Andy and I were sitting on a bundle of old papers and leaning against the brick wall trying to feel the heat of the build ing. It was cold and all the news kids had on heavy sweaters and jackets. Their breaths were lines of thin white smoke blown away by the wind. Tell me, I said, what I should yell. You know what to yell. No, Í don't, Andy. This is the time Гуе sold papers in all my life. What do you mean? he yelled. I can't, I can't, and tears came into my eyes as I said it. I can’t make people sad. What are you talking about? They don’t want to hear what Herbert Hoover has to say; they don’t want to see how lousy the stock market is; they don't want to read how men are getting canned faster than you can count; they don't want to read about this depression and all the starvation. Well, what do you want them to do, listen to people sing, “O happy days are here again?” No, no, I screamed, the tears catching in my throat. And I saw Andy was crying too. I don’t know what I want, I don't know. Yell, then, he said with all his tears running into his mouth. We hafta earn some money, haven't we? But the papers will make people sad If they don't read it in the paper, Andy shouted, they'll hear it over their radios or someplace else. Yell, will you, before 1 kick you. Andy and I sold all our papers and all the time the people would look at us and we could see down deep within them the pain. We walked home together and when 1 walked into my house, my mother was standing over the coal stove cooking a panful of pork chops. I told her I had sold all the papers and she said that was fine When my father came home, my broth- er and sisters came into the kitchen. We all sat down to eat. We were having a big meal to celebrate payday and we all thought how good and warm the food was and ate mostly in silence that eve- ning. But all the time there kept running through my mind the music and words of the song everyone was singing in the movies,—the men in tails and the women wearing long orange dresses. Their heads were thrown back, their mouths opened in song and the blue of the sky was reflected in their laughing eyes. John Owen A DREAM A birch tree Casting its fingered shadow upon a sil- very lake, Is a beautiful w ay To view heaven. —Phyllis Friedman Page Seven JIM BARTLETT’S DAUGHTER Hollyville was aflutter, including its foremost citizen, Jim Bartlett. He had good reason to be jubilant, for his daugh- ter was comin g home at last. Jim had done nothing but talk about his daughter for the last three years What a success she had made in New York! She had met all the important people. Why, she even had a suite with a telephone in each room. Hollyville had accepted the bragging of Jim with little or no excitement. Jım had to spend his time bragging about something, and it might better be about a beautiful, successful daughter, than a hundred-pound fish. Of course no one ever thought of questioning his daugh- ters existence, but they subtracted fifty per cent from the story and then believed half of the result! But now Hollyville was aflutter. Jim’s daughter had almost become a tradition with the town. The townspeople all would gather at the old man’s house to hear his daughter's latest escapade (No о е ever suspected the old doting father of slight- ly misconstruing the facts.) That evening Jim had greeted them with this informa- tion. His daughter would arrive on the morning train. Every one was there to meet the train. The comments were varied. Many didn't want the girl to appear. They were afraid the truth would break the old man's heart. After all, she couldn't be that beau- tiful or successful! The last time he had seen her was at the age of seven. Fifteen years had passed since then. Some old- timers could remember that far back and agreed that she was a beautiful child. No doubt the old man still bore the picture of the beautiful sev en-year-old in his mind. Others were anxious and curious to see this angel on two feet. Page Ten Jim's daughter, Peggy, took the town by storm. Jim fainted when he saw her. Everyone in town gathered in circles and whispered. It was unbelievable. How could Jim have such a beautiful daughter? Jim Bartlett was in heaven. He had his real live daughter to show off, and not just letters. She was very dutiful and loving, and seemed to enjoy her stay thoroughly. But it was a short visit, and Jim found that soon he had to part with his daughter. Jim was happy, and contented. He wanted no more from life reached New York once more, she entered a building, After Jim's daughters in front of which a sign bore these words “Minsky's Bubble Girls Madison.” Featuring Dolly Dolly was hailed by the girls, “It must have been pretty boring for you, Dolly, out there on the farm with the cows and chickens. How do you like that Dolly Madison, the best strip-tease on the stage, playing nursemaid! How is your old man, Dolly?” “Lay off, Сога,” replied Dolly, the old man was swell to me.” “You're not getting soft, are you?” “Of course not. Let's not talk about it.” “What made you do it, Dolly?” “You remember the kid that used to room with me about two years ago, don't you?” Sure. Well, she used to tell me about her father and her home town,—how much she missed them. She hadn't been home for thirteen years, not since her ma had left home.
