HISTORY Contlnued December 1940- There surely were a number of nervous anx1ous boys and g1rls awa1t1ng the trme for the Honor Soclety 1n1t1at1on serv1ce to begm thxs morn1ng December 17 I beheve that the serv1ce was the most or1g1nal and 1mpress1ve one that has ever been presented at South S1de The ten students 1n1t1ated 1nto the chapter were Mlldred Elmore Carolyn Craddock Ethel L1ght body Margaret Br1dges Bonme R1ley Fred Creasy Z E Rutherford R1chard R1dd1ck Ray mond Boatman and Ralph Dubrovner February 1941 Competmg agarnst s1x Memphts h1gh schools South Sxdes r1fle team won second place honors ln the C1ty Rtfle Matches Thomas Campbell veteran of last year and captaln of the team was yudged the best marksman1n the c1ty These boys placed f1rst among the 27 southeastern schools 1n the recent Corps Area R O T C shoot The sen1ors on the team are Thomas Campbell B1lly Hudson and Raymond Boatman ln a school wlde electlon conducted by the Trlple S George Roberts and Betty Ham1l ton won the t1tles of Mr and Mtss South S1de The Best C111Z6U of the 1941 graduat1ng class accordlng to the grrls of the Senlor Class and the Faculty 15 V1rg1n1a Thurrnond As representat1ve of the Memphrs Commodore Perry Chapter D A R V1rg1n1a w1ll go to Nashv1lle for the state contest Two South S1de entrles ran away w1th top honor 1n the typlng contest sponsored by the M1ller Hawklns Secretar1al School Z E Rutherford who has won second and tl'11rd places 1n two prevrous contests won flrst place for speed R1chard R1dd1ck won f1rst pr1ze for accuracy March 1941 A happy exc1ted group of boys and g1rls 1nclud1ng the Senlors Kathryn Totty Nancy Fowler Norma Barner Betty Ham1lton and Roy Adams were pr1v1leged to attend the South SIX members of our graduatlng class Fred Creasy Ralph Dubrovner Ruth Bryant Mar garet Brxdges Elorse Donaldson and V1v1an Ieter took the college apt1tude test grven at Southwestern College Ralph Dubrovner won the scholarshlp Apnl 1941 There certalnly was a change rn the appearance of the twelfth graders after each had donned hrs K1d Day Costume and had assumed h1s most baby1sh ways at the K1d Day Party at Gaston Communrty Center Nancy Fowler all decked out tn a baby dress and bonnet w1th a rattler was Judged the best dressed g1rl and Iarnes H1ght who wore kmckers w1th a brg red patch on them a loud lrtterbug shlrt a huge red t1e and a skull cap was the best dressed boy Everyone 1nclud1ng the chaperons had a perfectly lovely trme May 1941 May the last month of our school year began w1th many hard examxnatlons but there were partres and p1cn1cs also Stnce everyone reahzed that he was nearrng the end of hrs h1gh school career he has been tryrng to make thls last month count for somethlng both 1n hrs school work and hrs socxal dCl1V1ll6S Mlss Gordon began practlce on the muslc for our commencement exerc1ses The rnusl cal selectxons are Amer1ca Farewell Kfrom Martha l and ToaW1ld Rose Sunday morn1ng May 25 all of the Sentors attended ldlewlld Presbyterran Church for the Baccalaureate Sermon wh1ch Dr T K Young delrvered He urged us to conttnue to seek educatron The annual p1cn1c was a gala occaslon for all sen1ors as we gathered for our last soclal functlon of the year The ent1re Senlor Class lS lookrng for .vard to the n1ght of our graduatxon when Dr Al fred Loarmg Clark will address the Class And now w1th eyes frlled w1th tears and memones refreshed anew I gently close tn dlary and fondly lay rt back 4 I , .
