NEWARK. NEW JERSEY The Recorder staff includes all sludents in Journalism class plus any other interested students. Meetings are held after school. The paper goes to press six times yearly and students do all writing, layouts, cartoons, photography, etc. Once a year The Recorder is entered in competition with several hundred other school newspapers in the Scholastic Press Association of N.J. The papers are rated in many areas. The Recorder received a second-place rating last year. The staff is split up into five committees as follows: Senior section, Sports section, Activities section. The General Organization tries to bring about a progressive change throughout the entire school. It operates as a medium between the students and the school administration. The G.O.’s main function is to attack the problems of the students, the condition of the school, and the problems of finances of clubs and activities. 23 LIBRARIANS: Mrs. Thomas Mrs. Little LIBRARY AIDE: Mrs. Clark These students provide South Siders with competent library services. They shelve and process books. They find many words which Caesar and Cicero used thousands of years ago on the pages of the New York Times. The members have tried to do things that would better and involve the school as a whole. Oceanoyraphy Club ADVISOR: Mr. Michnevich These students study marine life and wave motion and its effects by visiting marine research laboratories, studying texts, and visiting the ocean. ADVISOR: Mr. Alercio Members are trained to operate visual aid equipment-projectors, overhead projectors. opaque projectors, etc. A member will assist subject teachers in running the equipment. ADVISORS: Mrs. Murphy Mr. Means This committee was constructed by a group of concerned students, who were trying to combat the unwelcomed problems of the school. Let us look back at the pleasing years at South Side and keep in our minds the days of doing homework, going to detention, attending the junior and senior class dances, attending the basketball and football games, and also enjoying the presence of our friends. The day we have all been waiting for since the first class we attended at South Side is finally here. We are all happy, proud, and excited. Although we will be smiling and congratulating each other, there will be sadness deep down in our hearts. Our school years have provided the skills for the outside world. Some of us plan to go on for a higher education, some of us plan to enter into business, some of us plan to work, and some even plan to marry. Whatever we plan to do. if we look at the specific aim with feasibility and assurance, success will follow. A spirited blurk and gold Bulldog football squad opened their season with a victory over Vailshurg High. As always the South Side squad pulled off a string of upsets. The first upset was with Barringer High who was favorite to w in, hut quarterback Joe Epps and his first string horsemen shut-out Barringer. South Side without Andy Bryant, who was injured in the Hast Side contest, went to Plainfield for a win. This year South Side and Weequahir started a new series on Thanksgiving Day. The South Side squad, who finished second place with only one loss, on Thanksgiving Day stop| ed Weequahic from being undefeated in the city anil spoiled many dinners for the Weequahic fans. South Side placed second in the state in Croup 3 and was in the top five in defense in the state. The ’68 squad was the third best record that Coach D. has had since he became head coach. The major role of the band is playing at football games, school rallies, concerts, and assembly programs. The starting five—Foster, Latta, Davis, (.lark, and Smith—and the other team members won the Hillside Christmas I ournament. The Essex County Tournament showed South Side winning Livingston, Valley, Orange, and Vailsburg! Besides Essex County champions, S.S. set a record for the most victories (single games won). South Side finished with a record of 21-4 and won 21 of the last 22 games. For the State Tournament we beat all opponents and rom| ed over Lincoln in the final game by a score of 60-43. The Junior Varsity took the City Championship and indications are that they will rej eat for the Varsity Championship in I960. wimmina COACH: Mr. Capasso WWAWAW CO-CAPTAINS: Harry Branch Barry Gordon 1969 was a rebuilding year for South Side. After having a good year in 1968 many of the boys graduated leaving Coach Capasso with the job of starting a new young duh. It was a difficult start, hut after some practice sessions the hoys started to pick up the pace. Boys like Mar-cellus Green who fought hard in the 200 yard free style and many times finishing a close second, our 10 yard free style swimmers Henry Suher and Dallas Thomas who were just touched out on many occasions at the finish. In the other events co-captain Harr Branch saw much improvement and success in the breast-stroke events and co-captain Barry Gordon scored points in the 100 yard free style. Freshmen on the squad showing improvement arc Nathan Stone in the backstroke, William Smith and Russell Maye in the free style, and Mark Dicks in the distance events. With this nucleus Coach Capasso feels the team will have much success in the coming years. UP, UP and AWAY King Neptune is biting. 121 “Strike!! The member of the Thursday afternoon bowling team can be heard yelling this familiar word. Meeting every week at Centre I«ines, their season extends from October to March. Anyone with adequate funds is eligible to bowl. 122 55 en ciny earn The Fencing Team compiled an overall 6-2 win-loss record for the 1968-69 season. The varsity team took second place in the city fencing meet. Phil Jordan led the varsity with a perfect 6-0 record followed by Leonard Logan with a 4-2 record and Alton Franklin with a 3-3 record. Bob Juchcm at first base, and Larry Brown as a utility infielder. Returning underclassmen were Jose Hernandez as ace lefthander, Lee Hurt at second base, Lonnie Salter at third, and Tony Sumpter pushing for first. Ray Clark and Mike Gladney were shortstop and first base. Coaches Capasso and Murray believe that “the will to work is the will to win.” This year, besides trying to climb up higher in the city standings, the members of the squad were competing for a total of nine trophies.
