Listen. Try to follow them. Down the halls And up the stairways, In quiet corners And noisy spaces - Voices in the air. Do you hear them too? Sometimes they blend As if to whisper, Sometimes they echo out loud. Other times they seem silent But never still, Sounding different every day. They are elusive, Leading into lockers Cr locked into drawers. They hide in closets And stick under desks. They appear to slip into silence, To disappear Only to come creeping out again Erom somewhere in the crowd. They ring after the bells Before them Beside them. They rise in private conversation Above the public address And during it. They ride atop confusion And push along in its midst. They settle upon shoulders That brush along too quickly To catch them. But sometimes you can hear them Every tone Every light Every whisper. Try to follow them - They generate A new kind of electricity A crackling voice Amid the silence. Listen . . . 1 1 1 r 1 1
