Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1955 volume:

- f SJ v The log records many pep sessions this past year. The above is an example of one of them. Lettermen pre- sented it before we played North Side in the form of a Congressional investigation to lind out who was Red. The cameraman is Dennis Mclntyre, and the senators seated at the table are, from left to right, Dick Branting- ham, secretary, Tom Pinder, Ellis Ralston, and Norman Miner. Bunko Clarkson is the director. Collecting canned goods for Christmas baskets was a school activity guided by the Lettermen. The good sea- men in the center are, from left to right, Bob Rossiter, jim Fuzy, Bill Gerig, Stu Koch, and Dick Brantingham. I 3flL97 77Ze7fl S South Sides sportsmen who have earned a letter compose this club, led by Mr. Ora Davis. The annual events of Lettermen's are the banquet and the dance. At Christmas time, Lettermen backed the collection of food for the needy. The seniors of the 1955 graduating class wish to ex- press their deep thanks for the patience of the sponsors and advisers of all the clubs at South. These clubs have been a blessing. After the many hard hours of study and concentration in classrooms, the activities after school offer a pleasant relief from the strenuous schedule. A student is given a chance to do something worth- while for the school through these activities. It is through them that the school gets many much-needed articles, 96 such as the record-player and the combination crystal bowl, candlestick holders, and tray. Lettermen's Club collected canned foods for the Christmas baskets for the poor, and most of the clubs, including Lettermen's, presented pep sessions with skits for the entertainment of the entire student body. This is just a brief summary of the many activities the clubs did this past year. The senior class again says thanks for the good work the clubs and advisers have done. 1 i I P Banc! Band members will long remember this year as a great one, for they received smart new gray uniforms. These have been long-awaited and worked for by the band members. One way in which they plan to pay for the uniforms is by the production of an annual band benefit show. The first one, held this year, was a fine show from every standpoint. The wearing of these new uniforms has already proved to be a source of pride to the band members, and they are sure to give us even bigger and better shows in the future. A trip to Muncie this year was another highlight of the band's calendar. Participation in the music assemblies, in several parades, and in the shows at half-time at basketball and football games helped to make this a busy year for them, MR. ROBERT DRUMMOND Brmrlvmzrter Firrt Row, left to right: Charles Owen, Owen Snyder, Jane Dill, Nancy Burton, Marilyn Fowler, Gail Baldwin, Gloria Evans, Joyce Smith, Richard Meissner, Owen Severance, Carolyn Peek, Judith Cook, Sharon Sprunger, Marilyn Beck, Marcia Downhourg second row: Ann Riping, Mary Ann Gulley, Jerry Boerger, Janice Sherman, Norma Klaehn, Leona Moore, Ruth Rainier, June Flaugh, Mike Gilsdorf, John Nagel, Martha Steinbauer, Sue Berlien, Judy Holloway, Linda Jones, Suzanne Eisenhut, Kay Jamie- son, Donna Hoover, John Stephenson, Sandra Disher, Donald Brittson, Judy Christman, Marilyn Tennantg third row: Bill Kamm, David Spears, Keith Kirbach, Dave Redding, David Seaman, Dwight Flowers, Dick Heine, Tom Tate, Bruce Scott, Dick Shock, Margaret Schell, Harry Cochran, Robert Kable, Richard Rudnick, Wayne Elyg fourth row: Dave VonGunten, Carl Simon, Alton White, Dick Colchin, Bill Moore, Jack Young, Jerry Smith, Carl Moser, Don Young, Courtland Clayton, Jim Cox, Dick McBride, Alan Bennington, Pat Harmison, Mar yRose Waulg fifth row: John Shanahan, Tom Winkler, Ron White, Edward Mida daugh, Leonard Sills, Keith Warner, Robert Ryker, Dick Lentz, and Bob Buelow. 97 f- nnapamnmu . -2. wulmlnlur Y 5 CTop7: Front row, left to right: Judy Christman, Emily Bailey, Owen Severance, Richard Meissner, Joyce Smith, Becky Miller, Kay Crosby, Lonny Kimble, Judy Novitsky, Marty Lehman, Ann Sherbondy, Ruth Ann Pifer, Nancy Zeiler, Sandra Disher, Mary Ann Gully, Margaret Schell, Ann Riping, and Marcia Downhour, second row: Jane Felger, Carol Cramer, Suzanne Eisenhut, Donna Hoover, Marilyn Fowler, Nancy Burton, Sharon Sprunger, Judith Cook, Alton White, Dick Colchin, David Von Gunten. Urcbestm Music hath charms, they say, and certainly no one would be more eager to assure you of this than the members of the orchestra. Under the direction of Mr. Robert Drummond, they have had a fine year and have played various kinds of charming music. Not only does this group play for the music