After compiling nine consecutive victories, including a 3-Q defeat ot Uniondale, the net- men lost their tenth match to that school for their only setback, Sparking the Cyclone squad was tirst singles player, Lance Levine, who emerged triumphant in ll at l2 matches. Singles players Phil Friedman, Dave Polishook, and Jett Fromberg consistently scored crucial victories for the Cycs. With a record of 5-4. Coach lvlorse's harriers emerged from the lirst winning season since the intro- duction of cross-country three years ago. Highlighting the x-men's year was Bob Cormaclds third place linish in the Nassau County Championship, in which the South Side squad placed eighth. Since many ol the Cy's top runners were underclass- men, next year's team promises to be exceptionally strong. Seniors Ed Davis, Rod Boggs, and Gary Arnold, and underclassmen Bob Dotzler and Jett Hegerman com- peted tor the Cyclones. Despite a dearth of experienced players, Coach Mackel was able to mold a formidable team around his single returnee, John Punger. Employing the fast break and all court press to advantage, the Cyclone Eve posted an outstanding 11-5 mark while deadlocking for third position in Section II of the South Shore Athletic League. Unfortunately, a February playoff drive, which saw the Red and Blue win six consecutive encounters, was abruptly terminated by a 71-56 defeat to league champion Hempstead in the season's final contest. Averaging well over 20 points per game, Punger emerged as one of Nassau County's outstanding basketball stars.
