At this final ceremony, diplomas will be received, tears will be shed, and pictures will be snapped. What will these photo- graphs show? ln all probability, the camera will catch the joy, the sorrow, and the fulfillment that the occasion warrants. But the eye of the camera probes deeper than the superficial expressions that are mirrored on each face, for it tells the story of a student's three years at South Side. The look of self- confidence, recorded on film, is the end-result of the responsibility that each senior has incurred, for he has gained self-assurance from the tasks he has capably performed in school. The look of vitality, caught by the camera, is evidence of the -fact that three years in South Side have added much spirit to each student's personality. These characteristics, which the camera shows on each senior's face, have aided him in South Side, and will form the basis for his success in the future. table of contents glimpses of I959-I960 administration and faculty seniors activities sports . . underclassmen ....... 1 L' A 3! 3i1.'qfE! Their excellent salesmanship tumed the first senior proiect, the magazine sale, into a finan- cial success. Selling subscriptions for popular maga- zines, seniors eamed money toward their class dues while engaging in good-natured rivalry. Seniors also performed in a talent assembly which rivaled the fin- est professional variety show. Senior hats appeared on the street, in the public library, and at athletic events where spirited seniors were heard cheering the loudest. Climaxing the years in high school, the Big Prom was the background against which seniors gathered for one last dance. Through every proi- ect, the senior class officers aided the class of 1960 in becoming efficient workers and conscientious leaders, and instilled the feeling that the photo- graphs of the senior year are by far the most mem- arable. 0 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS, L T0 R., ROW I: N. Holt, vice pnsidonti D. Phillips, uoretaryg ROW 2: R. Hamie, oo-treasurerp R. Maurer, presidentg R. Fastov, co-treasurer. Q South Side's senior class officers formed a fluid team that handled executive duties with ease and eliiciency. The collection of the senior dues and the selection of the senior gift to the school were some of the ma- ior roles of the officers. They were also responsible for the selection of the hat committee and the planning and execution of the Senior Prom. flhe officers also were instrumental in forming the new senior party commit- tee. Because of the excellence with which these leaders fulfilled their duties, the senior class enioyed a happy and eventful year. Jane Sonnenschein Jane Sonnenschein's mastery of her academic work with a 95.13 average has not prevented her from taking an active role in school activities. She is copy editor ol the Colonnade and secretary of the Red Cross Club. Jane also serves as vice president of the National Honor Society and was president ol the Latin l Club. Her ability for leadership and organization has developed her into one at South Side's tinest citizens, worthy ot the respect that is accorded her by classmates and teachers alike. Josephine Engel Josephine Engel's 94.79 average makes her the saluta- torian of the class of l96O. Her vibrant personality is high- lighted by her desire to participate in school activities. She is an active member in school sports, the orchestra and Gamma Hi-Y. She has been a contributing member of the GO. by serving as a homeroom treasurer and GO. representative. Meeting before, during, and after school, the various clubs are constantly humming with activity, as a basketball player goes in for a layup, a Senior Choraleer exercises her vo- cal chords, a G.O. otlicer types the minutes and a SPORTSMAN staff member corrects an article. The great variety of is wide enough in scope so that no student lacks an opportunity to display his abilities. Participation in extra-curricular functions en- couraged as an aid to a well-rounded personality in- creases the student's awareness of others and his ability to cooperate with his fellow workers. Paul Greenberg, president Doris Kearns, vice president fi Judy Lehman, secretary exhibiting student leadership As the coordinator tor all school functions and activities, the General Organization ably performed the duties at South Side-'s student govern- ment. One heard a constant hum ot ac'ivi'y in the G.O. oftice, as pur- chase orders were typed, checks were mailed, and tigures were balanced. All school matters originated here, as the GO, ott7ciers worked together to enable South Side to function ethciently. One ot the tasks ot the executive council, the ohicers who comprise the governing body ot the GO,, was the choosing of committees, while the GO. representatives had the power to alter these committees. To bring the workings ot the General Organization closer to the student body, meetings were held regularly, in this way the G.O. obtained new ideas and was better able to function more to the benefit of the school. ln the General Organizae tion rest the democratic principles and etticient leadership necessary for a fine student government. Bowling, coached by Miss Jean Blume and Mrs. Sara Jellenick, is a comparatively new sport at South Side. Team members met weekly throughout the winter months to develop body balance. Continuous alter school practices resulted in higher scores for all team members. Volleyball, an old and popular sport, was played two afternoons a week. Under the supervision of Mrs. Dorothy Casey, everyone was given a chance to participate, An honor team was chosen to take part in intra- mural games. By participating in team sports such as bowling and volleyball, the girls improved their individual skill and gained valuable experience in team cooperation and sportsman- ship. Guided bytheiroliicersandthetraditionsofSouthSide, the underclassmen have shown that they ae well on their way toward establishing their mark. For the sophomores, the year has been one of discovery, for newooursesandnewsituationshavebeenpresented to them. The iuniors, on the other hand, have con- tinued the precedents which they set a yea' ago, and have prepared themselves for the role of upperclass- men next year. Bravely bearing the titles of little sophomore and large junior, the underclassmen showed evidence of a sense of fun, along with the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and integrity which are so necessary for the role they will event- ually play.
