Now we were embarking on a great adventure—high school! On entering school we were quickly reduced to our true size in the first hour. Frankly, we couldn’t compare with juniors, who held the exalted position of being almost seniors. Sophomores weren't so great, but they weren’t as stupid as we freshmen—or so we were told by seniors. Our glorious career had begun. In short order we learned two things: (1) Don't ask a senior where a room is; and (2) Try to act as if you know where you’re going. Smart freshmen mastered the art of not looking hurt when a senior bnished at them and made a caustic remark about dumb freshmen. Really dumb freshmen who made a futile attempt to defend ther class were given a glance guaranteed to wither. Usually it did. The first year passed uneventfully. We had learned the room layout and were lieginning to look like normal people. As September passed into Deeemlier we acquired an important element—school spirit. It was this spirit which made us look forward to the opening of the new term—that and the fact that we were now sophomores. During this year we joined the clubs open to us. The fellows tried out for sports, while the girls plotted for boys—senior boys. All sophomore girls had hopes of attending the Prom. Needless to say. few made it. for senior boys soon wised up to the sudden surge of affection. The next SeptcmlxT we returned to school feeling wonderfully important, and we were. We were juniors and we had arrived socially. Gleefully we pushed freshmen aside, sniggered at their height ( We coukln't possibly have been that short! ), and laughed at the bewildered look in their eyes. It was this year we began to refer to ourselves formally as The Class of ’65. We held Junior Class elections and we elected Reginald Pcniston president. Kenny Broxton vice-president. Margarita Cruz recording secretary, and Gwen Slavs executive secretary. Some of us were lucky enough to be elevated to the executive committee. We planned events to raise money, and we gave our first dance—a smashing success. Anybody who was anybody was there, including seniors! We were a class now and we were proud of it. Everyone looked forward to Senior Day. the day wlx-n we would take otir senior seats. As juniors we dressed and marched into the auditorium. .As proud seniors we marclied out. Our day had come. During the summer many of us worked. Almost everyone decided, changed his mind, aid des-kled again on the choice of a career. Scouts had alieadv barked over most of our let-termen. who eagerly hoped for sports scholarships. In September we sauntered into school, because seniors don't lust walk like regular people. Every senior bought and wore nis senior pin. Few of us were absent from school on assembly day. Nobody wantrd to forfeit the privilege of marching into the auditorium. In short order we held our elections and named Kenneth Broxton president. Reginald Penicton vice-president. Dolores Sheeley. executive secretary. Jessica Bowman corresponding secretary, and Alex Sanchez treasurer. We were confident that this leadership would aid Mr. Shapiro, our adviser, in guiding us through a successful year. The class engaged in furiously competitive selling of candy, to help us with our dues. Alas, dues unfortunately came with the privilege of being seniors. Dues, pictures, rings, prom bids—all seemed to run together. Unbelievably soon we gave our first senior dance. “The Roaring Twentieth. A few of us never figured out if it was the twentieth dance or denoted the twentieth-century dance fads. Most of us had resolved that we would forgo party dresses or new suits for Christmas and ask Santa to vend us tin- cash needed for graduation. Girls began to snag fellows for the prom. Dr. Ziegler's yearbook staff, headed by Eloise Sutton, began to work diligently on the Optimist. It seemed as if it would never be completed, as deadline after deadline flew past. Tlx class decided that it wanted white and gold yearbooks, with a popularity poll in each homeroom. How we sat and smiled ami smiled and smiled, while the photographs snapped picture after imperfect picture. On March 5 came our last senior dance of tin- year. The Spnng Dance, which greatly added to our class funds. The guidance department finally published a list of Iww tlx seniors ranked in c lass. Many of us groaned as we learned that we weren’t rated as high as we felt wc should be. Most of us had already applied to our college, and many of us had been notified of our acceptances. As Senior Day and graduation loomed nearer. we felt proud, grown-up. ami scared: proud, because wc lud finished high school; grown-up, because we were considered adults now; and scared, because wc were embarking on a new path—jobs, college, marriage, adulthood. But as wc look banc we can all say that the Class of ’65“ left an honorable record in tlsc annals of South South High School. OUR LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT