Perhaps leaving South Side at the end of four years seems to bring a touch of regret and sorrow, but finishing our senior year, with all of its activities to keep us busy, is really something to look forward to. All through our four years in South Side, we have always had successful events. Re- member Arabian Nights , our Sophomore Partyg Going Our Way , our Junior Banquet, and most of all that very special and very wonderful junior Prom, Sentimental Journeyv? Closely following this successful event was Senior Ban uet Throu h the Years , which took us back to our freshman da s and deeds q 1 g Y v and brought us up to date, with a glimpse of the future added. In April our Senior Play, Young Barry , was a big success. To end all of our hard work and good times came Recognition Day, closely followed by Senior Dance and finally Commencement. We are ready now to go on to other things, but we shall always remember our four years here as some of the best ones in our lives, and always remember our wonderful senior year. The faculty also has its poll of the senior class. He also received laurels hy being voted most likely to suc- ceed, the boy who has done l110St for the school, and the hov with the hest personality. That infectious smile of Carol Denton, next in line on rhe top row, really shows why her ora- tions always win. Now Liz, how are you ever go- ing to succeed, as your classmates think you will, if you donlt lceep your eyes on the files? Now doesn't Tom Selecter real- ly loolc gallant piclcing up sweet .lo Piattas hoolcs in the lower left- hand picture? Of course, she's the most perfect lady and he's the most perfect gentleman. Tomls also the most handsome of the fellows. In the middle picture, Nlath- Science prexy Milt Bronstein is most lilcely to succeed among the boys. Industriously doing the most for their heloved Alma Mater are Boh johnson and Evelyn Will, who are the juniors most lilcely to succeed, so say the polls. In the center: A Study in Eating might well he the title of this snap: George Fig,' Newton, who has the cutest nickname. Fig also has the ltest personality. Bottom left: Some worms are forgotten altogether, and others are seldom noticed hut the junior class says that the class hoolcworm is worthy of mentiong and that honorahle fellow is Richard May. Next in line is that wit of all wits, none other than your favorite clown, juniors, Boh Richards. Trying to free her hand from that friendly handshake is Georgia Dreislnach, who is tops when it comes to personality. In the spring, the juniors delight in malc- ing plans for their annual dance. Here are shown four of the girls resting after spending much time in decorating for the coming event. The speakers' table at the junior Ban- quet usually proves very interesting. From left to right we find Norman Greiner, Sharon Langohr, and, Facing us, Mr. Sidell, Beverly Bain, Bill Seidel, Nlr. Gilbert, Georgia Dreisbach, Mr. Abbett, Miss Pit- tenger, George Newton, Mr. Snider, and Mrs. Abbett. In the South Side stadium the band and the twirlers give a demonstration of their ability to parade. The Medicine Show proved quite enter- taining to the students, and The Hungry Fivel' is one good reason for this being true. In the picture are shown Bob Rodey, clarinetg David Double, tromboneg Frank Bidlaclc, bassg Diclc Pepple, trumpetg Diclc Norris, clarinet. 78 re nfoge .giuelen fa The basketball games are always fung and to add to the entertainment of the evening there is often an after-game dance. As you can see hy this picture, the students enjoyed themselves at the Meterites dance. Another scene of the Nleterites After-Game dance. Along with the other good features of the junior Banquet is the food. Don't you agree with me? Here they are lining up for self- service at the cafeteria counter. The sophomores also have an annual event to which to look forward-the Sophomore Party. See how industriously they clo their work. Christmas is the season for festivity, and the South Side Choir takes advantage of the oc- casion. Here they are shown doing a little singing at their party. 79 5 9 'fx J in K QT , MH aff bg aww- . If Last spring Miss Harvey announce1 the positions of editor, circulation manager, and business manager for The 1946 Totem. lfrom that time on, the.e staff members have been worlc- ing hard and long to publish your 1946 Tolem. Other positions were filled by those seniors who volunteered their services to aid in publishing their own class annual. The result was a hard-worlcing and well-coordinated staff. Some positions called for more worlc than others, and many students aided others in getting their worlc done when their position did not call for extra effort. Among these positions were those of editor, cir- culation manager, and senior editor, which were filled by Don lireimeier, Anita 1.inlc, and Gene Hahn. Doing more than assistant circulation manager needed to do was Beth Klop- fenstein. In the summer a theme is piclced out, The theme for the 1946 Totem is 1'Let Us Strive On. This phrase was talcen from Abraham Lincolnls Second Inaugural Address, an address which should be well lcnown by all of us. The theme has a current interest and meaning to all the peoples of this earth as well as to us here. This theme is portrayed by the various divisions of the book. Ar the time stafi pictures were taken, Barbara Parker was out of town and did not get her picture talcen. Listed as an office manager, Barbara did much more than this po- sition called for. Pat Connett, also an ofiice man- ager, tried her hand at a few stories. Correne Roclchill wrote GAA stories in addition to fulfill- ing her office duties. Ruth Miller managed the office during the Hfrh periorl. Craig Glass carried the big job of photography by himself for a time. Many pictures in the book were also taken, in Craig,s absence, by Don Breimeier. Later in the year, jim Palmer ofiered his