing his seventh year as Athletic Director, falls the responsi- bility of scheduling top-Hight teams to oppose Archer squads. For all home contests, Scotty, as he is called by all who know him, must be sure that good officials have been assigned, tickets have been distributed or made ready for sale, programs have been printed, and ushers have been assigned, while for out-of- town games he must see that the teams have eating and lodging accommodations. After he has completed all of the tasks in his always congenial manner, Scotty still finds time to help the coaches build the teams that repre- sent South Side. Smblemen The student managers have the task of handling the some 6,000 pieces of equipment necessary for efficient operation of the Athletic Department. These boys, under the direction of Mr. Robert Petty, keep records of the practice jerseys, pants, shoes, socks, and all of the game equipment for the 150 boys participating on the grid- iron. This routine is also carried on throughout the basketball and track seasons. Besides keeping records for this equipment, the managers must be sure that there is a clean change of practice uniforms each week. Their never-ending job, which started back in August, will not be finished until the middle of june. After five early-season losses to Ander- son, 38-Og Shortridge, 33-O, Central, 7-6, North Side, 19-6 and Jackson, Mich, 26-0, Comb Robert Gwmmd the Archers fought back to trounce Missis- sinewa 34-0 and beat Concordia 12-7. The New Haven Bulldogs battled the Archers to a 13-13 tie in the final Archer road game, and the Archers came back home to drop a 19-7 decision to City Co-Champion Central Catholic. Although the record may have left something to be desired, the Archers possessed a great deal of talent, especially among the senior players. Carl Stavreti, shown on an end run in the picture at the lower left, led the Archer scoring from his halfback spot and earned himself a spot on the All-City team in his first year of varsity football. Rich Miller, having had a sterling year at fullback for the Archers, was also elected to the honor team after the season closed. Seniors Mickey Parrott, calling the signals, and Phil Shriner, running with Stavreti at halfback, rounded out the all-senior backfield. Most of the Archer line also was made up of seniors with jerry Saylor at a tackle spot, Bill White and Terry Winebrenner at the guards, and Larry Stoner at left end. With the final gun of the season, the other senior starter, jim VaChon, shown in the picture at upper right coming up from his tackle position to stop a North Side back, also completed his last game in an Archer uniform. But, although the absence of these seniors will certainly be felt, Coach Gernand has something to look forward to with Lettermen Steve Smith, Tom Bolyard, Dick Tipton, Dan Tritch, Bill Sutter, Bill Meyer, and Denny Payne, most of whom are shown in the picture at upper left, all returning next year. 97 s YXi.fZ25 3 :WBQQW m'sqNYZfAv1v ? Tenmlr The South Side tennis team, perennially tough, had a great group of boys returning from last year's strong team to carry the ban- ner for South this season. Dick McGaw, number 1 man last season, along with Steve Gaskill, john Meyerholz, Steve Meyers, john Bennhoff, and Dave Fell from last year's squad have already turned in three straight wins over Central Catholic, Marion, and Muncie Central. Coach Everett Havens, with Bob Haag to fall back on, looked forward with confidence to victories over the rest of the teams on the schedule which follows: April 22 Goshen 24 Central Catholic 25 Bluffton 26 Lafayette Doubles Tourney May 1 Central 3 Muncie Burris Invitational 6 Wabash 7 Bluifton 8 North Side 13 Muncie Burris 15 North Side 20 Central 23 Howe Military Front row, left to right: Dave Stewart, John Irmscher, and jack Winder, back row, left to right: Bob LaFever, Tom Graham, Coach Robert T. Racers The South Side track team for 1958, under the direction of Coach George Collyer, will be trying to add a track championship to the one the basketball boys have already won. Potentially the Archers have a great team. All but two lettermen are returning to carry the baton for the Green this year. Of course the absence of Dave Redding and Chris Stavreti will be felt, but Coach Collyer has a wealth of talent around which to build this yearls team. Rich Miller, already vaulting 12-2 this season, could be a real threat to the defending champion in the pole vault. Carl Stavreti, Dan Howe, and Dick Miller are back from last year's sparkling half-mile relay team. Howe also will be one of the top contenders in the high hurdles as he was last year in the state meet. Miller also has been a top finisher in the shot put. Along with these boys are Tom Bolyard in the half mile, Stavreti in the broad jump, Phil Cartwright in the mile along with Ed Hartman trying to fill Reddingls big shoes, Mel Smith and Joe Roth in the quarter-mile, and many other hopefuls who will be trying to bring home victories this season. Pacers The South Side cross-country team, shown in the picture above, had potentially one of the greatest teams in recent years. The harriers, under the watchful eye of Coach George Collyer, pushed forward in the early part of the season to record five straight victories and what looked to be an undefeated season. Led in the early part of the season by junior Ed Hartman, the Green rolled to victories over Concordia 27-30, and over North Side, perennially Sectional champions, also by the score of 27-30. The main factor in the success of this squad was the overall team balance. At no time did any one boy dominate the scene. The boys worked as a unit, and the teamwork led to victories over Central 21-42, Concordia 12-33, and Wabash 23-33. In these three races Sam Green and Phil Cartwright took over to lead the Archers home. In every case, however, Don Kern, Ron Bogan, and Hartman were always close behind. V But these boys, along with jack Esterline and Mike Albersmeyer, who kept interchanging in third and fourth spots, were hit by the Asian Hu after their victory over Wabash. Capable Mr. Motz has made all the sports enjoyable and interesting for those who participate. I ntwzmuml Trotters The trotting of 1200 feet was heard by the Intra- mural department this year as a new record was set for the participation in the many diHerent sports that are available to all the boys at South. The intramural program at South offers as a result the lifetime friend- ships between the boys who take part in the sports that they like. Sports for all, no one barred, is the intramural slogan. The intramural program gives the boy who is not varsity material an opportunity to compete in his favorite sport. Eighteen sports are available to the boys each year. Among these are basketball, football, baseball, volley- ball, bowling, handball, badminton, golf, and tennis. Of the eighteen sports offered, the average boy par- ticipates in about five different activities every year. Fair competition is one ideal that interests many boys, the three weight divisions that the program offers being one strong phase. This aim is achieved through par- ticipation in such sports as speedball, basketball, volleyball, tumbling, track, and softball. Tennis, ping pong, and badminton are also offered as special events. The tennis and ping pong champions for this year are Phyllis Nahrwold, left center, and jeanette Lynn, left bottom. For taking part in these activities, the girls receive numerals for 300 points, letters for 1500 points, and pins for 2000 points. A special reward, having her name engraved on the high point plaque, is given to the girl who has accumulated the highest number of points over a four year period. The high point win- ner this year is Phyllis Nahrwold. All the awards were bestowed at the two GAA sports par- ties which were held at the end of the first and second semesters. Besides receiving their awards, the girls had a buffet luncheon and participated in games and relays. The biggest event of the GAA year was the Spring Show which was held March 21. The theme, Around the World, was depicted by the dance classes, who performed to music representative of different countries. All gym and dance classes, as well as members of modern dance, tumbling, and GAA participated. The music was played by Sharon Probst and Sharon Possell. All of these activities and events were accomplished under the careful super- vision of Mrs. Alice Keegan, Miss Helen Pohlmeyer, and the GAA officers, Diane Meyer, Nancy Igney, Phyllis Nahrwold, and Donna Zelt, pictured at top of page.
