THE OPTIMIST JUNE, NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FORTY-TWO AREN The past is dead, though did exist. The future lives for the optimist. Silly, that statement, but it's true. This is the same South Side auditorium and Гуе seen six or seven of these graduations—all alike—but this time it is different. This one is mine. Oh, Гуе known it was coming. After graduation, then what? What course are you going to choose for your life’s work? Here it is, the split second before the deadline, and I don't know. 1 have often thought of it and tried to figure it out, but—After all, there was—still a year, still five months, a week . . . two hours. Two hours till a diploma starts a race with the world! You know, it's like a river—this matter of education. Way back there, when I was five, my mother took me to a river boat—the first of three I was to board before tonight. There were a number of other kids my age, all new faces. Some of them were looking around quietly; some were crying and some were playing. A lady was trying to help each one separately. She might have called herself, “the Navigator of the Good Ship Kindergar- ten.” For a year we played together, with the teacher leading each enterprise, and then she put us on another boat. “The Grammar School River Liner.” There were a number of navigators on that ship and each taught me about the river as we moved up the current to the next stop. И: was a fairly broad river in that section, straight and calm. However, when we reached the little town of “Eighth Grade,” the pilot said something about a fork in the river— something about one course that would lead to college and another to business, and one to vocational school. She said I must choose which course I would take. It wasn't hard to choose. I took a transfer to the “High School”—C. P. Branch and sailed smoothly, learning more about the river and where it led. Once in a while the pilot spoke of a delta that was up ahead. 1 wondered about it, but waited to see it before I decided which course to take а 4--“КОВЕКТ ELKES.” What? Huh! Oh . . . . my diploma. “Er-a-thank you, sir. Yes, thank you.” Yes, here it is, the delta. Shall I travel the stream called Professions? or the brook called “College?” А new canal has been used by many lately. It's called “The Armed Service Canal.” How about that one, “Office Work?” or that one, “Technical Training?” or Music, or Art, or “Engineering,” “Mathematics,” “Secretarial Work, or—what? What? Гуе got to make up my mind. We're leaving the auditorium, leaving South Side, coming to—the delta. Music of the Strings Human Nature While at home, we wish to be At our house dow n by the sea.