by Patricia Robinson. Dad: Sure. son. American history was my best subject. Come, sit down and let me tell you all about it. Well, to start with, America was discovered by Amcricus Vespucci in 1942, while on his way to India. They named America after a young girl named Christine Columbus. Son: But, Dad, I thought .. Dad: Hush. son. How do you expect me to tell the story if you butt in? Son: Yes, Dad. Dad: As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, the first tribe of Indians to come to America was the Mayflowers, and they landed at—now, what was the name of that rock? I know: it was named after a car— 1 believe it was Cadillac Rock. Son: I believe it was Plymouth Rock, Dad. Dad: Stop interrupting me. or I'll never get the story told! Son: I'm sorry, father. Please continue. Dad: A tribe of Pilgrims was put on reservations. It was here where the Pilgrims showed the Indians how to plant com and ... Son: Don’t you mean . . . Dad: 1 meant what I said and I said what I meant! Your father is right one-hundred per cent. Son: But my history teacher said that . . . Dad: Your history teacher! What does he know that I don't? Son: Nothing, Dad. Dad: As I was saying, the Indians tried to monopolize the corn market. This caused the Pilgrims to go on the war Kth and they started scalping the Indians with toma-wks, and before you knew it a civil war had started. Son: I thought the Civil War was between the North and the South. Dad: You are wrong, my boy. North America never went to war with South America. Son: I didn't mean . . . Dad: Never mind what you meant. I’ll try to continue, if you will stop interrupting. The most famous ride was the daylight ride of Paula Revere, who warned the Indians that the Pilgrim;: were coming. General Grant told the Indians not to fire until they saw the white of the Pilgrims' eyes. This famous battle took place on Punk's Hill. v Son: Punk’s Hill? Are you referring to Bunker Hill by any chance? Dad: Son, this is tin- ump-teenth time you have interrupted me. You must be more patient. I will answer all your questions when I am finished. Son: Thank you. Dad. 1 appreciate your help. Dad: But son. I'm not finished yet. Son: Thank you. Dad, but that’s all I need to know. Dad: Okay, son, but remember, if you ever need help in American history, always feel free to come to me. What if Willie Fisher ever made more than four points in a basketball game? I'll Ik an old woman with a lK ard. What if a woman ever became president of the United States? Chaos. WHAT SCHOOL ATHLETICS HAS TAUGHT ME by Bruce Bivins Athletics has played an important part in my high school career. I have played football and run track—both very pleasing to me—and have learned that an athlete is more than just the name of a person who participates in sports. An athlete is a person who is strictly dedicated to training. self-responsibility, and good sportsmanship. There is no guide or book that can make you an athlete, but there is a path all must follow. It is a path of winning and defeat. It's often said that a good hard-driving loss is I etter than an easy win. You must have your heart and soul in the game to get something out of it. I have seen athletes rise and fall, live and die, but none of them will tell you it was an easy trip. • Perhaps this is what adult life is like, too. THE ART OF FASHION AT SOUTH SIDE by Maxine l.ewis In today’s world, fashion is the newest craze. Americans young and old spend millions of dollars a year trying to clress nicely and keep up with one another. Even in South Side, students seem to think that they have to wear elaborate dresses, coats, suits, and sho s to school in order to pass the inspection of their classmates. The girls of South Side, for example, believe that they should go back a few years and wear the style of the 50's,” that is. long dresses and skirts. The girls really believe this, because they wear their skirts so long that thev come to about their hips. They think the newly fount! craze of fashion is drawing the outline of their eyes to make them appear larger. This, of course, is true, but do they have to draw them all the way to their ears? Eyebrows meet the hair line and, nowadays, the hair itself almost touches the ceiling. Some think that gym is a place to show off their clothes so they will frequently wear textured stockings and high heels to play kickball in. Others lH lieve that students should always take pride in their clothing, but by taking so much pride in their clothing they have none left for themselves. Indeed, if the girls of South Side didn’t have ouitc a few articles of clothing, they might be stout, but they aren't, because they would rather buy clothes than buy food. No wonder South Side has so many visitors yearly. They all come to see our girl students' version of the “South Side Fashion Show.” SOUTH SIDE'S FACULTY ALL-AMERICAN FOOTBALL Squad 18??
