Miss Katherine Craven afvards city state and national prizes to Russell Bryant l942 v inner in e ax contest sponsored by Auxiliary United Spanish War Veterans The subiect of his es ay wa lnfluence of the Spanish American War a Reflected in Recent Attitude of the United States Toward World Affair SOUTH SIDE HRT The Art Departments annual exnibit Nas h ld at Brooks Memorial Art Gallery from M r h 26 to April 5, The exhibit consisted of work in color and design commercial art plastic design and costume design, The color and design class exhibited its plaid designs as studies in proportions and textile design? with motifs of birds and flowers. The commercial art class had a display of letter- ing original advertising layouts labels and candy wrappers linoleum cuts stencil designs and posters, Much of the work in this class was utilized i school projects. Linoleum cuts illu trated copies f 'The Triple S ' stenciled menu covers were sent to the Navy at Millington on Thanksgiving and Christ- mas football posters advertised football games and the malaria control posters displayed the first and second prizes won in the Howard- Kraus. contest, l .' . un . The plastic design class had linoleum, plaster soap and wood carvings and . group of unusual egg tsmpra paintings. Most outstanding in this egg tempra group were four compositions of four authentic birds. Thee proj- ects were done in collaboration with the South Side Audubon Society and were by: Iimmie Nix who paint- ed a gardinalt Ralph Bigelo v v ho painter a parrot' William Fowler 'fno painted .fran and Milton Phillips who painted the state oird and flower.
