Youth Speaksf' over WHBQ was one of the newest and most unique programs of interest to school groups during the football season. Reese Wells organ- ized the sport editors from the other high schools ai Early Maxwells request. Mr, Maxwell acted as spon- sor for the program that was a weekly summary of all the prep sports. Another member of the staff, Lois Rast, also won cityvwide recognition Lois won top honors in the MidfSouth Typist Club twice. Fourteen of the Staff members were elected to the National Honor Society. They arei Labe Scheinberg, Mildred Roberts, Auben Burkhart, Elizabeth Vick, Russell Bryant, Betty Watts, Dorothy Davis, Mary Rose Smith, Ianice Wender, Charles Moon, Alfred Marko- witz, Alpha Carothers, Iack Lutz, and Yvonne Mc- Gehee. One of the editors-in-chief of The Triple S , Labe Scheinberg, made the second honor in the senior class and also won the S125 scholarship fund offered by Southwestern. Russell Bryant, the president of the Club, made the first honor. Four of the seven members elected by the senior class to the Scrapper Staff were on The Triple S Staff. They are Russell Bryant, Mildred Roberts, Betty Watts, and lack Lutz, At the meeting in April, plans were made for the annual banquet which was held at the Parkview Hotel April 27. Russell Bryant, the president, acted as master of ceremonies and introduced each person with a clever poem written by Reese Wells. After the banquet the members of The Triple S Staff, the Scrapper Staff, and of the Iournalism Club with their invited friends at the banquet were guests of Miss Allenworth's at the Memphis Little Theatre. Tlie faculty members included Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Gnuse, Mrs, Mary B. McGoldrick, Miss Mary Miller, and Miss Mildred Keith. Gloria Shefsky, the associate editor in 1942, gave a humorous reading. Miss Allensworth then presented journalism pins to Mildred Roberts, Labe Scheinberg, Auben Burkhart, Reese Wells, Ianice Wender, lean' nette Terrell, Iean Renardet, Margaret Warlick, Dor- othy Davis, and Ioe Cocke. The money made from The Triple S sales is used for a scholarship fund which will help some student from South Side to attend college next fall. Only four seniors took the competitive examination for this scholarship: Russell Bryant, Labe Scheinberg, Auben Burkhart and Alfred Markowitz.
