It seems as if only yesterday we were wide-eyed, uncertain, little Freshmen with so much to see and even more to learn. But green as we were, we had One Foot in Heaven. Somehow we mana ed to survive that first hectic ear. f ng Y When we made the bi ste to So homores, we elected our g' P U first class officers. With Fred Au s ur er as resident Y 4 , U g P g P , Nancy Kierspe, vice-presidentg Susie Noble, secretary-treas- urerg Martha Ritter, Jim McGraw, and Charlie Gibbs, social council, and Miss Lucy Osborne and Mr. Jack Morey, ad- visers, we were prepared for a wonderful year. Things started out with a bang . . . our Sophomore Scandal party featured bigger-than-life scarecrows of various class- mates. Everyone will remember that party as the successful beginning of our class's social events. And before you could say HR. Nelson Snider, we were upperclassmen-juniors, to be exact. But we weren't con- tent just to be traditionally jaunty . . . we wanted to take a real part in school affairs and to show that we had gained poise and ability to cooperate in the past two years. We showed what our class could do by putting on our novel 16 Junior Banquet, Underwater Wonderland, and that never- to-be-forgotten prom, Stairway to the Stars. That year we chose Fred again as president, Jim McGraw, vice-presi- dent, Charlie Gibbs, secretary-treasurer, Susie Noble, Mar- tha Ritter, and Nancy Kierspe, social council. They were ably assisted by our advisers, Miss Shirley Maloney and Mr. jack Morey. Now we are Seniors. This is the year we have dreamed about ever since we can remember. But it has gone much too fast, and we are surprised to find ourselves wishing at times that we could live it over again. As time goes by, we will realize more and more how much the past four years have meant to us. Never again will we be quite as carefree and conhdent about what the future holds as during this last year, as we whirled gaily through the Senior Reception, the Alumni Dance, our Thru The Yearsn banquet, the Senior play, Our Miss Brooks, Ivy Day, Recognition Day, the Senior Dance, Baccalaureate, and finally, Commencement. Now, molded by four years of wise guidance and armed with a host of happy memories, we go out into the wide world to seek our destiny. hw National Honor SOCi6Q! And judging from its past efforts, such as the unior Banquet and The Street of Dreams, the unior Prom, this class is really going to go places To help them do just that, to the right are the junior of'l'icers and advisers. Seated from left to right are julia Easterday, secre tary-treasurer, oan Hattendorf, vice-president, Dick Branting ham, presidentg and Miss Shirley Maloney, adviser, standing are jim Frey and Ken Scrogham, social councilg Mr. ack Morey adviser, and Roselyn Roof, social council. Next picture down, Mary Val Crouse and Jim Frey are showing the form which won them the title of being the best dancers in the junior class. Mary Val also was voted the cutest girl At the extreme left of the next picture is oan Hattendorf who won the honor of being the girl most likely to succeed and girl who has done most for the school. Next to her are Donna Hengsteler and Norm Miner, who are taking time away from their athletic practice which makes them best athletes of their class. That bored-looking individual to the right has, according to the polls, the best personality in the junior class. His name, oh--Ken Scrogham The two smiling so sweetly at each other in the next picture are Nancy Evans and Dick Brantingham, who were voted the cutest couple. Nancy also beams with that best personality Dick won the envied title of handsomest boy. What a talented couple! ane Zeller and oan Nadmg lower right look mighty pleased about being chosen best musician and best speaker. However, Bryan Boggess is not resting on his laurels but is concentrating on how to live up to his titles of the boy who has done most for the school and the boy most likely to succeed. Bill Gerig demonstrates why he was chosen the most perfect gentleman to Julia Easterday, the most perfect lady, in the picture in the lower left. 42 ,Q T Q P1 B E, U5 ru ... 0 gn ,Z 'E Z? The equipment managers are well known by all varsity ath- letes. They are the-behind-the scenes men. Their duties con- sists of srenciling numbers on equipment, handing out clean practice clothes, keeping first aid supplies, putting lines on the football field, and keeping rec- ords of all shoes and uniforms. The 1954 equipment managers are left to right: Richard Bauer, Roger Bauer, Tom Graham, Mr. Ralph McClain, head equipment manager, George McClain, Don Dowty, David Clark, and Roger Foote. 