assemblies, but also for other school functions and church aH'airs. This year one of their biggest extra programs was the Band Benefit Show, another was the third annual per- formance at Plymouth Congregational Church, put on jointly with the Plymouth Church choir. Besides the complete orchestra, there are numerous smaller groups who perform at other functions. Some of these are the String Ensemble and String Quartets, and the Recorder Society. Both the band and the orchestra are now larger than they have ever been before, with seventy-five members in band and seventy in orchestra. These musical groups are growing for many reasons, one of which is the fine 98 music that is played by the band and orchestra. This year saw the performance of a great variety of music played by both groups, representing almost every period in musical history from pre-Bach times to the present. Some which were especially popular with the players and the listeners were music from Porgy and Bess, Kiss Me Kate, Carousel, and South Pacific, played by the orchestra, The Pines of Rome, Mardi Gras, and Gremlin Ball, played by the band. This year in the band, a new policy was begun. There is now a reserve marching band in addition to the varsity, or regular, marching band. This has already begun to show its effect in the improved shows given by our band. In the orchestra, there are several individuals who are given opportunities to do solo parts. This year, such people were Sharon Huxoll, who played the violin solo, Melodie, at the Spring Concert, and Alton White, who played the trumpet solo in the Haydn Trumpet Con- certo, also in the Spring Concert. - H r--,uf-..a.-.Qi----X--D., -T-l-'ligV.-4r-:- Choir The Concert Choir has had another successful year, with close to fifty outside engagements. Some of these included singing at the Pennsylvania Railroad Christmas party, being guests of Rotary Club at the Woman's Club, and caroling at the Lincoln National Bank. Their other outside programs were given for churches, civic, and social groups. In addition, they gave several fine concerts for the music assemblies and at the Winter and Spring Concerts. The choir soloists this year included Sheila Bradbury and janet VonGunten, sopranosg Shirley Campbell, altog Alan Crill and john Johnson, basses. A sophomore boys' quartet was also formed, consisting of Paul Campbell, Ned Byer, Jim Clauser, and Joe Winder. Head secretaries this year were Jean Ensley and Jane Oyer. MR. S lbeciczl C looir Groups ln the choir, there are always a few people who are especially essential to concerts and special occasions. They are the accompanists, soloists, and the Madrigal group. The Madrigal singers are a group of about I6 select choir members who sing at homes, small business parties, and other places where the entire choir is not needed. Top: This fair foursome of choir members consists of: Pat Hatter and Colleen Liddy at the piano, accompanistsg and Sheila Bradbury and janet VonGunten, soloists. String E fzsenzbles The instrumental music department offers many small string groups for students inter- ested in extra music activities. Some of these are a string ensemble, containing two or more violins, a cello, and pianog and two string quartets, containing a first and second violin, viola, and cello. Middle: janet Sauer, jane and Nancy Zeiler, and Sharon Huxoll compose one of South's string quartets. Recorder Society The South Side Recorder Society, formed last year, is a group who play strange instruments called recorders. These are wooden instruments, somewhat like flutes, which were made in Ger- many. There are several ranges of recorders, from the soprano to the bass, and South has one or more of each kind. McClure, adviser, Nancy Evans, secretary-treasurer, and Dick Brantingham, president. They Revzcbecz' Their Pow' When you walk through a storm . . . We are seniors, and it won't be long until graduation. We have actually come to the end of our voyage through high school, and, as we are preparing to face rougher seas, it is fun to recall the tears and blushes along with the laughs, honors, and good times which have made our four years on the good ship South Side worth remembering. We may have been greenies at the wheel, but we were the first class to hold a Freshman Frolicf' My, were we important! Our sophomore year, we advanced in the rigging and elected class officers to chart the way. Dick Brantingham received the honor of president and went right on presiding the next two years. joan Hat- tendorf, Julia Eastetday, Rosie Roof, Jim Frey, and Kenny Scrogham were also chosen in the line of duty with Miss Edith Rein' and Mr. Robert Petty, advisers, to keep the