TREASURER: Debbie Cohen and Lisa Friedel ADVISOR: Mr. F. Gerardi The Senior Class officers, with a few inter- ested students and a very hard-working advi- sor, and despite an extremely apathetic class, attempted to raise money through cake sales and other activities. The student-faculty bas- ketball game was successful both financially as well as socially. The goal for the year was the seniors' alternative to the usual end-of-the-year bash - a Smorgasbord held at a Beach Club - one last attempt at class unity. SOCCER 13,88 CO-CAPTAINS: Steve Wulfing and Steve Goodman COACH: Mr. A. Raynor I.V. COACH: Mr. G. Murdock The 1971 soccer season ended in bitter disap- pointment for a team that had the talent and ability to win championships. The squad had dominated its league most of the season, and was looking forward to a playoff berth as well as the division crown, but dropped three of its last four decisions and finished with an 8-4 rec- ord, in third place. In its last match, the team failed to put together a victory that would have meant the first place trophy and a chance for more: the dreams of many that had worked long and hard, vanished. Many players demonstrat- ed fine ball-playing during the season, and not few of the seniors look forward to playing in college. Among them were Steve Goodman and Steve Wulfing, goalie Bob Steinberg, and half- backs Dan Bernstein and Mark jaskowiak. Full- back Tom Satterley was named to the all-divi- sion team. SOPHOMORE CLASS p. 125 PRESIDENT: john Pucci VICE-PRESIDENT: Glen Beer SECRETARY: Ilene Kaufman TREASURER: Barbara Best ADVISOR: Mr. W. Denton This year the Sophomore Class focused its attention on different projects. One change was the ordering and receiving of class rings so that they could be worn for three years instead of two. Also undertaken were the selling of pretz- els and a spring car wash, both of which suc- cessfully added to the sophomore class' treasury. SPANISH CLUB p. 82 PRESIDENT: Shelley Rosenstock VICE-PRESIDENT: Betsy Lyons SECRETARY: Deborah Cantor TREASURER: Pat Quinlan ADVISOR: Mr. I. Fonseca This year, the Spanish Club has centered all its meetings and fund raising activities on just one goal: a trip to Spain. Forty-two members went, not as tourists, but as travellers. They lived in pensions and met the Spanish people. In addition to visiting places of historic and ar- tistic interest, the travellers spent 3 days in Se- ville during Holy Week. SPORTSMAN P- 69 CO-EDITORS-IN-CHIEF: Diane Berman and janet Maughan ASSOCIATE EDITORS: Rise Greenberg and Mike Roth ADVISOR: Mr. E. Hillman The Sportsman, the official newspaper of South Side, was published ten times this year and recorded the various activities of the stu- dent body. Articles concerned with community and political matters were also printed along with reviews of plays, movies and books. SPRING TRACK p.118 COACHES: Mr. Dowden and Mr. Kerrigan South Side's 1972 track and field team dis- played some excellent potential and had high hopes for a successful season. Many seniors, who had already won two varsity letters, re- turned to the team anxious to work hard for a winning team and some new records. Strong contributors included milers jim McCullough and Steve Figueroa, hurdlers Steve Morgan and Larry Karst, and triple jumper Tom Satterley. Pole vaulter Steve Wulfing provided many needed points, as did quarter-miler Bob Hollen- berg, and john Zoilo, whose main event was the 220 yard dash. STAGE CREW p. 61 OFFICERS: Richard Oberhofer and Paul Charkzuk ADVISOR: Mr. L. Waxman The Stage Crew built the sets and kept the stage in order for the plays and musical produc- tion given this year. Lighting and other extras were also taken care of by the members and with the help of its treasury the club made cer- tain stage repairs. Behind every dramatic pro- duction and its rehearsals the Stage Crew was an integral part of the scene. STUDENT-FACULTY SENATE p. SO CHAIRMAN: Glenn Barnes ADVISOR: Mr. P. Hardy Again this year, the Student-Faculty Senate suffered from lack of interest and concern, not only on the part of the student body in general, but also on the part of the Senate members, who gained little in the way of effectively dealing with student problems. Out of the meetings held between members, the Board of Education, and the local Administration, emerged such is- sues as the possibility of establishing a Curricu- lum Review Board, a procedure for teacher eval- uation, and student representation on the Board of Education. Also discussed were the proposals for the abolition of substitute teachers and the establishment of student lounge facilities. However, no concrete action resulted, and the future of the body was in doubt. SWIM CLUB P-114 COACH: Mr. Hopkins The Swim Club, one of South Side's newer additions, held its practices at Adelphi Univer- sity. The team, composed of both girls and boys, planned several meets. The team met twice a week to practice its skills. TENNIS P- 93 CAPTAIN: Allan Sverdlik COACH: Mr. W. Mendoza This year's Cyclone Tennis Team experi- enced a disappointing season, although they did manage to compile a 6-6 won-lost record: the competition in Division III had improved great- ly over the last few seasons. South Side, howev- . .. .-we .:auf:.1muss.1w:.r- ff ..:i.::'::mr r..f:'. i er, had many fine players on its team, including Captain Allan Sverdlik, a junior, Edmund Fran- co, a sophomore, and senior jimmy Fuller. U.N. CLUB p. 82 PRESIDENT: Iaimee Kurfirst ADVISOR: Mr. S. Galioto This year's U.N. Club met early in the year and one other time to have its yearbook photo taken. Due to lack of interest the club was in a semi-suspended state throughout the other months. In past years, this was an active group, meeting often to hear speakers and to discuss important issues. Those involved hope that next year the club will be revived. VARSITY CLUB p. 112 ADVISORS: Mr, R. Caproni and Mr. A. Raynor Varsity Club is open to all members of a var- sity sport. Among its activities during the year were the sale of candy at football games and ushering between halves at the basketball games. VOLLEYBALL p. 94 ADVISOR: Mrs. P. Piner IV. ADVISOR: Miss Mathias This year the Volleyball Team almost made it through the championships. After winning in their division, both teams went into the play- offs only to lose to Mepham in the final match. This season's leading players were Jackie Ray- nor, Suzanne Iolicoeur, and Debbie Rich. WINTER TRACK p. 117 COACHES: Mr. Dowden and Mr. L. Dreyfuss This year, for the first time, the Winter Track team recruited girls to keep and record times and act as managers. The team under its two new coaches, recorded a 7-5 won-lost mark in open, non-league competition, going against some of the best teams in the county. High hur- dler Larry Karst, relay and middle distance men Steve Morgan, Tom Satterley, and Bob Hollen- berg, and all-purpose Mike Lombardo were among the team's high scorers. Long-distance runners Steve Figueroa and jim McCullough also scored well for the Cyclones. WRESTLING p. 114 CO-CAPTAINS: Michael Ramos and Thomas Boatwright COACH: Mr. W. Piner The 1971-72 Wrestling Team, although con- stantly hampered in dual meet competition by forfeited weight classes, produced some fine individual performances, all by underclassmen. The most successful grappler on the squad was junior captain Mike Ramos, who finished with a 10-2 dual meet record, with seven victories by early pins. He won third place in the Division championship for the 135 lb. weight class. Oth- er Cyclone standouts included juniors Tom Boatwright and Steve Sagon, and sophomores Brad Wilson, Don Popper, and Chris Ramos. Coach Piner hopes that with returning letter- men and new talent the team will be a real con- tender for the league championship next year. 163