58 Wayne Scott A tlalelic Manager Wayne Scott, better known as Scotty , has given us another year of his excellent direction. I-lis earnestness, personality, knowledge, and helpful attitude have truly made him qualify for his position. We all like to hear Scotty sing while he is working. Scotty has a tre- mendous task of assisting the coaches and also of preparing schedules and purchasing equip- ment. IX . WV 5 nl tx KJ Seated, left to right, first row, are B. Henninger, E. James, L. Gridmen Finish With 50-50 Season Coach Jack Bobay began the difficult task of putting to- gether his first grid team in the hot August days before school started last fall. No one knew then just how the season would end, but the four-won, four-lost record was brought about in this manner. The team lost its first two games to Indianapolis Shortridge and Jackson, Michigan, but bounced back with two impressive victories over Central and Gary Froebel. Then they suffered losses to Mishawaka and North Side. Again they came back to conquer Concordia and Central Catholic in the last two games. Great teamwork was shown both on and off the playing field. Every boy gave his supreme effort toward a team victory and not for his own benefit. The senior class contributed a great deal of strength to the team. Eighteen of this year's twenty touchdowns were scored by Seniors. These were made as follows: Fred Augspurger, 3 touchdowns, Dave Grieser, lg Kent Horton, lg Jack Kern, 65 Cyril Laycoff, 15 Jerre McManama, 4, and Bill Patty, 2. Underclassmen who scored touchdowns are Dick Brantingham and Chuck Benz, who each made one. The Kelly grid team was strengthened by the speed and agility exhibited by the ball carriers and the excellent execu- tion of its plays. Snappy passing, classy catches, and plenty of driving power all contributed to a very successful foot- ball season. Senior team members who will be graduated this June are Fred Augspurger, David L. Davis, Dave Gtieser, Char- lie Gibbs, Bob I-Ienninger, Kent Horton, Jack Kern, Cyril Laycoff, Jim McGraw, Jet-re McManama, Bill Patty, and Dave Sutter. Starting off the season with a nine-game winning Central. triumphed over Richmond and former state champ Muncie The squad was aided heavily by the performance of its games, including the Holiday Tournament at Muncie and three Sectional games. Consistent winning and scattered losses left the cagemen holding a record of sixteen wins and four losses at the end of the regular season. Two of these losses were to North Side, one to Central, and one to Huntington. One of the high points of the season was receiving the coveted Holiday Tournament Trophy when the Archers senior nermen, which numbered eight in all. There were not necessarily any outstanding individuals, but agile guards like Dave Grieser, Bob Rossiter, and Bill Gerig contributed greatly to the fine performance of the team in the last live games of the season. The team worked as a unit designed to give the best re- sults possible. The right attitude, plenty of hustle, and an abundance of ability were familiar characteristics. Few realize the hard work put into a school yearbook or when this work is begun. During the summer Mary Long began by planning The Totem dummy. She brought together all of her efforts and ability with the help of all of the stall: members to make this yearbook the best of all. The photographers have carefully tried to capture in photography every precious moment during the past year so that everyone will better remember South Side in its gaiety and more serious moments. 76 The other photographers who provided the pictures for this annual are Don Dowty, Ronald Schultz, and Bill Gilsclorf. While the Totem was being assembled and perfected, the circulation staff kept a strict account of the money involved and a record of all of the sales for The Totem. Check and double check was the motto of our copy editor, Barbara Stobaugh. She never gave up the tedious task of reading the copy for errors. Activity, a dull hum, and a touch of laughter were all found in the Totem office during this year of hard work. Everyone was unfamiliar at first with the task of producing a yearbook, but with a lot of satisfaction in a job well done, we present to you the 1954 book of Nlemories . Band. .. Any spectator at the basketball and football games can well remember the band's outstanding performances this year under the direction of Mr. Robert Drummond. The band put on some spectacular marching demonstrations at both games. One performance in particular we all remember was the parody the band introduced for the North-South game to the tune of Ten Little Indians. At Christmas, the band formed a bell, a candle, and a candy cane with colored lights symbolizing the season. One of their very impressive and beautiful formations was the American flag which was symbolic of the serious performances that the band is ca- pable of presenting. To the tune of Anchors Away an airplane began slowly moving down the gym floor. This was quite unique on and off. The majorettes also took part in these demonstrations. Members of the band practiced many long hours in pre- paring their patterns. They practiced on Saturday after- noons, at noon, and after school to perfect these routines. The band also participated in the music assemblies and in the winter and spring concerts. Sally Jo Wilson, a Senior, has played at several school functions on her ma- rimba. Other added features the band has are the drum- mers and castanet players. Some selections would not be complete without them. The band members had the task of representing South Side in several of the parades. The parades this year were for Memorial Day, Armistice Day, and the United Fund. They were tired at the end of each journey, but they made ycblooked very real. There was even a taill light blinking a good showing for our school. , 51 cf its , f Mui.