services as Craig,s official assistant. The class editors, in addition to Gene Hahn, senior class editor, were Barbara I-lyman, junior class editor, Ruth Lowry, sophomore class editor, and Lois Sites, freshman class editor. Tusie Pohlmeyer and Beth Klopfenstein aided Anita in her big job as circulation manager. Don Schoenherr was a very willing worlcer on The Totem. As sports editor, he wrote many line stories. Georgia Dreisbach, a very able writer, was piclced to write material on South Side scenics. Such stories as those covering war activities :md the yearboolc were written by Don Breimeier. .SDOLJA .Stole .Q4 gcognizecl jar loeaLerA Per usual, Archer students came through with innumer- ahle honors in speech, Because there are other activities to he mentioned in the Totem, only a few of the very outstanding spealcers can herein he shown and mentioned. C4000 QXNLLCA in ommunify piaaure The South Side Vesper Choir has completed another husy concert season. During the year the choir, under the direction of Mr. Lester I-Iostetler, has presented about fifty programs for various social and civic organizations. The repertoire of the choir consists of approximately sixty popu- lar, secular, sacred, and classical songs. Among those who have contributed their talents to make this a successful year are LaDonna Sprunger, assistant pianist, Elizabeth Mossman, Dorcas MacKay, Bill Holz- warth, also pianists, and Don Wriglit and Virginia Eme, secretaries. Eldora Liddy, contralto, has also done out- standing worlc. Highlights of the year were concerts at the Peabody Nlemorial Home and rhe Church of rhe Brethren in North Manchester, Indiana, and rhe annual spring concert held in South Side's gym. During the Easter season, the choir sang 98 at the First Methodist Church and the Paramount Theater. Christmas programs were presented at the Womenls Club and the West Creighton Avenue Christian Church. The choir also performed for the Simpson Methodist Church, Masonic Temple, First Evangelical Church, and the Parent- Teachers' Association. The purpose of the choir is to teach poise in public performance and give a thorough knowledge of music. The department is divided into two divisions, training chorus and concert choir. Promotion from chorus to choir is based on the student's musical ability and willingness to work. The music room was recently redecorated to suit the needs of the department, and a grand piano was purchased. These improvements have made it possible for the choir to pro- duce better concerts, and certainly South Side can point with pride to the Vesper Choir. - 'Y 5' Qi, f - xfx K xx, 5 I lr ti 55- ' fn . mlafi ite- 9:5 L I . , J . .4 '1 V 'x AWN -, Hx- I I ! .QQ af? f I ,. The top picture is of the North-South game. The second pic- ture was taken when South played Central. The last two pictures were taken when the Fighting Irish of Central Catholic met South Side. Many Archers came out to witness the games held in some of the fairest weather our football seasons have witnessed in years. runnerg Slingin' Bob McClain, running either end and passing for many touchdownsg and hard-driving Dick Ellenwood carrying the brunt of the attack. The Green's powerful backs would have had little success if it weren't for the brains of the team, sig- nal-calling Wick Disler. Although the Kelly backs deserve much credit, their efforts would have been in vain if it weren't for such stellar linemen as center Joe Fields, who was nominated the No. 2 center in the whole stateg Gene Holtrey and Big Ed Roth at the tackle slotsg Jack Reed and Dick McMahan, two mighty fine guards who stopped many of the opponents' offensive at- tacks, and diminutive Keith Miller and lanky Tom Selecter, two great ends who will go down in Archer record books as two of the best. Yes, South Side has a right to be proud of this year's team which piled up a mighty fine season for Archer prestige on the gridiron. 104 I1 we GHCLPCILUOOCI Ending one of the greatest seasons in South Side history which nearly saw an Archer sectional crown, the Green netters compiled a mighty line won-lost record of nineteen and three. Graduating from this year's squad are such stellar performers as Bragg, Garrison, and Gidley fSouth's Big Threej , of the hrst five, and Beery, Selecter, and Disler of the second team. john Bragg was the No. I punch on the Archer team as the husky forward dumped in 190 points in regular season games. Bob Garrison was No. 2 man finishing up the season close behind Bragg. Bob's tricky passes gave many baskets to teammates who shook themselves loose under the hoop. Dude Gidley was the handsome, curly-headed lad who really popped them in down at Huntington. Dude is a smooth floor man, and a deadly set-shot artist. Long Tom Selecter, Dick Beery, and Willis Disler were the reserve power Scotty depended on when the regulars failed to get anything started, and these three lads fired the team up with their fight and savvy. The Archers ran a victory string at the season's outset to nine games, but Murray Mendenhalfs Tigers took the Green into camp at the North Side gym 34 to 26. Almost two weeks later, the Archers ran into a tough Lebanon outfit and the Scottmen were set back by a 35-to-33 score. The Kellys took their last live games of the regular season, and among these five rested the Central Tigers. South got a pretty fair draw in the sectional tour- nament, but failed to stop those Central Tigers and Bob Milton. Central continued through regional play, super-regional, and then, in the final game, lost to the Anderson Indians for the state championship. In the sectional tournament, the Archers drubbed New Haven, 33 to 19, Huntertown, '51 to 24, and North Side in a bitter game, 36 to 33. South Side's hats are off to a mighty Hne team that brought to Archerland a host of glory. Top to bottom: This action shot was taken on the South Hoor at the North-South game.
