CLASS PRCPI-IECY Thts 1S statlon WMPS We take you now to the South S1de Hxgh Aud1tor1um where Iames l-Ixght br1Il1ant young seventeen year old semor w1ll soon demonstrate h1s Hrghtrme Ma ch1ne which he clatms w1ll project one twelve years 1nto the future Referrlng to h1s cr1t1cs who have declared that hts 1dea ts utterly fantasttc the youthful 1nventor recently remarked Umph kapf let them scoff I-Ie who laughs last heh heh IS slow to get the Ioke you know The funny papers have a machme that takes one back 1nto the past but look forwardl I always sayl Well 1n a few m1nutes we shall know the truth about th1s mach1ne Walt here s Mr H I Farrtsh sc1ence teacher and Mr I W Rlchardson hlstory teacher dlscusslng the event Let s l1sten He s a m1ghty f1ne boy yes strl Yes but he needs to be pushed once IH a whlle to keep h1m off the rocks But now the t1me has come A profound hush re1gns as Ehzabeth Thur mond IS seated on the w1re bench The sw1tch IS thrownl When I f1rst stepped 1nto the machlne I had a forebodlng that the 1nvent1on was doomed to fallure My heart seemed to sklp a beat when I saw Iames pull the swltch I began to feel dxzzy my bram UI reeled The audttorlum Spun crazlly around Suddenly I found myself unharmed standtng 1n front of a magnlflcent f1ve story bu1ld1ng I saw to my surprtse that 1t was the remodeled South S1de Hlgh School and as I gazed curlously I saw Elolse Donaldson Charles Hassenfratz and Iean McGonag1ll emerge from the entrance I solemnly asked them rf they were go1ng to school and as though laughmg at some notous Ioke Iean told me that they had been teachxng for SIX years and that Mr Iohn Baker was now prlnclpal at South S1de chtef houn as GSSISIGDIS Mr Gnuse they told me was presldent of the UHIVGTSIIY of M1ssour1 MISS Tharp was execuhve of the Natlonal Howard Krauss Soclety MISS I..1ttle was dean of Vassar Col saw a huge three decker super bus wh1zz1ng down the street and so mutterlng a hur r1ed good bye lraced across the street and caught the bus out of cur1os1ty I asked the dr1ver who of all people was Ioe Columbus where he was go1ng l-Ie Sdld that the bus was gomg through town ZUF Street I pard my fare She told me that she Boatman and that on hfs and that the bus lrne ended at V1olet Grlfflths Plaza Courts on and sat down beslde none other than M1ldred Beeman was the prxvate secretary of the mayor of Memphls Raymond secretarxal staff were Dorothy Dlllard Betty W1lbourne and Edlth Iohnson Rlchard Peters was Pol1ce Commlssloner and Allen Scrogglns was probate Iudge I asked Mlldred 1f she had heard anythlng about our classmates of 41 She looked at me strangely Say have you been out of the country or someth1ng'P Dont tell me you havent heard that Sam Berzansky managed by our old fr1end Louts Wells won the l1ght werght boxmg champ1onsh1p that Gene Penny and Raymond McCrory are mak1ng a good w1ll tour m the Spamsh Amerrcan countr1es to promote Blake Boyer s b1g Pan Amer1can Un1on Program? D1dnt you know that the Ladles Home Magaz1ne edlted by Ruth Bryant won the Roberlme Allen Magaz1ne Apprecratlon Award for 1952 and that M1lton Addxngtons latest best seller Green Memory won the Puhtzer Pnze? I confessed I hadnt heard about the success of our classmates Wh1le she was telhng me about the new Amerlcan I'I1story book wrltten by V1v1an Ieter and Betty Hamllton and Our Soclal Problems by Iack I-Iol1f1eld she d1scovered that she had passed her stop Before she left she told me to be sure and drop 1n at the radlo statlon WOW owned by Thedford Wrlson As we sped along I nottced that the lvfemphls streets were numbered now At 6R Street the man 1n front of me got off and I p1cked up a copy of the Memph1s News that he had left on the seat I brlefly glanced at the European news Carl Webb and W C McClelland ambassadors to England had been trylng to strengthen d1plomat1c relatlons and to enforce the foretgn pollcy of the Unlted States set up by Ralph Dubrovner Senator from Tennessee Thrs news scoop was wrrtten by the forexgn correspondent R1chard McDan1el I saw the names of Ralph I-layes and Thomas Lov1nggood 1n the by hnes of the other fore1gn news I read about the Ph1ll1ps and Ph1ll1ps Travel Agency of Parts the largest 1n the world go1ng bankrupt But I knew that Melba and Ilene would soon be on thelr feet agatn C I 38 legeg and Coach Ewing was head coach at Alabama with Iames Blackwell and Bedford Cal- I - - . . . -
