HISTCDRY By VIVIAN IETER The other day wh1le rummaglng through an old trunk 1 came across the drary I had kept durmg my hrgh school days at South Slde September 1937 Well we have at last started to h1gh school and do we appear and feel dec1dedly small rn thts great brg school' The shock of watchxng boys gomg through the belt hne and of seerng our fnends red laced and embarrassed s1tt1ng on top of therr lockers s1ng1ng solos was soon a thrng of the past Almost before we knew 1t we were rn the swlng of thlngs and were enterlng 1nto South Srde act1v1t1es w1th a wrll September 1938- The most drffrcult part of school the freshman year rs over and we re now sophomores Many new fnendshrps have been made and everyone rs eager to get started back after the summer vacat1on George Roberts has been made a 11fS1 heutenant rn the R O T C and Allen Goldsmnh appornted second lreutenant of the band March 1939- At the West Tennessee Latm Tournament at State Teachers College Ruth Bryant won second place 1n the Caesar d1v1s1on and Helen Overton and V1v1an Ieter won Honorable Ment1on rn the 11fS1 year d1v1s1on The three went to Nashvxlle to compete rn the State contest at Peabody College Apnl 1939 To Nashvrlle went the Glee Club They came back wrth honors the Grrls Glee Club rat 1ng superror the Boys good Those attendlng were Margaret Goodwtn lean McGona g1ll Catherlne Courtney Ruth Kmght Kathryn Totty Carolyn D1ttman Mar1or1e Lrvely Ag nes Goodwtn Betty Hamrlton Nancy Fowler Roy Adams and Iames Blackwell May 1939 The Glee Club under the dlrectlon of Mrss Anna B Gordon presented the operetta Hollywood Extra 1n the school aud1tor1um Nancy Fowler Roy Adams and Mar1or1el.1vely played leadlng roles Elrzabeth Thurmond chosen as a delegate of the South S1de Chapter of the Iunror Red Cross represented South Srde at the Natronal Red Cross Conventton at Washrngton D C September 1939- Myl Myl How tlme does flyl Here we are d1gn1f1ed Iunrors buzzrng around wrth a very knowlng axr At last we have galned that coveted balcony seat and we can look down upon the poor lrttle freshmen and sophomores s1tt1ng downstalrs Most of our class really have a part 1n the school dC11V1119S and have 1o1ned the dlfferent clubs and many are be comlng qulte outstandrng rn athletrcs We certarnly had a number of R O T C ofhcers and sponsors chosen from our class mem bers th1s year They are George Roberts Roy Adams Kenneth Srgman Mrlton Rottersman Blake Boyer Allen Goldsmlth V1rg1n1a Harper Marlorre l..1vely Mary Carlson Bonnre Thorne and Betty Hamrlton Four of our class Mllclred Beeman Bonnte Rrley Betty Hamrlton and Ruth Bryant have been chosen members of the Tnple S staff South S1deS Pep Squad shows great promrse of a good years work under such able cheer leaders as Bonnle Thorne Bobbte Yeager and Helen Karrls March 1940- Vtvxan leter won hrgh Honorable Mentton rn the Caesar drvtsron of the West Tennessee Lattn Tournament conducted at State Teachers College Apnl 1940- The Press Conference at Southwestern had a large representatlon from South Sxde Those who attended were Margaret Br1dges Ruth Bryant who was elected v1ce presrdent of the Conference Betty l-lam1lton Mtldred Beeman BOUD19 Rrley and Gordon Henson '32 1 1 I 1 1 1 . . . . .1 . - 11 1 ' 1 ' I 1 1 1 - 1 . . . ., 1 1 I T . . . , - 11 1 11 1 11 11 - - 1 1 - 1 ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 1 - I i 1 - 1 -1 11 . . . . . . - 1 1 1 , , . .
