GOLF South Side selected four boys to represent the school in the city league. Playing his fourth year on the team, Walter Squirrel Simmons and lohn Reneau, Newton Baskin, Har- vey Binkley composed the South Side squad. Alternates were C. I. Reneau and Eugene Collier. At the half way mark the team was third 1n standing Three of the four boys on the squad re turn for action next year TRACK South Sides track team came third in the city meet Bill Huber lack Young and lack Farris were the boys who made a very good showing 1n the fast competition Other boys on the squad were Bedford Calhoun Iohn Clark Iohn Donovan Bob Stanley Carl Webb Flem Williams Blake Boyer Ray Pittman Clifford Turner D D Kinney and Raymond Boat man Most of the boys return for action next year BOXING The South Side team hard hit by inluries received in the school eliminations placed only five men in the l94l finals held at the Y M C A Though they did not retain the crown the Scrappers ran a close second to Messick High who won the Championship for the first time The team was composed of the following boys Bruce lohnson Billy Floyd Zane Wells Sammy Berzansky Iimmy Nix lack Young Marion Cook Paul Sharpe Frank Webb Frank Davis and George Roberts Of these boys Bruce lohnson Frank Webb and Frank Davis won the Championship in their division WRESTLING With ferocious groans and grunts four stalwart athletes signed up to represent South Side Carl Webb Iohn Wilkinson and Ralph Dubrovner into tip top shape in daily training ses sions Keep lifting that dumbbell you dumbb lll One two three trotl And even though the team was incomplete and wholly inexperienced South Side placed third in the city Carl Webb husky little flyweight won the championship in his division by smearing a Humes opponent on the mat in eight minutes lohn Wilkinson bantamweight dropped his bout to a Tech grappler a veteran of four or five years Ralph Strangler D brovner chased his opponent around for five minutes before giving up the ghost Captain larnes Reese although struggling all the way succumbed finally to a C B C star However the points these boys amassed were enough to enable the school t garner third placelaurels first restlino honors on by South Side in four years A0 1 ' Y I - in the annual Y.