ship on' the shoals. April Showers, the sophomore party, fell our way, and everyone laughed long and hard at the antics of masters of ceremonies, Guerry McNabb and Ellis Ralston. Sailing on to Port junior, we all enjoyed our first class banquet, Our Hearts Are Young and Gay. This was the carefree year, and We sailed happily through foul weather and fair with the same officers at the helm and Miss Shirley Maloney and Mr. jack Morey to pilot us. We'll never forget those pink and black decorations as we danced through our prom, Street of Dreams. Then came more ship shaking with all-night parties and a breakfast at Foster Park. We are here at last, seniors, and captains of the ship. Never could the voyage have been more fun without all the wonderful mates on board ship. Wfe elected Dick Brantingham, Bill Gerig, Nancy Evans, Rosie Roof, julia Easterday, and joan Hattendorf to the officers' bridge. Wfith Miss Mary Graham and Mr. J. H. McClure to give adult counsel, we started smooth sailing with our Senior Reception and parties afterwards. Then came the Alumni Dance where we got our first tales of college from last year's seniors. The feeling of class unity was uppermost as we all rocked with laughter at our banquet, Down Memory Lane. In April came our senior play, Cuckoos on the Hearth, a mystery-comedy which frightened more than one of us sophisticated seniors. Tom Sites, Mary Val Crouse, Stan Lipp, john johnson, Jane Zeiler, Karen Keller, Colleen Liddy, Norma Jacobs, Tom Arnold, Neal Berryhill, and Bob Ryker made up the cast. Recognition Day and Ivy Day followed in quick suc- cession along with the never, never-to-be-forgotten Senior Prom. We realized the seriousness of the event as we attended the Baccalaureate Sermon, and now we are ready, ready for graduation and to set sail at last. As we are preparing to set sail, we must remember that not all the skies will be blue. Even though our horizons may sometimes seem dark and our ship of life headed for the rocks, always, wherever you go, whatever you do . . . keep your chin up high. 9 :rl .,a. Best National H onor Society Tag Day...that nerve-wracking, breath-taking day which ends four years of hard work. Tag Day, when the ribbons are pinned on seniors selected for National Honor Society. National Honor Society is com- posed of those seniors from the upper third of their class who have qualified in Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. Not more than fifteen per cent of the grad- uating class is chosen for member- ship. The teachers nominate, and a committee chooses. A student must be outstanding in the class- room and extra-curricular activities to be elected to the society. Every spring a banquet is held for the honored seniors and their parents, and the National Honor Society pin is presented to each new member. One important goal achieved! 11 f-L--f dr- 511:-1 auunnssn- fe-1.4.1111-1 1. 4 oe. .Y -Q.. The inexperience cost them two important opening contests with Mishawaka and Indianapolis Shortridge, in which they were able to accumulate only a combined total of 20 points to 87 points for their conquerors. The Green were then beaten in four straight tilts before finally being able to stop Concordia, 19-OI South then wound up their season losing a mud-soaked battle to city champions, Central Catholic, 27-0. Head coach jack Bobay had a better squad than the record indicates but inexperience cost heavily. Couriers of the Dee With eighteen seasons of track coaching experience here at South, Head Coach George Collyer proved to the fans at South and to the rival city schools that the Green were not to be counted out on the cinders this year. Working with one of the most enthusiastic group of boys ever, Mr. Collyer gave to South the kind of ath- letes needed to come through in the tight clinches. The Green pulled several big surprises during the sea- son, which started with South losing one meet to Elkhart, 54 273 to 54 175. South knocked down Kokomo, 68 172 to 40 172, before entering a three-way meet with North Side and Cenrtal, and ending up in third place, some 32 172 points behind the victorious Red- skins, with scores of North, 75, Central, 45 1725 South, 40 172. it was in the form of the Third Annual North Side Re- lays in which city host North was the pre-meet favorite. On that afternoon, South not only went out and defeated North Side and Central, but also Lima Central, Dayton Wright, New Haven, Central Catholic, Concordia, and Culver with a score of 64 172. This meet will long be remembered by the Archer fans and by the athletes as well, especially Dick Lentz, Bunko Clarkson, Tom Pinder, Bob Wright, Roger An- derson, Terry Miller. and others.
