THE SENIOR CLASSES OF 1953 PRESENT SOUTH SIDE HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK. NEW JERSEY JEWEL MOVEMENT.... A Diamond For Dependability It was an old Roman satirist who once wrote: “The noiseless foot of time steals swiftly by, And ere we dream of manhood, age is nigh.’ Time, that most inexorable of masters, brooks no turn-abouts--dots the eternal with an infinity o( “points of no return.’ Yet the human mind and spirit, unconquerable, flings shining bridges across deep chasms and, behold, the gleaming treasures of the past lie at our feet! Truly, we shall live it over again if we continue, throughout our lives, to be guided by the noblest in vision, courage and wisdom distilled out of the alchemy of countless ages of human experience. Here at South Side, you graduates have, for four fruitful years, lived “with the ages . May you continue, throughout life’s Journey, to live it over again” in terms of unceasing loyalty to the noblest human ideals--making, along the way, your own contributions to human progress. In the journey which lies ahead, 1 bespeak you all good fortune and happiness. FRED LANDOLPHI Principal JEWEL MOVEMENT.... A Sapphire For Accuracy The clock strikes midnight; the old day ends; the new day begins! What does the dawn of your new day, the commencement of your life in the adult world, hold in store? You are not timid and afraid. You are not reluctant to leave the familiar and secure halls of your Alma Mater. Upon careful consideration, you realize that actually you are eager to pass on to new challenges and achievements. For, youth is essentially adventuresome and courageous, anxious to play its part in the world and to make it a better place in which to live. Fortified with the knowledge that you have received good training and leadership here at South Side, you will be well prepared for new endeavors when Father Time starts the new day, your day upon the stage of time. My wish is that you play your part well, with happiness and success, a credit to yourself and to all of those who have in some measure contributed to your growth and development. JOSEPH CELIANO Vice-Principal • • Our Winding Stems. Mr. Morris Josephs GRADE ADVISORS We, the graduating class of January 1953, wish to express our thanks and appreciation to our class advisors, who have given so generously of their time and advice. They have been like the winding stem of a clock, regulating our activities and enabling us to continue with speed and accuracy in overcoming every obstacle, no matter how difficult. We shall try to the utmost of our ability to live up to the high standards set for us by our “Winding Stems . We shall always strive for success in every undertaking, just as we have in the past, with the willing and never-to-be-forgotten help of our grade advisors. 6 Mrs. Rose P. Simon Our Watch Crystals Mrs. Rose P. Simon Miss Rita L. Gill HOMEROOM TEACHERS Like the crystal of a watch, our homeroom teachers have watched us in a protective manner. Just as a crystal is made of the finest glass, they have been of the same fine quality. They have taken an interest in every one of us, securing a smoothly running future, by keeping obstacles out of the way. Throughout our four years, they have considered no problem too unimportant or too great to deal with. We all realize that without this protective covering, our course would not have been so unobstructed and enjoyable. 7 Many times in the course ol our lives, the entire outcome of our future seemed to be in the hands of our clock. These hands continue to turn, hastening the moments yet to come and casting those already enjoyed into our sea of memories. When we look back upon those moments, however, we realize that like the hands of a clook, oui class officers have played an impor- tant role in our lives. We wish to extend our thanks, appreciation and congratulations to the Hands of Our School Clock . They have constantly shown us the proper tihie to discus and act. Certainly, without them, our class would not have ticked with such regularity. We did have them, however, and we profited from their guidance. McCormick GRADE ADVISORS Our grade advisors, like the main springs of a clock, have kept us constantly working and advancing throughout our four years at South Side. Without their constant help, we could not have successfully completed our education at South Side. They have helped us with our problems whether they were big or small, academic or social. It has been mainly their faith in us that has encouraged us and kept us running smoothly. The June Class of 1953 sincerely wishes to thank our grade advisors, for all they have done to make our stay at South Side a memorable one. 36 Mrs. Ruth B. Ringel Our Time Keepers • • • HOMEROOM TEACHERS During these four years of high school the majority of us have discovered that time is very difficult to regulate and keep track of. Some of us have spent every minute in a worthwhile cause while others have let these valuable fragments of time slip through their fingers. Our homeroom teachers as Time Keepers, had the task of making us realize the importance of time. It was not an easy task, and it required their patient understanding and tactful persistence. We shall always remember your helpful guidance, which we know will enable us to discern the right path to a happy and successful life. Miss Katherine M. Colltson Miss Elena A. Haviar Miss Marie Waugh Mrs. Ruth B. Ringel 37 Our Alarm Clocks... a T D',lCl O- Our class officers have been to us like the alarm of a clock. Homeroom Period First Period Second Period Third Period Fourth Period Fifth Period Sixth Period Seventh Period Eighth Period OUR BELL SCHEDULE Never before, in the history of South Side, have we had such exciting as well as unique bell schedules. When the last teacher’s meeting scheduled for Wednesday was postponed until Thursday, the Friday bell schedule, which is usually used on Thursday, was used on Friday, thus leaving the Thursday bell schedule to be used on Monday, allowing for the teacher’s meeting which had taken place on Thursday. One might think that our bell system is quite complicated, but really, it isn’t. For instance: when a bell rings in South Side, it could mean enter class or leave class, go outside for fire-drill or stay inside for air-raid drill, you’re early for class or you’re late for classl When a South Sider hears a bell ring, he can interpret it to mean any one of these things; so how could he possibly end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. We, the graduating classes of 1953, were fortunate indeed to have had such flawless and smooth running bell schedules during our four years in South Side. 73 Arlene Rudowsky Katherine Motoviloff Optimist General Staff 1.
