COACH EWING AND HIS 1940 SCRAPPERS FIRST ROW LEFT TO RIGHT Frank Brewer Winboume Hicks Clyde Holley Irmmie Nix Iohn Thompson lack Darden Iohn Reneau Houston Douglas Billy Hutt William Phillips SECOND ROW Zane Wells IAsst Mgrl Iames Blackwell KMgrI Wesley Acee Iohn Donovan Paul Sharpe Manon Cook Bob Shelton Ed Feeble Iohn Moms lack Young Ken Sxgman Frank Davrs Irvin Irby Fntz Wexgandt Iohn Bird I C Walker Bedford Calhoun THIRD ROW Porter Chappell tAsst Coachl Eddxe Bndges Fred Frazier Ioseph Columbus Ray Pxttman Louis Wells Thedford Wilson Billy Callxcott Iohn Clark George Roberts Earl W1lson Iack Farris Leonard Patterson Raymond Boatman Onon Blanton Preston McAlexander Harns Green Raymond Clme Robert Carothers Blake Boyer fMgrl Coach Ewmg FOURTH ROW Thomas Lovmggood Iohn Lee I D Hrggmbotham Wendell Cofer Herbert Ballentme Iack Carter Ed Evans Robert Stokes I W Arnett Bernard Mayer Frank Vlebb Flem Wrlllams Ioe Dard 1 FOOTBALL The Southside football machine paced by Captain Squirrel Simmons came second in Prep League com petition for the second consecutive season Opening their season with a very impressive victory over North Little Rock High School the Scrappers were in mid season form in defeating the heavy Arkansas team 21 to 6 Returning home with victory number one safely under their helmets the Scrappers then disposed of C B C in the fxrst prep league tilt 13 to O for victory number two Then the Scrappers went to Crump Stadium the next week to be stung by the Tech Yellowlackets 24 to 13 for the only League defeat of the season Next the Scrappers yourneyed up to Dyersburg Tennessee to defeat the home team 12 to 6 in a very brilliant game won in the last half by a dashing eighty yard run by the Squirrel The Scrapper line led by George Roberts Billy Callicutt and Iohn Clark played an outstanding game were pressed against the wall but the sturdy line opened up a hole and Simmons went fifty five yards to pay dirt lack Farris then made a spectacular catch of Simmons pass for the second touchdown Next week South Side engaged Messick at the Fairgrounds and came home with a 32 to 0 victory ln this game South Side used three teams against the Panthers ln an encounter with the l-lumes H1 Tigers South Side continued this dazzling brand of football to overwhelm the Tigers 12 to U Louis Wells small but husky right end caught a touchdown pass in the end zone which the experts considered one of the best catches made in Crump Stadium during the year Then came the never to be forgotten tilt with the Deshler High Tigers of Tuscumbia Alabama Not only was South Side unfortunate in losing the game 20 to 14 but also the services of Captain Simmons on account of a broken arm South Side minus the leadership of their captain spun the Golden Tornado team of Union City around for a 19 to O whirlwind victory in Fairgrounds Stadum Ken Sigman Bobby Shelton and Frank Davis followed Squirrels footsteps toward the goal line The South Side boys went into the Turkey Day Classic seeking the scalp of the Central Warriors avenge last years defeat which barred them from the League Championship Central was leading 3 to O by means of a field goal in the second quarter The boys came back a 'ie half saying that three points could never down a Scrapper eleven Frank Davis made that statement come true Davis took a pass from Shelton and behind perfect interference from the Scrapper forward wall raced to pay dirt and glory Bugger Red kicked the extra point and South Side won 7 to 3 The Scrapper forward wall was led by All Memphis George Roberts and guard Leonard Patterson When 1 came to pass defense and line backing observers declared that the Job turried in by Iohn Heime Clark was the finest of the season South Side boys who won All Memphis recognition were Walter Simmons Iohnny Donovan George Roberts and Iohn Morris The team loses twelve letter men by graduation They are Simmons Shelton Mor TIS Young Roberts Earl Wilson Thedford Wilson Orion Blanton Thomas Lovinggood Louis Wells lack Farris and Raymond Boatman 61 South Side then won a hard fought struggle from Catholic High, 14 to 6.
